WordprocessingML is the name of two separate storage formats for word processing documents. Both of these formats are XML-based markup languages. The older of these formats, also referred to as WordML and Microsoft Office Word 2003 XML Reference Schemas, debuted in Microsoft Office Word 2003. The newer of these formats supersedes the original WordML format, replaces the binary .DOC format as the default file format in Word 2007 and forms, along with the new SpreadsheetML and PresentationML, part of the new Microsoft Office Open XML standards. These formats are in the process of approval by an international standards body (ECMA). In order to spur the adoption of these formats, comply with governments' concerns about information availability, and resolve third-party developers' lingering doubts about their "openness," Microsoft has irrevocably placed these formats under a covenant not to sue. See Comparison of OpenDocument and Microsoft Office Open XML licensing for more information.
