Salisu Usman Ogbo (born 25 October 1972) is a Nigerian academic, political economist, and educational administrator known for his transformational leadership at Nigeria’s tertiary education institutions. He is the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, since April 2020, where he has led sweeping reforms in curriculum accreditation, campus infrastructure, governance, security, and student welfare. His administration is credited with stamping out entrenched cultism, corruption, and malpractice, while promoting transparency, innovation, and meritocracy.

Early life and education

Ogbo was born in Angwa‑Ogebe, Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria. He attended Roman Catholic Mission Primary School, Ankpa (First School Leaving Certificate, 1988), before secondary schooling at St Charles College and Young Muslim Congress Secondary School (WAEC, 1995).[1]

He earned an IJMB Advanced Level certificate at Kogi State Polytechnic (1996), then a B.Sc. in Political Science from Bayero University Kano (2001), an M.Sc. from University of Ilorin (2006), and a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Development Studies from Nasarawa State University, Keffi (2015).[2]

Academic and administrative career

Ogbo began public service in 2003 at the University of Ilorin, where he served as Administrative Assistant, Acting Secretary, Faculty Officer, and secretary to over 22 committees.[3] In 2009, he joined Prince Abubakar Audu University (formerly Kogi State University), Anyigba, where he rose to Senior Lecturer, Head of Department (2016–2020), and chaired key academic and administrative committees.[4]

Appointment as Rector

On 7 April 2020, Ogbo was appointed Acting Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic by Governor Yahaya Bello. He was confirmed as the substantive Rector in February 2021, and his tenure was renewed in July 2024 by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.[5]

According to official reports, Ogbo’s administration successfully prevented 107 security threats in four years. He established an anti-cultism committee, installed CCTV surveillance, fenced campus perimeters, and expelled confirmed cult members to foster a safe and conducive academic environment.[6]

Academic quality

All 57 existing programs received full NBTE accreditation, and 19 new ones were introduced during Ogbo’s tenure.[7]

Infrastructure & ICT

The Polytechnic experienced massive infrastructural development, including new lecture halls, science laboratories, male and female hostels, a polytechnic clinic, a JAMB CBT center, solar lighting, improved internet connectivity, internal road construction, water supply facilities, and increased ICT penetration.[8]

Governance, finance & welfare

Ogbo automated financial transactions and tuition payments, promoted transparency, processed over 1,000 staff promotions, and secured ₦816 million in TETFund support for the institution.[9]

Research & innovation

Under his tenure, staff research grants were introduced and student entrepreneurship was strengthened. In 2024, he launched the Usman Ogbo Sickle Cell Foundation in honor of his late son, Samsudeen, to raise awareness and promote access to care.[10]

Ogbo is married with children and holds the traditional title of “Omaoja” in the Igala kingdom.[15]
