I call WSL2 on windows an "environment", because it is not really actually Linux in a comparable way to z/OS Unix being Unix, because WSL (and WSL2) both rely heavily on clever use of virtualization techniques, for instance through implementing something called a "pico process", which is entirely incompatible with and parallel to a normal windows process. The first way to interpret 'subsystem' is that z/OS Unix is implemented as a separate and somewhat self contained environment that is in some way "off to the side" of MVS. This is not accurate, since z/OS Unix was implemented directly in the MVS kernel, has a full and complete set of Native system calls, and is not virtualized at all in any way or at any point.
