Some Wikipedians have formed this collaboration resource and group, whose aim is:
- To improve Wikipedia's coverage of statistics and the organization of information and articles on this topic.
This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to do lists below.
This WikiProject covers articles related to statistics, including the history of statistics and biographies of statisticians. Articles within its scope include those in:
- List of statistics topics
- Category:Statistics and its sub-categories
- Category:Statisticians and its sub-categories
An expandable tree view of subcategories of Category:Statistics is available at CategoryTree->Statistics.
As of 2 November 2025, there are 5,422 articles within the scope of WikiProject Statistics, of which 3 are featured and 22 are good articles. This makes up 0.08% of the articles on Wikipedia, 0.03% of all featured articles and lists, and 0.05% of all good articles. Including non-article pages, such as talk pages, redirects, categories, etcetera, there are 10,844 pages in the project. Approximately 48% of the articles in the scope of this project have been marked as requiring some form of attention.
The list of statistics topics is being extended to include existing articles not previously listed and any new or unlisted statistics-related articles should be added. The list contains 2642 items, including some redirects (17 October 2011: was 2233 on 29 July 2009: was 1731 on 31 December 2008: was 945 on 22 May 2008). The list is not at present very sophisticated and this project could undertake general improvements given that lists are far more versatile than categories. Look at list of mathematics articles and lists of mathematics topics.
Some priority articles that the project hopes to make progress with are those in:
Guidelines
Here are general guidelines for different types of articles in the project.
- Consider adding one of these navigational boxes to the end of the article:
- {{Statistics}} (example: Statistical hypothesis testing)
- {{Least squares and regression analysis}} (example: Nonlinear regression)
- {{Experimental design}} (example: Randomized block design)
- {{Medical research studies}} (example: Randomized controlled trial)
- {{Statistics journals}} (example: The American Statistician)
- {{ProbDistributions}} (example: Binomial distribution)
- {{Theory of probability distributions}} (example: Probability mass function)
- Add {{WPStatistics}} to the article's discussion page
- Tag the discussion page with
{{maths rating|field=probability and statistics | importance= | class=}}- using appropriate values for the class and importance parameters as described here.
General statistics articles
- Use one or more sub-category of Category:Statistics
- Tag stubs with {{statistics-stub}}
Probability distributions
- Include either the {{Probability distribution}} (e.g., Negative binomial distribution) or the {{Probability distribution two}} (e.g., Geometric distribution) infobox (feel free to leave some parameters blank)
- Add an appropriate sub-category of Category:Probability distributions
- Tag stubs with {{probability-stub}}
Biographies of statisticians
- Include {{infobox scientist}} with all known information.
- Add Category:Statisticians or one of its sub-categories
- Make sure you follow the policy on Biographies of living persons
- Add {{WPBiography}} to the article's discussion page (include "|living=yes" to the template for living persons)
- Tag stubs with {{statistician-stub}}, {{UK-statistician-stub}} or {{US-statistician-stub}}
Participants
Please feel free to add (or delete) your name below, and to indicate any areas of particular interest. You may also wish to add {{User WikiProject Statistics}} to your User page, which will add your name to Category:WikiProject Statistics members.
The first eleven names below are of those who signed up during the initial discussion on WikiProject Council/Proposals, as archived at /Proposal.

Review and assessment
Statistics
The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WikiProject Statistics}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Statistics articles by quality and Category:Statistics articles by importance. A log of recent changes is available here.

Mathematics Wikiproject:probability and statistics
WikiProject Mathematics has a well-established sub-project for assessing articles at WikiProject Mathematics/Wikipedia 1.0 that tabulates articles tagged with {{maths rating|field=probability and statistics}}. Full details are at WikiProject Mathematics/Wikipedia 1.0/Probability and statistics.
| Mathematics pages by quality | |||||||

Other potentially useful fields instead of "probability and statistics" are: "mathematical physics" for topics in statistical mechanics; "mathematicians" for biographies.
A ranking of articles on statistical topics by recent page views is at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Statistics/Popular_pages.

Templates
Category:Statistics templates and Category:Template-Class Statistics articles include templates used by this project.
Portal
You can insert a link to the statistics portal (like the one shown at the right) by adding {{Portal|Statistics}} to the article — usually in the "See also" section (or equivalent).
Banners
If you find an article that falls under the scope of this project, feel free to add this banner to the top of its talk page by typing {{WPStatistics}} (or {{WikiProject Statistics}}), which will produce:
| Statistics | |||||||

Articles that show this banner on the talk page are automatically included in the WikiProject Statistics articles category.
{{Stats banner}} is intended to identify pages, other than articles, as part of WikiProject Statistics. It should be used instead of {{WPStatistics}} on categories, templates and the like. This banner should not be used on article talk pages.
This page is part of WikiProject Statistics.
