An example of an e-girl's aesthetic

The e-girl and e-boy (meaning "electronic girl/boy") is a youth subculture that emerged in the late 2010s and is almost exclusively seen on online social media, in particular on the video sharing application TikTok.[1][2] The look is inspired by skater culture, 1990swanna be hood member, black/mexican, hip hop, goth,[3] and rave.[4]

Their alternative fashion choices commonly consist of baggy, thrifted clothes, hair coloured in shades of green or pink,[1][5] unkempt nail polish,[6] and decorative chains.[3] E-girls wear mesh shirts and winged eyeliner,[1] while e-boys wear black clothes layered over long sleeve striped shirts[7] and floppy middle-parted hair.[6][3] Both boys and girls may wear heavy makeup, in particular pink blush on the cheeks and nose, imitating anime or lolita girls.[4][8] Fake freckles are common.[4] Small shapes are often drawn under the eyes, usually heart shapes.[9][4] YouTuber Jenna Marbles made a video imitating an e-girl's makeup style, calling it a mix between "Harajuku, emo, and Igari makeup", the latter of which is known as a hangover makeup style in Japan.[5]

Videos by e-girls and e-boys tend to be flirty and at times, overtly sexualized.[1][7] Eye-rolls and protruding tongues (a facial expression known as ahegao, imitating climaxing) are common.[8]

Labelling someone an e-girl or e-boy implies that they spend too much time crafting their online persona.[1] E-girl and e-boy were at the top of Google's most searched for outfit ideas of 2019.[7]
