what's up with putting sales numbers in the "release" section? MrGuyWasTaken (talk) 22:43, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For me sales should be part of release since it's not really tied to how the game is received. I mean, it sold a million copies before reviews even dropped. I've grouped sales with release in all of the FAs I've written and never faced pushback JOEBRO64 00:08, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Thank you today for Donkey Kong Country, introduced as one of those rare (ba-dum-chiss) video games where it's impossible to overstate its influence. It transformed Donkey Kong from a dusty, archaic product of the olden days into a multimillion-dollar franchising juggernaut, turned the tide of the 16-bit console wars by giving players a taste of 3D graphics well before they could actually play next-generation hardware, and elevated Rare from a tiny, unknown studio into one of the video game industry's premier developers. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:01, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

[edit]

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Promotion of Donkey Kong

[edit]
Congratulations, TheJoebro64! The article you nominated, Donkey Kong, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Gog the Mild (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:06, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Retro Engine for deletion

[edit]
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Retro Engine is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Retro Engine until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.

IgelRM (talk) 23:51, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, congrats on the FAC for DK. I've been a bit inspired by your layout for the article, especially running critical commentary inline in the history, rather than lumping stuff together and trying to badly summarize things at the end when the sources don't really exist. The Halo franchise article needed a thorough cleanup anyhow, so I've been reworking it to align a bit more with how DK does it. Right now it's very much in the middle of the mess, slash and burn phase, but in the next couple of weeks, could I ping you to the talk to give feedback? Z1720 already brought up some of the issues on the talk page, and it'd be good to have a second pair of eyes on if the improvements work well enough for keeping it at GA, or if a reassessment would still be useful at that point. WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! WikiCup 2025 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.

Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:

In addition, we would like to recognize Generalissima (submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.

The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Thank you today for Donkey Kong Land, introduced (in 2023): "This 1995 Game Boy game attempted to bring the groundbreaking pre-rendered graphics of Donkey Kong Country to vastly inferior hardware. Rare was well known for pushing the hardware they were working with to its limits, and Donkey Kong Land is no exception. It's hardly a classic nowadays, despite being one of the bestselling Game Boy games (and the bestselling handheld Donkey Kong game)—the visuals are a muddy mess, making it incredibly difficult to play, and subsequent handheld ports of Donkey Kong Country rendered it obsolete within just a few years. Still, it's hard not to appreciate the craftsmanship and novelty of Donkey Kong Land's ambitions."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:03, 26 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Donkey Kong country edits

[edit]

Edit here. The manual of the first Country game, clearly states the banana hoard is specifically just Donkey Kong's collection of bananas, rather than something belonging to the entire Kong family. The Donkey Kong Country 2 manual further confirms that the hoard is DK's and not possessed by all of the Kongs.

So I think we should go back to my plot summary. Delsait (talk) 04:34, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Gran Turismo (1997 video game)

[edit]

Hey there, big fan of your work, especially since I am a mediocre editor and I admire those who improve and elevate articles.

While far from the most exciting and action-packed set of games, Gran Turismo is Sony's best selling franchise thanks in no small part to the first game's success, which, due to its revolutionary depth and visuals for a racing game, essentially single-handedly established the modern sim racing genre.

The game's article, however, leaves a lot to be desired, and my attempts to expand it were reverted, so I ask for your assistance in improving it, if you don't mind. Much regards! Bill L. Hal (talk) 21:59, 5 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Donkey Kong Bananza

[edit]

Hello JOEBRO64, how are you?

I noticed you removed all my recent changes, including some quotes, from the Donkey Kong Bananza article. Could I kindly ask the reason for that?

I'm not planning to edit that article again. I'm just curious to understand your perspective.

Also, as a Donkey Kong fan, can I ask a quick question? Are Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. the same character? Carloseow (talk) 22:30, 10 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The sources already support the cited statements so quotes are unnecessary. The summary in the plot was already a concise and accurate summary of the game, and the other changes were unnecessary and poorly worded. JOEBRO64 01:15, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. "the player seeks to collect the Banandium Gems, golden banana-shaped diamonds, while exploring" can be interpreted in two ways: 1) That Banandium Gems and golden banana-shaped diamonds are two separate types of collectibles. 2) That Banandium Gems are golden banana-shaped diamonds. The source said "you'll be able to unearth golden bananas for DK. These are called Banandium gems after they've been broken". What about use: "As the gorilla Donkey Kong, the player explores sandbox-like levels in an underground world, unearthing golden bananas that become Banandium Gems after being broken."? 2.) Sonic and the Secret Rings isn't on there. Sold 1.2 million according to this source - https://www.engadget.com/2008-03-21-wiis-third-party-million-sellers-revealed.html

3.) Team Sonic Racing is missing. Sold 3.5 million according to this source - https://www.gematsu.com/2025/06/sega-mistakenly-reveals-sales-numbers-for-like-a-dragon-infinite-wealth-persona-3-reload-shin-megami-tensei-v-and-more

4.) Sonic Riders isn't on there. Per its own Wikipedia page, "Sonic Riders was a commercial success; upon release, the GameCube version was the second best-selling game for the system, remaining among the top 10 until June 2006. Throughout 2006, the game sold 930,000 copies, with an additional 560,000 units in North America by the end of March 2007." <- that definitely puts it over 1 million

5.) Likewise a similar situation for Sonic Advance 2. It's page says "Sonic Advance 2 received "generally favorable reviews", according to review aggregator Metacritic. The game was also commercially successful, selling approximately 176,541 copies in Japan, 740,000 copies in the United States, and 100,000 copies in the United Kingdom, for a total of 1.016 million copies."

6.) The 2008 CESA Games White Paper also has some SKUs:

Sonic Adventure DX - 1.6 million (GC) Sonic Rush - 1.6 million (DS) Sonic Heroes - 2.9 million (PS2) Sonic Heroes - 1.42 million (GC)

SOURCE: https://www.installbaseforum.com/threads/2008-cesa-games-white-paper.289/

7.) Sonic Colours Wii + DS sold 4 million. It comes from a Famitsu interview: https://nintendoeverything.com/sonic-colors-ultimate-devs-on-the-games-return-and-tails-save-feature-series-30th-anniversary-more/ SonicKamran (talk) 22:27, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SonicKamran, I can make these changes once I get the chance. Will likely be sometime tomorrow. I will note that I can't add CESA numbers unless I have access to the papers themselves to verify. JOEBRO64 14:55, 19 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:PeacemakerWhosWho.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:PeacemakerWhosWho.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.  REAL 💬   15:36, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:DreamOfTheEndless.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:DreamOfTheEndless.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.  REAL 💬   15:37, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Asking for your GA nomination on Sonic Superstars

[edit]

Hello, I did some cleanup for Sonic Superstars, but I can't nominate the GA as I've only done cleanup and archiving, but I welcome you for the option to nominate the article for status. RTSthestardust (talk) 18:03, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm planning to get to it eventually. The reception section still needs a fair amount of work. JOEBRO64 18:04, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
