Because they belonged to the Spanish Empire about the same time most Spanish American colonies did, and following Anglo's logic, they should be called Hispanics as well.
They were not colonies of Spain and do not speak Spanish. They were part of the holy roman empire. You are literally just wrong about their relationship with Spain and the Spanish culture and language. Meskarune (talk) 09:40, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Brazilians speak Portuguese. They were a colony of Portugal NOT Spain. The term Hispanic refers only to the people from former colonies of the Spanish empire who speak Spanish today. Meskarune (talk) 09:43, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
to use the word precedence case basic to the United States I would like to know: which words corresponding to Hispanic do exist? Sarcelles (talk) 22:11, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The term Hispanic has never referred to Spain or Spaniards or former Spanish colonies in Asia.
The term Hispanic was invented for use in the US in the 1970s by Mexican-American, Cuban-American and Puerto Rican activists who made the term in order to have the US government use it in the census. See: https://daily.jstor.org/where-did-the-term-hispanic-come-from/
The term Hispanic absolutely does not mean people from Spain or people from the Philippines or anyone outside North, Central and South America and parts of the Caribbean where the primary language is Spanish. If you check the linked 'sources' for calling people from Spain "Hispanic" the sources literally do not say this at all. This entire article has the wrong history, wrong etymology and wrong list of Hispanic groups of people and none of this wrong information is even supported by the linked sources.
