Field emitter array

A field emitter array is a vacuum electronics device, made of a substrate on which small "Spindt tips" are microfabricated. Upon receiving a voltage, the tips emit electrons by field emission, functioning like a cold cathode.

Spindt, Shoulders, and Heynick filed a U.S. Patent[1] in 1970 for a vacuum device comprising an array of emitter tips.
