Wikipedia:WikiProject Transporter Classification Database

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an old revision of this page, as edited by MediaWiki message delivery (talk | contribs) at 15:18, 1 October 2014 (Comment on the WikiProject X proposal: new section). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

The Transporter Classification Database (or TCDB) is an International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) approved classification system for membrane transport proteins including ion channels. This classification system was designed to be analogous to the EC number system for classifying enzymes, but it also uses phylogenetic information.

This WikiProject is an effort to integrate information from this database into Wikipedia as appropriate.

Project

The TCDB team proposes to add TCDB family descriptions to Wikipedia either by integrating the content of existing pages or by creating entirely new ones. This will allow people searching for this information to find it more easily and for TCDB to reach a much wider audience. At the same time, the Wikipedia-published family descriptions will serve as 'seed' topics where scientists all over the world can share insight and expand on our current understandings. This approach has been successfully pioneered by databases such as Rfam and Pfam, and we will rely on our Pfam collaborators to help us find the most effective way to add our descriptions to Wikipedia, to the benefit of Wikipedia users, TCDB, and everyone interested in biochemistry.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time!
