Biased Article
[edit]Yes, there are problems with latinx. But this isn't specific to it. Latine, latin@, Hispanic, latino (and many more) all have their own problems. I think the article should better reflect that.
"...only 2–3% using Latinx" and "most people don't prefer it" are misleading statements. Of course most people with Latino/Hispanic/etc. backgrounds will prefer latino/latina to refer to themselves. Non-binary people are a minority. The data is presented in a intentionally misleading way.
Also, the majority of the hate the term "Latinx" has received is because of conservative memes and talking points. It's being used as a way to say "Progressive people don't care about other cultures, they try to change it to fit their agenda".
The article should still focus on the issues and backlash of this term. But the current version is biased and misleading. I think everyone can agree on that. It should be reworded to better explain why the term is controversial. Also, the online conservative arguments which sparked most of the criticism should be emphasized. Thank you! 92.44.220.104 (talk) 13:57, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- I'm a Latino; I can assure you, we do not like nor use the term Latinx. I believe our opinion, based of course on reliable sources as per Wikipedia policies, should matter far more, considering it is a term that directly involves the Latin community. Also, you just contradicted yourself by saying "I think everyone can agree on that", because you are trying to speak on behalf of a lot of people who do not share your political/cultural background. Kind regards. 177.232.90.86 (talk) 03:22, 26 March 2025 (UTC)

Edits to article's structure
[edit]Hello everyone! As part of a Wiki Education assignment, I decided to alter the article's structure since it had been flagged with a concern over list formatting. The biggest change to the article is the removal of the "Public awareness and use" section, as the information listed under it contained a variety topics including polls, surveys, news articles, studies, politics, academia, and so on. I have relocated most of the claims under their respective categories and have deleted some that appear elsewhere in the article. In its place I have added a section labeled "Among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos," since many of the polls and surveys had to do with the direct consensus of the country. I have also included information from the most recent Pew Research survey to keep the information up to date. I encourage you all to look through my edits and comment on any errors you believe I made so or changes you would like to see. Thank you so much! DeweyDee509 (talk) 23:26, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

- (The contribs link isn't working, here a fixed link: [1])
- I have reverted these edits, as they did not cite any independent reliable sources for the claim that
The term has also been used in contemporary memoir [sic] to affirm trans and gender-nonconforming Latin American identities
and that this particular bookexemplifies
(i.e. is representative of) its usage in particular communities, leaving serious doubts on whether this particular use in a particular memoir should indeed considered relevant for this article, or whether the importance of this book for this article topic is rather the editor's personal opinion. (Use-mention distinction might also be worth a look.) - For what it's worth: The article about the book's author doesn't contain this claim either, in fact it doesn't even mention the term "Latinx" at all - nor do any of the reviews and other sources cited there in the section about the book (except a single interview with the author, where she uses it only a single time and doesn't discuss the term per se).

It became a slur

I have seen many people online, mainly english-spearks, who intentionally use this term to offend hispanic people, at this point this "attempt at inclusiveness" has became mostly a slur 2806:10A6:7:CBDC:B976:E293:78A4:CC3B (talk) 06:45, 29 August 2025 (UTC) |
