'''HMS ''Nomad''''' was an {{sclass2|Admiralty M|destroyer}} built for the [[Royal Navy]] during the First World War. She was sunk during the [[Battle of Jutland]] in 1916.

==Description==
The Admiralty M class were improved and faster versions of the preceding {{sclass|Laforey|destroyer|||1913}}.<ref name=g5>Gardiner & Gray, p. 76</ref> They [[Displacement (ship)|displaced]] {{convert|971|LT|t|0}}. The ships had an [[length overall|overall length]] of {{convert|273|ft|4|in|m|1}}, a [[beam (nautical)|beam]] of {{convert|26|ft|8|in|m|1}} and a [[draft (hull)|draught]] of {{convert|9|ft|8|in|m|1}}. They were powered by three [[Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Company|Parsons]] direct-drive [[steam turbine]]s, each driving one [[propeller shaft]], using steam provided by four [[Yarrow boiler]]s. The turbines developed a total of {{convert|25000|shp|lk=in}} and gave a maximum speed of {{convert|34|kn|lk=in}}. The ships carried a maximum of {{convert|237|LT|t}} of [[fuel oil]] that gave them a range of {{convert|2100|nmi|lk=in}} at {{convert|15|kn}}. The ships' complement was 76 officers and [[naval rating|ratings]].<ref name=f8>Friedman, p. 298</ref>

The ships were armed with three single [[QF 4 inch naval gun Mk IV, XII, XXII|QF {{convert|4|in|mm|adj=on|0}} Mark IV guns]] and two [[QF 2-pounder naval gun#QF 1.C2.BD pounder|QF 1.5-pounder (37&nbsp;mm)]] [[anti-aircraft gun]]s. These latter guns were later replaced by a pair of [[QF 2 pounder naval gun|QF 2-pounder (40&nbsp;mm)]] "pom-pom" anti-aircraft guns. The ships were also fitted with two above water twin mounts for [[British 21-inch torpedo|{{convert|21|in|adj=on|0}} torpedoes]].<ref name=f8/>

==Construction and service==
''Nomad'' was ordered under the Third War Programme in November 1914 and built by [[Alexander Stephen and Sons]] at their [[shipyard]] in [[Linthouse]]. ''Nomad'' was part of the 13th Destroyer Flotilla at the [[Battle of Jutland]] on 31 May 1916.<ref name="jell p469"/><ref name="Camp p25">Campbell, p. 25.</ref> At 16:09 hr, Admiral [[John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe|Jellicoe]] commander of the Grand Fleet ordered the 13th Flotilla to launch a torpedo attack against German [[battlecruiser]]s, while at almost the same time, Admiral [[Franz von Hipper|Hipper]], commander of the German battlecruisers, ordered a torpedo attack on British battlecruisers by the German 9th Flotilla.<ref name="Camp p46,0">Campbell, pp. 46, 50.</ref> The two destroyer forces became involved in an intense engagement, during which ''Nomad'' was disabled by a shell hit in her engine room. Two torpedoes fired by the German destroyers at ''Nestor'' failed to strike, passing under the British destroyer.<ref name="Camp p50-1">Campbell, pp. 50–51.</ref><ref name="Kemp p16-7">Kemp, pp. 16–17.</ref> Later that afternoon, ''Nomad'', together with sister ship {{HMS|Nestor|1915|2}}, also immobilised in the earlier attack, was engaged by German battleships. ''Nomad'' launched all her torpedoes at the German ships, but failed to score a hit, while the German battleships {{SMS|Friedrich der Grosse|1911|2}}, {{SMS|Prinzregent Luitpold||2}}, {{SMS|Kaiser|1911|2}} and {{SMS|Kaiserin||2}} fired at ''Nomad'' with their secondary armament. The wreck is designated as a protected place under the [[Protection of Military Remains Act 1986]]. The wreck of ''Nomad'' was found by accident in 2001 by a dive team including marine archaeologist [[Innes McCartney]]. The ship's bell can be seen on display at the Jutland shipwreck museum.
