Mooligaimangalam (Moolimangalam) is a small urban area located in Karur district[1] in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the 3rd and 4th wards of Tamil Nadu Kagitha Alai Town Panchayat.
Demographics
Mooligaimangalam consists of roughly 400 homes and a population of 2,000 people.[2]
Geography
Moolimangalam is 11 km northwest of Karur and just south of the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers complex at TNPL Pugalur.[3] The adjacent villages include Sottaiyur, Kurukkapalayam, Sokkankadu, Pandipalayam, Masagoundanpudur, Pazhamapuram, Thadampalayam and Ponniagoundanpudur. It has an average elevation of 125 meters above sea level. (413 feet).[4]
Communication
The telecommunication providers of the area are BSNL, Aircel, Airtel, Reliance, Jio and Vodafone & Idea. BSNL provides landline connections. Internet connectivity is fair (mostly dial-up connections).
Transport
Mooligaimangalam has a very good transportation system made up of private minibusses and government-run buses. Most people commute by bicycle or motorcycles.
The nearby town Pugalur (Code:PGR) has a railway station which connects to Erode, Coimbatore, Trichy, Chennai and Cochin. Passenger trains and express trains pass through the station.
The nearest airport is in Trichy (87 km). Their major Airport is located at Coimbatore (115 km).
Entertainment
There are no theatres or cinemas in or around Moolimangalam. Pugalur Annai [புகழூர் அன்னை] and Velayuthampalayam Caveri [வேலாயுதம்பாளையம் காவேரி]' previously [when?] had cinemas/theaters but these are no longer in operation. Today, one must travel to 'Karur' or 'Paramathi Velur' to see a movie at a theatre. Most town residents have access to all the television channels.
Cricket is the sport of choice among Moolimangalam children.
Mooligaimangalam to Moolimangalam
The name Mooligaimangalam is derived from the rare 'Mooligai' plant found in the village. Eventually, it was changed to Moolimangalam.
Industries
Agriculture is the main industry in Moolimangalam. Many citizens work at TNPL. The agribusiness made tremendous improvements after the TEWLIS project allowed for effluent water to be pumped from TNPL into the village by pipelines. TNPL gets water from Thirukkattuthurai Village Panchayat located in the Cauvery river bank. The sugarcane and paddy are the primary crops grown, but coconut trees have increased in popularity.
Moreover, textile is also a viable industry.
After their studies, Moolimangalam people work in Karur, nearby cities, or abroad.
Education
Moolimangalam has one primary Panchayat school and is taught in the Tamil language. The literacy rate is around 30-40%. In recent days, because of increased awareness around the importance of literacy, children attend TNPL Matriculation & Higher secondary school, Pugalur Public School, Pugalur Boys, and Girls High School.
M. Kumarasamy College of Engineering (MKCE), Thalavapalayam, 639 113, is a landmark on the National Highway No.7, located on the Karur – Salem route and is the major engineering college near the town. The college is located 5 kilometers away from Moolimangalam and is affiliated to the Anna University, Chennai. It is approved by the All India Council of Technical Education, New Delhi.[5]
This town has produced lawyers, doctors, and many engineering graduates who are working in different multinational companies.
Facilities
Moolimangalam has Pillaiyar temple (which was reconstructed in 2009), Sellandiamman Temple, Maruthaiveeran Temple (Dalits), and Unnamed Temple for Naidus. The village boasts one public library, two public wells, and many water taps maintained by the TNPL Panchayat.

ADMK and DMKare the primary political parties.
Festivals
An ultimate festival is the Mariamman festival, according to locals. The temple is located in Nanaparappu which is 4 kilometers away from the town. People do celebrate Pongal, Deepavali (conducting function adal padal by youngsters). During Pongal, village youngsters conduct a sports program for three days and distribute prizes at the end of the program.
The most famous festival of the village is Sellandiamman festival, which is celebrated during the Tamil month of 'Panguni'. During this festival, the villagers invite all of their relatives to the function. The festival lasts for 3 days; on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The staged drama (Natakam in Tamil) and Adal Padal enacted by the village youth is the most popular entertainment show in the entire TNPL panchayat. People from neighboring villages come to see this drama and Adal Padal.
New clonal research center
The Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) has commissioned a state-of-the-art clonal propagation centre with a capacity to produce 10 crore(136,000 USD)( clonal plants a year. The centre at Moolimangalam in the district is said to be the largest clonal production, research and development centre in a single location in India.[6]
