Nintendo Research and Development 2 (R&D2) was a team within Nintendo that developed software and peripherals. R&D2 did not develop any software titles for the first decade at Nintendo.
Originally led by Masayuki Kamimura, who previously worked for Sharp Electronics Corporation using an idea of Sharp's solar technology Kamimura's department went on to develop the popular Nintendo beam gun games, selling over 1 million units. Masayuki Kamimura is often referred to, as Masayuki Uemura for some reason since his brief mention in the book Game Over.
Kazuhiko Taniguchi took Kamimura's position in 2004. Nintendo R&D2 was later merged into Nintendo's EAD.
