The OpenStreetMap Foundation is a non-profit foundation whose aim is to support and enable the development of freely-reusable geospatial data. It is closely connected with the OpenStreetMap project, although its constitution does not prevent it supporting other projects. It was registered in England and Wales on 22 August 2006 as a company limited by guarantee.[2]
Structure
Membership
OSMF is a membership organisation, with all but corporate members entitled to vote at a general meeting on foundation activities. Full members may run for election to the board of directors. OSMF members do not determine how OpenStreetMap itself operates, just how the foundation supports the OpenStreetMap movement. Membership is open to all who pay the membership fee of £15 per year and who meet certain participation criteria. Individuals who have mapped more than 42 days out of the last 365 or who have contributed equivalent effort to support the project are eligible for waiver of the membership fee as "active contributors" and may join the foundation free of charge. At the Annual General Meeting in December 2020, the foundation membership voted to allow "active contributors" to be full, and not merely associate, members of the foundation.[3][4][5]
Since September 2013, the foundation accepts corporate memberships in an "associate member" (non-voting) category. Founding corporate members are Geofabrik, Geotab, Naver, NextGIS and Mapbox.[6][7]
As of December 2018[update], the foundation had 972 Normal members, 515 Associate members and 28 Corporate members.[8] As of December 2020 the foundation counted 1,913 members in total.[9]
Board
The foundation is run by a board of seven members, including the foundation's officers: chairman, secretary and treasurer.[10]
As of December 2020[update], the board is:[11][12]
- Allan Mustard (Chairperson)
- Rory McCann (Secretary)
- Guillaume Rischard (Treasurer)
- Tobias Knerr
- Jean-Marc Liotier
- Mikel Maron
- Eugene Alvin Villar
Working Groups
Working Groups are small groups of people that work on specific tasks to support OSM.[13] Their members may have special access to functions that normal users do not. For example, the Data Working Group members can redact edits and block users.[14]
The groups are:
- Licensing

- StateoftheMap Organizing Committee
- Plans and executes annual SOTM conference
- Membership
