DigitalPlat FreeDomain is a free domain registration service operated by the non-profit DigitalPlat Foundation.[3] It offers registration under extensions such as .DPDNS.ORG, .US.KG, .QZZ.IO, and .XX.KG.[3] The initiative aims to lower financial barriers to publishing online for developers, students, and individual users.[3]

History

[edit]

DigitalPlat FreeDomain was launched in August 2023 by Edward Hsing under the DigitalPlat Foundation’s mission to make internet infrastructure more open and accessible.[2] In August 2025, several technology news outlets reported that the project operated as a non-profit service offering free domain registration under extensions such as .DPDNS.ORG, .US.KG, .QZZ.IO, and .XX.KG.[4] According to these reports, the platform provides domains without registration or renewal fees, with the stated goal of lowering financial barriers to creating and maintaining websites.[4]

Controversies

[edit]

Abuse and temporary suspension

[edit]

In late 2024, the us.kg domain, operated under the DigitalPlat FreeDomain system, was temporarily suspended after reports emerged that some users had registered subdomains for spam or fraudulent activities.[5] During the suspension, the registration portal displayed a notice stating that new account sign-ups were paused "until the new KYC system is fully implemented." The action was described by cybersecurity blogs as part of an abuse mitigation effort following the platform’s rapid growth in late 2023.

A separate report from the cybersecurity publication SecurityOnline.info confirmed that the us.kg domain was set to “Inactive” by the .KG registry on December 25, 2024, causing all registered subdomains to become temporarily unreachable.[6] According to the report, the suspension lasted for about a day before full restoration. The article also noted that free domains are "often favored by malicious actors due to their low cost and disposable nature," highlighting broader security challenges among free domain providers.
