A buffer in geographic information system (GIS) is a zone around a geographic feature containing locations that are within a specified distance of the feature.[1] A buffer is likely the most commonly used tool within the proximity analysis class of spatial analysis methods.[2]

A buffer is an area defined by the bounding region determined by a set of points at a specified maximum distance from all nodes along segments of an object.
