It seems to me that typical (really, all?) F.E. arrays emit significant current (collectively) at only modest applied voltages. So far, reading this article, as well as the referred section in the Vacuum Tubes article, it seems that a main point (pun) has not received nearly the emphasis it merits, and that is, at the emitter tips, a very high field gradient exists, because the equivalent (or actual) tip radius is so tiny.

I don't know enough about the topic to edit the articles, but I do suspect that a key technical point – very small radius tips, and consequent high field gradient – is almost neglected.
