Katie Silver is an Australian journalist and presenter.[1] for the BBC[2]. She presents business and science news across the BBC’s television and radio platforms, including the BBC World Service.[3][4][5]
She has also reported for major United States outlets, including CBS News[6], NPR[7][8], and content simulcast on PBS[9].
Silver also works as a moderator[10], events host[11][12], and media trainer.
Fluent in Spanish, she has broadcast and translated live from Argentina and Spain, and written long-form pieces for BBC Mundo[13][14][15]. She has also reported on breaking news for Latin American television programs in Spanish[16].
Early life and education
[edit]Silver was born in Sydney, Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney[17], as well as a postgraduate Honours degree in psychology, where she researched the impact of psycholinguistics in media reporting[18].
She lived and studied in Canada, Argentina, and Mexico, completing her honours thesis on Latin American geo-economics and writing for the Guadalajara Reporter[19].
She also lived in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on an Australian Government scholarship programme, the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP)[20], and worked with broadcaster TVRI. Through this, she learned Indonesian and has been quoted in coverage of Australia–Indonesia relations[21][22][23]
Career
[edit]Before joining the BBC, Silver worked as a reporter with CNN in New York[24], ABC in Australia[25], and Sky News in both Australia and the United Kingdom[26].
With her background in science, she produced documentaries for ABC Radio National[27] on topics such as endometriosis, fertility, obesity, psychology[28], and coral bleaching, receiving international recognition for her work[29].
She was also a science blogger for ScienceAlert[30].
Since joining the BBC, Silver has been based in London and Singapore, reporting widely across Asia and beyond[31].
She has covered elections, G20 summits, and World Cups, and her reporting on Singapore’s policies during the COVID-19 pandemic included an interview with Lawrence Wong that contributed to subsequent parliamentary debate and was widely cited by local media[32].
Silver was a climate-economics fellow at NYU Stern[33] and received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for vaccine reporting.
She also writes long-form feature pieces for The Saturday Paper[34], BBC Future[35], and BBC Earth, focusing on business and science coverage. She moderates at business conferences[36] and science events[37], including those hosted by the Royal Institution[38].
