Ian Charles Athfield, born in Christchurch, 15 July, 1940 is a New Zealand architect. Athfield graduated with a Diploma of Architecture from the Auckland School of Architecture in 1963 and was a principal partner in setting up Athfield Architects in 1968. He established his reputation with small-scale domestic buildings during the 1970s. Additive plans, fragmented forms and allusions to the traditions of New Zealand colonial architecture characterise designs such as Athfield House, Wellington (begun 1968), and Cox House, Wellington (1975). In 1976 he won first prize in the International Competition for the Urban Environment of Developing Countries with a community-based project for rehousing Manila slum dwellers.
