iPad Air is a line of tablet computers developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is a sub-series of the main iPad line of tablets, with lighter and thinner designs than the regular iPad and iPad Mini. The first-generation Air was announced on October 22, 2013 and released on November 1.
The successor to the original iPad Air, the iPad Air 2, which included a faster A8X processor and Touch ID, was announced on October 16, 2014 and released on October 22, 2014. The iPad Air (3rd generation), with an A12 processor, a larger 10.5-inch display and support for the Apple Pencil, was announced on March 18, 2019 and released on the same day. The iPad Air (4th generation), with a 10.9-inch all-screen display, support for newer accessories[vague] and a more powerful A14 Bionic chip. A fifth-generation Air was announced on March 8, 2022 and released on March 18; improvements included an M1 chip (found in the earlier 5th-generation iPad Pro), a front camera with Center Stage technology and 5G support on cellular models. The 6th-generation Air, with an additional 13" size in addition to the original 10.9" (marketed as 11"), a faster M2 chip and support for Apple Pencil Pro, was announced on May 7, 2024 and released on May 15. A seventh-generation Air, which included a faster M3 chip, was announced on March 4, 2025 and March 12.[citation needed]

Features
[edit]Software
[edit]The iPad Air line, as with all iPads, runs iOS (before 2019) or iPadOS (since 2019), both of which feature a touchscreen-based user interface. Users navigate the system by touching and swiping the screen. Every iPad Air is shipped with several pre-installed applications (for example Safari, the App Store and Photos). Like every iOS device (including every other iPad model), content can be synced to a PC or Mac or through Apple's iCloud online service. Although the iPads were not designed to make use of telephone calls over a cellular network, users can still perform phone calls over Wi-Fi and VoIP services, for example Apple's own FaceTime application.[citation needed]
The aforementioned App Store application allows users to download additional applications to their device. Optional apps that can be downloaded from the App Store include GarageBand, iMovie and the iWork office suite (comprising Pages, Numbers and Keynote).[citation needed]
Additionally, in extension to the App Store, ebooks are accessible via the Apple Books service. Users can access books in ePub and PDF format, and can buy ebooks via the included bookstore or import their own from the device.[citation needed]
Starting with iOS 9 (and expanded with iPadOS 16 and 26), users can access multitasking controls on the iPad Air. iOS 9 brought multitasking features like Slide Over (one app windowed over another), Picture-in-Picture and Split View (two apps running side-by-side). The latter could only be accessed by the 2nd-generation Air or later. iPadOS 16 added the Stage Manager windowing system to the 5th-generation Air, which featured an Apple M1 chip. iPadOS 26 removed all previous windowing options except Stage Manager and introduced a completely new macOS-style windowing system to every supported iPad Air.[citation needed]
The current version of iPadOS, iPadOS 26, was released in 2025 and is supported by every iPad Air from the 3rd-generation model onwards. The 1st-generation Air came pre-installed with iOS 7 and last supported iOS 12.5.7.[citation needed]
