The Erasmus programme forms a major part of the European Unionss Socrates programme. The aim of the Erasmus programme is to encourage and support academic mobility of higher education students and teachers within the European Union and a number of associated countries such as Norway and Iceland.

The European Commisson has proposed an Integrated programme for Life-long learning to replace the programmes within the Socrates programme from 2006.
