Origin
[edit]The acronym GISAID was first mentioned in a correspondence letter published in the journal Nature in 2006,[1] which put forward an initial aspiration of creating a new global consortium for sharing avian flu data.[2] Members of the consortium would release data in publicly available databases up to 6 months after analysis and validation.[3]
Although no essential ground rules for sharing data had been established,[4] the correspondence letter was signed by over 70 leading scientists including seven Nobel laureates because access to the latest genetic data for highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza zoonotic infections was often restricted, in part due to the hesitancy of World Health Organization member states to share their virus genomes and put ownership rights at risk.[5]
It would take another 18 months until an international consensus among governments and researchers on the specific rules of the GISAID data-sharing mechanism could be forged and GISAID could be launched officially in Geneva on the occasion of the 61st World Health Assembly in May 2008.[3] Rather than the initial vision of a consortium requiring membership, the actual GISAID database enabled sharing of data without delay in a publicly accessible and free database.[3]

...Supari is less than specific. She says she doesn't necessarily need an agreement in "black and white" recognizing Indonesia's ownership rights, yet goes on to argue that Jakarta should have final say on any vaccines made from its viruses.
