Generic Networking Virtualization Encapsulation (Geneve) is an encapsulation network protocol created by the IETF in order to unify the efforts made by other initiatives like VXLAN and NVGRE,[1] with the intent to eliminate the wild growth of encapsulation protocols.[1][2]

Open vSwitch is an example of a software-based virtual network switch that supports Geneve overlay networks.
