Nuria Oliver is a computer scientist. She is Scientific Director at Telefónica. She holds a Ph.D. from the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is the most cited female computer scientist in Spain, with her research having been been cited by more than 7500 publications[1]. She is well known for her work in Human/Computer interaction[2] and big data for social good[3][4].
Biography
Nuria graduated with a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid in 1994.[5] She was awarded the Spanish First National Prize of Telecommunication Engineers in 1994.[6]
In 1995 she received a La Caixa fellowship[7] to study at MIT, where she received her doctorate at the Media Lab in the area perceptual intelligence. In 2001, she joined Microsoft Research.[8]
In 2004 she was named one of the top 100 innovators under 35 (TR100) by MIT Technology Review, based on her work in human-computer interfaces.[9][10]
After twelve years in the US, she left Microsoft in 2008 to join Telefonica in Barcelona as Director of Multimedia Research. [11][12]
She was named a Rising Talent by the Women's Forum for the Economy and Society in 2009.[13][14]
In 2009, she was selected a one of the "100 future leaders who will design Spain in the next decades" by El Capital Magazine.[15]
She was profiled as one of nine female Spanish leaders in technology in 2012 by the Spanish newspaper El País. [5][16]
In 2013 she received the Senior Member Award by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).[17]
