GWR 517 Class

The 517 Class were 0-4-2T tank engines designed by Joseph Armstrong as saddle tanks and built for the Great Western Railway at Wolverhampton and were outshopped between 1868 and 1876. They were originally the 1040 class but became the 517 class. Driving wheels were 5ft 0in, cylinders 15in x 24in. The earlier ones were rebuilt from saddle tanks while the later ones were built as side tanks from the beginning. None have survived into preservation preservation.
