Die Veranstaltung '''King of the Ring''' war ein [[PPV|Pay-Per-View]] der World Wrestling Federation (WWF).


'''''WWE King of the Ring''''' ist ein Turnier und eine Großveranstaltung der [[WWE]]. Erstmals fand der King of the Ring im Jahre 1985 statt. Von 1993 bis 2002 fand die Veranstaltung in [[Pay Per View|Pay-per-View]]-Form statt.
Bei diesem PPV drehte sich alles anfangs nur um eine Sache. Die Krönung eines Königs, aber es kam auch zu anderen Matches. Die erste King of the Ring Veranstaltung fand am 13.06.1993 in [[Dayton]], [[Ohio]] statt. Eines der Matches war ein WWF Championchip Match. Hier setzte sich [[Yokozuna]] gegen [[Hulk Hogan]] durch und konnte abermals WWF Champion werden. Der Gewinner des Abends aber war ein ander, denn im Finale des großen Turnieres konnte sich der Hall of Famer [[Bret Hart]] gegen [[Bam Bam Bigelow]] durchsetzen und wurde somit zum König unter den Wrestlern gekrönt. Im darauf folgendem Jahr gewann erneut ein "Hart". Diesmal war es Bret's Bruder [[Owen Hart]]. 1996 siegte ein Mann dem die folgende Zeit gehörte. "Stone Cold" [[Steve Austin]].Zu dieser Zeit nahm die Bedeutung des Turniers beim King of the Ring immer mehr ab. Am Anfang kam es neben dem Turnier zu ein paar vereinzelten Matches, doch mit der Zeit kamen immer mehr Turnierfremde Matches dazu und das Turnier rückte mehr und mehr in den Hintergrund. 1998 kam es dann zu einem der denkwürdigsten Matches der WWE. Es war das Hell in a Cell Match zwischen dem Undertaker und Mankind, bei dem [[Mankind]] gleich zweimal vom Käfig runter fiel. Hier gewann letztlich der Undertaker. Des weiteren gewann [[Ken Shamrock]] das Turnierfinale. Außerdem setzte sich [[Kane]] im Main Event gegen Steve Austin durch und wurde somit WWF Champion. Diese Regentschaft endete am nächsten Tag aber auch schon wieder. Anschließend erlangte das Turnier wieder mehr Bedeutung, obwohl 1999 der Main Event nicht zum Turnier gehörte, sondern ein Match um die volle Kontrolle über die WWF war. Hier gewannen [[Vince McMahon]] und Shane McMahon. 2000 wurde dann der Olympiasieger im Ringen [[Kurt Angle]] zum König gekrönt. Bei der letzten King of the Ring Veranstaltung wurde der Neuling [[Brock Lesnar]] zum König gekrönt.


== Regeln ==
In der ersten Runde treten meist 32 Athleten in Einzelkämpfen gegeneinander an. Ähnlich wie bei einer Fußballmeisterschaft geht es über Achtel-, Viertel- und Halbfinale ins Endfinale. Der Sieger des KotR wird bei einer Zeremonie mit Zepter und Krone belohnt. Die KotR-Veranstaltung ist die größte und bedeutendste Großveranstaltung neben [[WrestleMania]] und den [[Survivor Series]], wurde allerdings nach der Umstrukurierung in die [[World Wrestling Entertainment|WWE]] nicht weitergeführt.

== Geschichte ==
2006 führte Smack Down! GM Long die King of the Ring Serie fort.
Das Turnier King of the Ring hatte seine Ursprünge am 8. Juli 1985. Turniere waren zu jener Zeit im Wrestling sehr beliebt und so war dieser erste „King of the Ring“ eher ein Gimmick für eine [[Houseshow]] um die Ticketverkäufe in die Höhe zu treiben. Der erste King of the Ring hatte dementsprechend auch keine Auswirkung auf die damaligen Fernsehshows. Das Turnier fand in [[Foxborough]], [[Massachusetts]] statt. Im Finale traten [[Don Muraco]] gegen [[Sylvester Ritter|Junkyard Dog]] an. Muraco, der das Turnier gewann, bekam zwar eine Krone aufgesetzt, doch in späteren Storylines wurde sein Sieg nicht thematisiert und er trug die Krone auch nicht bei anderen Veranstaltungen. Das Turnier wurde 1986 noch einmal neu aufgelegt und von [[Harley Race]] gewonnen. Diesmal übernahm der Gewinner das Gimmick und trat ein Jahr lang als „König“ auf. Der King of the Ring wurde 1993 die Nummer fünf neben den „Großen Vier“ PPVs ([[Summer Slam]], [[Survivor Series]], [[Royal Rumble]] und [[WrestleMania]]). Letztmals wurde es 2002 als PPV gesendet. Als solches war es Teil umfangreicher Storylines. So markierte es 1994 eine Etappe im „Bruderkrieg“ zwischen [[Owen Hart]] und [[Bret Hart]]. Ein Jahr später war es der Heelturn von [[Nelson Frazier|Mabel]]. == Ergebnisse ==


Nach einer vierjährigen Pause fand das Turnier exklusiv bei ''[[WWE Friday Night SmackDown!|SmackDown!]]'' statt, allerdings nicht als Großveranstaltung, sondern in den wöchentlichen Shows, beginnend am 14. April 2006 <sup>(Ausstrahlungsdatum)</sup>. Im April 2008 gab es erneut solch ein Turnier, diesmal jedoch mit nur 8 Teilnehmern und in einer [[WWE Raw|Raw]]-Ausgabe. 2009 wurde King of the Ring nicht ausgetragen. Am 22. und 29. November 2010 wurde das Turnier erneut bei RAW ausgetragen. Das nächste Turnier fand im April 2015 statt, wobei die Vorrundenmatches bei RAW, die Halbfinals und das Finale jedoch nur auf dem WWE Network übertragen wurden. In der Rückkehr zur Turnierphase ist insbesondere der Sieg von [[Booker T]] 2006 hervorzuheben, der den Sieg in sein Gimmick als King Booker übernahm. Auch [[Wade Barrett]]s Sieg 2015 brachte dem Wrestler einen Karriereschub.<ref name=":0" />

WWE King of the Ring ist ein Turnier und eine Großveranstaltung der WWE. Erstmals fand der King of the Ring im Jahre 1985 statt. Von 1993 bis 2002 fand die Veranstaltung in Pay-per-View-Form statt.

Regeln

In der ersten Runde treten meist 32 Athleten in Einzelkämpfen gegeneinander an. Im K.-o.-System geht es über Achtel-, Viertel- und Halbfinale ins Finale. Durch besondere Situationen (Doppel-Disqualifikation, Verletzungen, Doppel-Count-Out) kann es zu Freilosen innerhalb des Turniers kommen. Der Sieger des Turniers wird bei einer Zeremonie mit Zepter und Krone belohnt.

Als andere Variante gibt es auch den Hardcore-King of the Ring. Dabei gibt es vom Prinzip her keine Regeln, d. h. sämtliche Utensilien können nach Belieben eingesetzt werden. Auch bei Eingriffen anderer Wrestler von außerhalb gibt es keine Disqualifikation.

Geschichte

Das Turnier King of the Ring hatte seine Ursprünge am 8. Juli 1985. Turniere waren zu jener Zeit im Wrestling sehr beliebt und so war dieser erste „King of the Ring“ eher ein Gimmick für eine Houseshow um die Ticketverkäufe in die Höhe zu treiben. Der erste King of the Ring hatte dementsprechend auch keine Auswirkung auf die damaligen Fernsehshows. Das Turnier fand in Foxborough, Massachusetts statt. Im Finale traten Don Muraco gegen Junkyard Dog an. Muraco, der das Turnier gewann, bekam zwar eine Krone aufgesetzt, doch in späteren Storylines wurde sein Sieg nicht thematisiert und er trug die Krone auch nicht bei anderen Veranstaltungen. Das Turnier wurde 1986 noch einmal neu aufgelegt und von Harley Race gewonnen. Diesmal übernahm der Gewinner das Gimmick und trat ein Jahr lang als „König“ auf. Es folgten drei weitere King-of-the-Ring-Turniere, die nicht im Fernsehen ausgestrahlt wurden.[1]

Der King of the Ring wurde 1993 die Nummer fünf neben den „Großen Vier“ PPVs (Summer Slam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble und WrestleMania). Letztmals wurde es 2002 als PPV gesendet. Als solches war es Teil umfangreicher Storylines. So markierte es 1994 eine Etappe im „Bruderkrieg“ zwischen Owen Hart und Bret Hart. Ein Jahr später war es der Heelturn von Mabel. Für Stone Cold Steve Austin markierte der Sieg über Jake Roberts ebenfalls einen großen Erfolg, wurde dort doch der Grundstein für die Catchphrase „Austin 3:16“ gelegt.[2]

Bret Hart ist der einzige Wrestler der das Turnier zweimal gewann, davon einmal die Turniervariante und einmal die PPV-Variante.

Nach einer vierjährigen Pause fand das Turnier exklusiv bei SmackDown! statt, allerdings nicht als Großveranstaltung, sondern in den wöchentlichen Shows, beginnend am 14. April 2006 (Ausstrahlungsdatum). Im April 2008 gab es erneut solch ein Turnier, diesmal jedoch mit nur 8 Teilnehmern und in einer Raw-Ausgabe. 2009 wurde King of the Ring nicht ausgetragen. Am 22. und 29. November 2010 wurde das Turnier erneut bei RAW ausgetragen. Das nächste Turnier fand im April 2015 statt, wobei die Vorrundenmatches bei RAW, die Halbfinals und das Finale jedoch nur auf dem WWE Network übertragen wurden. In der Rückkehr zur Turnierphase ist insbesondere der Sieg von Booker T 2006 hervorzuheben, der den Sieg in sein Gimmick als King Booker übernahm. Auch Wade Barretts Sieg 2015 brachte dem Wrestler einen Karriereschub.[1]

2019 war das Turnier Teil der Sendungen Raw und Smackdown[1] und wurde von Baron Corbin gewonnen.[3]
