북할마헤라어족(North Halmahera)은 인도네시아 말루쿠 제도의 할마헤라섬과 주변의 몇몇 도서에서 사용되는 언어들이 이루는 어족이다. 섬의 남서부에서는 오스트로네시아어족에 속한 남할마헤라어군 언어들이 사용된다. 서뉴기니 지역의 버즈헤드 반도에서 쓰이는 언어들과 밀접한 연관이 있다고 생각되나, 명확히 입증된 것은 없다.^[1]

주요 언어로 중세에 이 지역의 무역 언어로 역할하던 트르나테어와 티도레어가 있다. 대부분의 소속 언어는 서로 유사성이 높으며 관련성이 잘 입증되어 있다. 다만 마키안섬 서부 지역에서 쓰이는 서마키아어는 유독 다른데, 이는 오스트로네시아어의 강한 영향에 의한 것이며 한때 오스트로네시아어의 일종으로 분류되기까지 했다.^[2]^[3]^[4] 북할마헤라어는 대부분의 인도네시아의 언어들과 계통적으로 다르지만 이 지역에서 지배적인 오스트로네시아어족과 광범위하게 접촉하였다.^[5]
