Morphcast is an American software company that develops emotion artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Its main product is a browser-based facial analysis system that operates entirely on the user's device, designed to interpret facial expressions without transmitting biometric data to external servers.[1]

History

[edit]

Morphcast originated from the Italian company Cynny S.p.A., founded in 2013 in Florence by entrepreneur Stefano Bargagni, who had previously founded the e-commerce company CHL.[2] Cynny’s research, conducted in collaboration with the Media Integration and Communication Center at the University of Florence, focused on real-time adaptive media driven by users’ emotions.[3] In 2016, the company received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme for the project Real time video creation according to your emotions.[4]

In 2024, Cynny S.p.A. entered liquidation after a planned capital increase failed.[5] Its assets, including patents and software, were acquired by the U.S.-based Chrysalis Venture Inc. for €490,000, which was subsequently renamed Morphcast Inc.[6] The new company established its headquarters in California and continued development of the same emotion AI technology.[7]

Technology

[edit]

Morphcast’s software performs facial-expression analysis directly in the web browser using client-side AI processing.[8] This design aims to improve privacy and reduce latency by keeping all data processing local to the user’s device.[9] The system draws on established psychological models of emotion, such as Paul Ekman’s theory of six basic emotions andJames Russell’s circumplex model of affect.[10]

A 2020 study published in PLOS ONE compared eight commercial facial-affect recognition systems and included Morphcast’s SDK among the tested products.[11]

Recognition

[edit]

Applications developed using Morphcast’s technology have received multiple recognitions at the Webby Awards:

  • The Adaptive-Media Interview Coach – 2022 Winner, Virtual & Remote: Science & Education category.[12][13]
  • Ms Rose, Adaptive Media Math Tutor – 2023 Nominee, AI, Metaverse & Virtual: Science & Education category.[14]
  • Votre Coach Personnel (VCP) – 2024 Honoree, AI, Metaverse & Virtual: Science & Education category.[15]

The company has also been listed in industry analyses as a vendor in the emotion AI sector.[1]
