This was originally quoted as 12 September1850 as noted in a couple of books / web sites. A larger number of reference material gives the date as the 2 September1850.
I have changed the article to the latter as it would appear to be the correct date. Logically it is also correct as it is a Monday when one would expect a new service to start rather than on a Thursday which the former date is.
If anyone has any better information then please feal free to change it.
