The following is a list of unproduced Scott Derrickson projects in roughly chronological order. During his long career, American film director Scott Derrickson has worked on several projects which never progressed beyond the pre-production stage under his direction. Some of these projects fell in development hell, were officially canceled, were in development limbo or would see life under a different production team.

1990s

Darkness Falling

On March 15, 1999, Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman co-write the screenplay Darkness Falling, with Bryan Singer attached to produce with Columbia Pictures set to distribute.[1]

2000s

Future Tense

On April 17, 2001, Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman co-write the World War 3 screenplay Future Sense based a story by Wagner James Au, with Derrickson attached to direct, Sean O’Keefe and Dave Cohen producing through Artist Production Group with Studiocanal set to distribute.[2]

The Mystic

On April 17, 2001, Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman co-write the screenplay The Mystic, with Derrickson attached to direct, and Dimension Films set to distribute.[2]

Ghosting

On April 17, 2001, Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman co-write the screenplay Ghosting, with Derrickson attached to direct and Dimension Films set to distribute.[2]

Mindbender

On April 17, 2001, Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman co-write the screenplay Mindbender, with Derrickson attached to direct, with Platinum Dunes producing and Dimension Films set to distribute.[2]

Hyperion film

On January 29, 2009, Derrickson was set to direct the feature film adaptation of Dan Simmons’ novel Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion, with Trevor Sands writing the screenplay, Graham King producing and Warner Bros. set to distribute,[3] until 2015, Bradley Cooper was attached to produce a television series adaptation for Syfy without Derrickson’s involvement,[4] and then, on November 1, 2021, Cooper, King, and Warner Bros. revived the feature film adaptation with Tom Spezialy writing the screenplay without Derrickson’s involvement still.[5]

American The Substitute remake

On October 2, 2009, Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman co-write the American remake of Ole Bornedal’s film The Substitute with Derrickson attached to direct, Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert producing through Ghost House Pictures with Columbia Pictures set to distribute.[6]

The Living

On October 19, 2009, Derrickson was set to direct and produce the film “The Living,” with Paul Harris Boardman producing along with Lakeshore Entertainment’s Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi.[7]

2010s

Goliath

On January 7, 2011, Derickson was set to direct J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay’s action screenplay “Goliath” about Goliath seeking to kill David, with Temple Hill Productions’ Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen producing along with Relativity Media,[8] and later that August, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was in talks to portray Goliath and Relativity offered the role of David to Taylor Lautner.[9]

American Two Eyes Staring remake

On October 18, 2011, Derrickson was going to direct and produce the American remake of Elbert van Strien’s film Two Eyes Staring and co-write with Paul Harris Boardman, Charlize Thereon starring and producing along with Boardman, Elbert van Strien, J. J. Harris, Beth Kono & Claudia Brandt, and Summit Entertainment to distribute.[10]

Thunderstuck TV series

On November 25, 2011, Derrickson was set to direct the pilot episode of “Thunderstruck,” an hourlong drama series about powerful and enigmatic extraterrestrial sightings around Great Falls, Montana, with Derrickson writing and producing with Paul Harris Boardman in collaboration with David Eick for AMC to broadcast.[11]

The Breathing Method film

On October 15, 2012, Derrickson was set to direct and co-write the script for an adaptation of the Stephen King novella The Breathing Method, with Scott Teems co-writing for Blumhouse Productions to produce the movie.[12]

Deus Ex film

On November 15, 2012, Derrickson was set to direct a film adaptation of the video game franchise Deus Ex, with C. Robert Cargill co-writing with Derrickson for CBS Films to produce the movie along with Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment and Adrian Askarieh.[13][14]

When Gravity Fails film

On March 22, 2013, Derrickson was set to direct the feature film adaptation of George Alec Effinger’s novel “When Gravity Fails,” and co-write the script with C. Robert Cargill.[15]

The Outer Limits film

On June 19, 2014, Derrickson was set to direct and co-write the film adaptation of The Outer Limits episode Demon with a Glass Hand, with Mark Victor producing the movie adaptation and MGM set to distribute.[16]

2020s

Bermuda

On March 4, 2020, Derrickson was set to direct the action adventure movie “Bermuda” and re-write the script with C. Robert Cargill, Chris Evans attached to star and David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Bonnie Curtis & Julie Lynn for Skydance Media,[17] until Marc Webb replaced him in 2023.[18]

Labyrinth 2

On May 26, 2020, Derrickson was set to direct a sequel to Jim Henson’s film Labyrinth, with Maggie Levin writing the screenplay and Derrickson producing with C. Robert Cargill, Lisa Henson & Brian Henson, and TriStar Pictures set to distribute the film.[19]

Room 428

On August 5, 2022, Derrickson was set to produce “Room 428,” a horror film written & directed by the Pierce Brothers, with C. Robert Cargill & Sherryl Clark, and Screen Gems set to distribute the film.[20]
