Draft:Just Like You Films

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just Like You Films is an American nonprofit film production company founded in 2009 by filmmaker and former prosecutor Jen Greenstreet. The organization produces educational documentaries and short films that promote empathy, understanding, and inclusion for individuals living with medical conditions, unique circumstances, and mental health challenges. Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Just Like You Films (JLYF) has created award-winning works that have been showcased in schools, hospitals, film festivals, and AMC Theatres across the United States.[1]

History

[edit]

Jen Greenstreet founded Just Like You Films in 2009 after transitioning from her career as a prosecuting attorney in Jackson County, Missouri. Greenstreet sought to use storytelling as a means to reduce bullying and stigma associated with medical conditions and visible differences. Since its inception, JLYF has produced films about autism, Down syndrome, diabetes, cancer, facial anomalies, and other conditions, reaching audiences in over 25,000 schools worldwide.[1]

In 2017, JLYF released Just Like You: Facial Anomalies, which debuted in partnership with AMC Theatres alongside the release of the feature film Wonder. The documentary featured real children with facial anomalies and their friends sharing their experiences, alongside commentary from journalist Hannah Storm and Operation Smile founder Dr. Bill Magee.[2]

Notable Works

[edit]

JLYF’s filmography includes over 20 short films and several feature-length documentaries addressing health and social issues. Notable titles include:

  • Just Like You: Food Allergies (2025) – A VR docu-drama co-produced by actors August Maturo and Ava Kolker, dramatizing life with severe food allergies. The film aims to raise awareness about invisible diseases and was developed in collaboration with FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education).[3][4]
  • Just Like You: Anxiety and Depression (2022) – Explores teen mental health, featuring interviews with students, broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre, and UCLA psychiatrist Dr. Artha Gillis. The film was featured in a UCLA Health program highlighting the youth mental health crisis.[5]
  • Just Like You: Autism (2015) – Produced in partnership with the education nonprofit Changing Perspectives, this project formed part of a 30-day online empathy-building program during Autism Awareness Month.[6]

Awards and Recognition

[edit]

Just Like You Films and its founder Jen Greenstreet have received multiple honors, including two Mid-America Emmy Awards, the Gold Anthem Award from the Webby Awards, the Telly Award, and recognition at film festivals such as FIVARS, the Kansas City International Film Festival, and the Golden Door International Film Festival.[1] Greenstreet has also been recognized with the Kindest Kansas Citian Award and the City Year Kansas City Idealist of the Year Award.

Partnerships and Outreach

[edit]

The organization has collaborated with several advocacy and educational groups, including UCLA Health, FARE, Operation Smile, and Changing Perspectives. Its films are distributed free of charge to educators, parents, and community organizations to promote empathy and reduce bullying. In 2023, JLYF partnered with fashion brand Alivia to feature artwork from its film participants on a collection titled "The Hope Scarf," with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit.[7]
