A BBC Programme Identifier (PID) is an 8-character, alphanumeric unique identifier for a television or radio programme, season or series, used by the BBC in their we URLs, [iPlayer]] viewers, and internal databases.[1]

For example, the PID for the series The Life Scientific is b015sqc7;[2] the PID for the episoade first broadcast on 8 July 014 is b048l0g3.[3]

The BBC also encourages viewers and listeners to machine tag media on social sites such as Flickr using PIDs.[1]
