"Get Right" is the first single from Jennifer Lopez's fifth album Rebirth. Released February 28, 2005 in the UK and March 15, 2005 in the U.S., the single peaked at #12 becoming Lopez's 10th Top 20 single in the U.S.; it also peaked at #1 in the UK, becoming her first #1 in the UK for four years. The single is most notable for its looping blaring horn sample usage of a part of Maceo & the Macks' "Soul Power '74".

Song information

The song was written by Rich Harrison and produced by Harrison and Cory Rooney. The song is built around a horn sample of the song, "Soul Power '74" written by James Brown. In this funk club number, Lopez describes her impatient experiences with a man she meets at a nightclub. He's looking just a little too hard at her, and standing just a bit too close to her, yet he's not saying quite enough for her. Lopez is intrigued by the man, but does not waste time in small talk, causing her to propose, "I'm about to sign you up, we can get right, Before the night is up, we can get riiiiiiiight get riiiiiiight, we can get right..."

The song has attracted some controversy. Originally, "Get Right" had started out as a song called "Ride" that had been meant for Usher's album, Confessions. Like "Get Right", "Ride" utilized the same blaring horn sample. However, "Ride" did not make the cut for Confessions nor its rerelease. Harrison then brought the track to Lopez's attention and some melodies and lyrics were restructured to create "Get Right". However, Usher, Harrison, and Lopez did not speak publicly of the matter, and as a result, "Ride" remained unknown to the public. However, in early 2005, "Ride" was leaked to the Internet. This caused controversy among music media and the fans of Usher. Usher, himself also released a negative comment publicly, but Lopez did not comment. Vorlage:Fact

Music video

Lopez in "Get Right"

The main video portrays Lopez playing different characters at a nightclub, such as a DJ (the main character), a Go-Go dancer dancing upon the bar, a bartender, a nerdy and shy girl, a superstar, and other personalities attending the club. The end of the song features Marc Anthony's daughter, Arianna, singing along with the music which is shown at the video - she is portrayed as the DJ character's little sister, as her mom is at work. There is also the remix video featuring rapper Fabolous that takes segments from the main video and extending them against a gray backgrop. The dancing mainly consists of Lopez dancing with a cane in an old Hollywood sideshow styled dance routine. The other segments are Lopez basically dancing un-choreographed to the beat. All dance routines appear on screens throughout the club, as Jennifer explains on MTV's Making the Video, "A video within a video."

This is not the first time Lopez has been a cause for controversy for using another artist's idea. She also used without permission a "firecracker" sample for "I'm real", originally used in the original "Loverboy" recordings by Mariah Carey for the [[Glitter (Mariah Carey album)]] soundtrack.

Parody

On an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, broadcast May 16, 2005, Ellen introduces Jennifer as a guest, starting the segment of with: "the only way to describe my next guest is as my dancing partner, check it out..." A video VT plays of her joining in to the dance choreography of "Get Right". The director shouts "action!" and dancing rather badly to the guide track, on purpose for laughs, Ellen prances around the soundstage trying to keep up with the dancers.
