Project Learning Tree Canada (PLT Canada), a national non-profit organization based in Ottawa, aims to help youth learn about the environment and find employment in the forest and conservation sector. It was launched in 2018 after the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)[1] took over the environmental education organization Project Learning Tree (PLT)[2] in 2017.[3]
PLT Canada started as a wage matching program to help youth find green jobs in Canada. In 2018, the Government of Canada announced that PLT Canada would receive funding to place 638 students in provincial and territorial parks and 1,150 students in other green jobs.[4] PLT Canada obtained additional funding from the Government of Canada in 2019 to help 500 additional youth gain work experience in the forest and conservation sectors.[5] In 2020, PLT Canada again received funding from the Government of Canada to place 1,200 more youth into green jobs.[6][7]
In 2019, PLT Canada's Green Jobs Manager rode a wooden bicycle across Canada to promote opportunities in the forest and conservation sector. The “Green Ride for Green Jobs” began in Victoria.[8] It took place over 9,000 km and included stops in Williams Lake,[9] Prince George,[10] Edmonton,[11] St. Albert,[12] Thunder Bay,[13] Timmins,[14] Sudbury,[15] North Bay,[16] and Ottawa.[17]
