Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Poland
![]() | Points of interest related to Poland on Wikipedia: Outline – History – Portal – Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Cleanup – Stubs – Assessment – To-do |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Poland. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Poland|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Poland. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Europe.

[edit]- Adam Nowicki (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
- (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL)
A few hits came up, but I was only able to find material which mentions Nowicki in passing and not SIGCOV. Seems to be confused with a potential child sexual abuser in BBC hits, so I disambiguated with Marathon in searches. I doubt based on his age that we would find significant offline sources that are not online. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 21:08, 16 July 2025 (UTC)

- Keep – Per pl.wiki article. Needs to be expanded with the original. Svartner (talk) 22:43, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- Keep per sourcing on the Polish article. – Ike Lek (talk) 01:57, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Comment - @Ike Lek and Svartner: - The sourcing on the PL Wiki article is dubious. The references are:
- 1) Przegląd Sportowy's Skarb Kibica, which is basically just the Olympics guide published before the games happened, but no page number or article-title is given - the suspicion is that this is just a generic reference.
- 2) Nowicki's profile on the Polish Olympic comittee's website, but that's neither SIGCOV nor independent.
- 3)-8), 10) pzla.pl, which is the website of the Polish athletics association, which is not independent.
- 9) Asics.pl - this is a one-sentence mention of Nowicki EDIT: and ASICs is the footwear brand that sponsored Nowicki.
- 11) & 12) Polish armed forces website - not independent as Nowicki was a soldier, but also not SIGCOV
- The only one of these that is a "possible" is "Skarb Kibica", but that's because I've not been able to find an accessible copy of it. However the description of it here says it has a bio for each athlete, no saying whether it's SIGCOV or not though. FOARP (talk) 18:26, 17 July 2025 (UTC)
- Delete. He came in 99th out of 115 competitors, so he's run of the mill of the run.Bearian (talk) 15:16, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- Delete - Basically per above. No clear evidence of SIGCOV. Even if the Skarb Kibica reference is SIGCOV (and this isn't clear) to have a WP:GNG pass there needs to be multiple pieces of SIGCOV, not just one. FOARP (talk) 16:30, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- Keep, plenty of coverage: 1 (200 words), 2 (200 words) 3 (250 words) 4 (400 words) 5 and many others (though many brief or interview-y) with a search of "Adam Nowicki maraton" – he's the second-fastest Polish marathoner all-time and has plenty of coverage that comes along with it. Easily notable. BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:31, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- 1) Pure race-report, no SIGCOV of Nowicki,
- 2) Basically reporting on what Nowicki posted on Facebook, not independent.
- 3) Not a WP:NEWSORG pass because no editorial team or policy.
- 4) Basically an interview with Nowicki ("Adam Nowicki admits.... Nowicki knew...") just doesn't use quotation marks for the quotes and/or paraphrasing what he says. FOARP (talk) 17:42, 18 July 2025 (UTC)

- Redirect to Poland at the 1988 Summer Olympics#Rowing – As WP:ATD. Svartner (talk) 16:49, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Keep, per the SIGCOV in the museum just like for the other Polish rower you nominated. It includes details such as that she was known as "a piece of Polish rowing history" and "for many years a solid driving force for many important teams." She was a 17-time national championship medalist and received the title Master of Sport. Just like Elwira Lorenz, she has many books (some of the same ones) that devoted pages of coverage to her. She's clearly notable just like Lorenz: @Svartner: BeanieFan11 (talk) 19:20, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- I feel compelled to quote @JoelleJay on the Elwira Lorenz discussion:
the museum is run by the governing sports body (Academic Sports Association, AZS), so is explicitly not independent.
Same thing here. 17-time national championship and the museum is certainly grounds for draftification, but not for sole usage of the museum as a reliable source. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 13:06, 15 July 2025 (UTC)- The notability comes from all the books that are known to have covered her per the museum. See WP:NEXIST. BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:20, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- Can you find such sources? If sufficient sources that could be cited are locatable, then they should be able to be added. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 20:55, 15 July 2025 (UTC)

- (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL)
Only three results appear on Google. No SIGCOV. Per @Schwede66, discussion is likely where we should redirect this to. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 21:17, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Sportspeople, Women, Olympics, and Poland. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 21:17, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Comment Note "wioślarka" is Polish for "rower", for those searching. Jankowska was one of 12 athletes presented with honours from the Polish Olympic Committee in 2015 for her contributions promoting sport in Poland. [1] [2] Coverage very likely with more than this (literal first page of Google results) search. Kingsif (talk) 23:03, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Keep Double world university champion (1986), and Polish champion (1987) before her Olympics appearance (mini-bio). There also appears to be a whole report coverage of her on page 30 of this 1998 newspaper (pdf opens in browser), which I've not been able to type out and translate completely yet, but mentions that besides being a PE teacher she organised the only sports school in a certain region of Poland and personally recruited kids (I think I found the website for the school which said she joined in 1994?). Kingsif (talk) 23:25, 10 July 2025 (UTC) Passing mention as early as 1984 in local news, might be a good newspaper archive to sift through.
- Concerned about the independence of the first source so I would say try to find another more independent one (especially if it looks like it's endorsed by the , but the second one does seem promising. A google translate of that article displays this:
On the sidelines of this year's rowing recruitment. Elżbieta Jankowska, M.A., put a lot of heart and work into organizing the sports class at the only Sports Championship School in our city and region. She visited many primary schools in the voivodeship and in Płock, where rowing is the oldest sport and the cradle of sports in general in the city on the Vistula River. It is a discipline that has produced 10 Olympians (out of 12 in the history of Płock sports), including 5 Olympic medalists. The only woman practicing sports in our city who has had the honor of representing our city and Poland in the Olympic Games is Elżbieta Jankowska. Unfortunately, she was not allowed to meet with the youth at Primary School No. 17. World Junior Championship medalists Jerzy Bednarski, Krzysztof Michalski, and many other Polish rowing representatives once studied at this school. It would be unwise to not let an Olympian and rowing coach into the school.
- Interesting. It's a strong start, but my primary concern isn't necessarily the amount of coverage but rather the amount of tabloid nature that the paper seems to write in praise of Jankowska. More of an opinion piece. It's significant coverage, but not SIGCOV, if you know what I mean. Regardless of my scrutiny on the sources, this is a very strong start regardless, though. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 12:47, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Here are some sources that can be possibly used:
Commemorative medals of the 100th anniversary of the Polish Association of Rowing Societies were awarded by Bogusław Kołodziejak , secretary of the historical commission of the Polish Rowing Association, to Olympians Elżbieta Jankowska and Piotr Buchalski.
PZTW - 2023- Zespół Szkół Technicznych in Płock is the school, which she joined 1994
In 1994, Elżbieta Jankowska and Jacek Karolak (a graduate of the first year of SMS) joined the coaching staff...
zstplock.pl
In 1978, the club returned to its traditional name, Płock Rowing Association, while retaining the "Budowlani" suffix to honor its construction sponsors. ... In 1985, this class was transformed into the Sports Championship School, which operates to this day. Until the 1980s, PTW Płock achieved success almost exclusively in the men's category. The first women's gold medal at the Polish Senior Championships was won in the four-man event in 1987, and a year later Elżbieta Jankowska became the first Olympian in PTW history.

- Delete. Can't even be merged because this is explicitly a sub-list of List of German names for places in Poland, which has sub-lists for all the other provinces except for one which was literally PROD'd 9 hours ago. At best, the full list could be arranged to be separated based on province, but there should not be separate sub-lists for the different provinces. Weirdguyz (talk) 08:35, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
- Merge or delete. It seems that there might be a stronger argument that German language placenames are more notable in some parts of Poland than others due to the history. I think I see this in some references, but I don't have the knowledge to assess them. Even then, I suspect a rearrange/merge in context at List of German names for places in Poland makes more sense than repeating the same information over several other lists. - Did you check any Polish newspaper archives? The Małgorzata Rosiak AFD already confirms that there is coverage not available on the internet for top Polish sportspeople. Meanwhile, here, the Polish Wikipedia article describes her as holding the national championship in the "coxless pair, double sculls, coxless quadruple sculls, coxed quadruple sculls and double quadruple sculls" every year from 1979 to 1990. That is an insane number of national championships and indicates it is virtually certain coverage exists. We just need to look... BeanieFan11 (talk) 15:35, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

"The Małgorzata Rosiak AFD already confirms that there is coverage not available on the internet for top Polish sportspeople"
- No, what it "confirms" is that sportspeople in highly niche sports (as snowboarding was in the 90's) aren't necessarily notable. FOARP (talk) 15:12, 9 July 2025 (UTC)- Given that she's notable, no, it does not "confirm" anything of the sort. BeanieFan11 (talk) 15:27, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
- You think the assurance by the article subject that she "has SIGCOV" is proof of notability?... JoelleJay (talk) 04:49, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- "has SIGCOV" is not what she said. She said multiple newspapers wrote in-depth stories focusing on her. That's a pretty strong indication that she ... had in-depth stories written about her (i.e. SIGCOV). BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:43, 11 July 2025 (UTC)

- Keep. @InvadingInvader, Svartner, and FOARP: It'd be nice if people actually looked. This museum gave an in-depth biography of her with its very own bibliography section – that includes a page of coverage to her in Głuszek, Leksykon 1999, five pages in Kobendza, 80 lat PZTW, a page in Miniatury czyli filigranowe portrety wielkich dam polskiego sportu ("Portraits of the Grand Ladies of Polish Sport"), a page in Pawlak, Olimpijczycy, and two pages in AWF Warszawa w Igrzyskach Olimpijskich 1952-2000. That's a clear indication of SIGCOV. BeanieFan11 (talk) 15:16, 9 July 2025 (UTC)

- I am personally unsure about the museum quite frankly, with regard to its independence and amount of significant coverage. And based on the number of athletes the museum provides, part of me also wants to say that it's borderline passing mention. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 21:09, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
- 300 words is not a "passing mention". And aside from that: do you have any reason to believe that the book sources the museum says cover her do not cover her? BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:45, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
- The Academic Sports Association writing mini-biographies of its own athletes is definitely not an independent source. The amount of content in the cited sources, and their independence, is unclear. JoelleJay (talk) 05:00, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
