ReactOS is a project to develop an operating system that is compatible with software for Microsoft Windows 2000 and its successors. This is an important thing because there are no other ways to run software made for Windows than to run it on Windows. In 2012, the project is in its first stage of development still. ReactOS is not based on Linux or Unix. ReactOS uses some code from the Wine project, which makes some Windows programs compatible with Linux.
