The Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV) is a heavily modified Ford F-450 truck used as a storm chasing platform and built by IMAX director Sean Casey. This heavily armored vehicle can drive into a relatively weak tornado (EF0 to EF3) to film it and take measurements. Some people may call it "Dumb and Dumber without the fur", quoting Sean Casey, because of its resemblance to the "sheepdog van" of that movie. The TIV is featured in a series called Storm Chasers which began airing on the Discovery Channel in October 2007[1].
Casey and his team have developed and built the second Tornado Intercept Vehicle, dubbed "TIV 2," to be featured in their next IMAX movie and the Storm Chasers series.It debuted for the 2008 Tornado Chasing Season. It is based on a modified Dodge 1 Ton Truck Frame and is powered by a modified Cummins Diesel engine. It features an added third axle that gives it 6 wheel drive for all terrain situations. [2].
