Introduction

Web Cache Coordination Protocol (WCCP) is a protocol that provides a mechanism to redirect traffic flows in real-time. It has built-in load balancing, scaling, fault tolerance, and service-assurance (failsafe) mechanisms.

Protocol Versions

WCCPv1

  • supports HTTP traffic flows
  • provides generic routing encapsulation (GRE) to prevent packet modification

WCCPv2

  • supports protocols other than HTTP
  • allows for use across multiple routers
  • adds MD5 security
  • adds load distribution
