Playdata Charts is a weekly airplay chart, measuring songs being played on radio stations in Nigeria,[1] and published on its website, with data gathered from its proprietary PlayData Broadcast Monitoring service. The company was founded by Nigerian retired singer eLDee (born. Lanre Dabiri), and it provides a weekly top 100 airplay chart (previously top 10 until 2017). Its first chart issue was released on 10 January 2016, and led by Adekunle Gold "Pick Up".It serves as Nigeria's official radio music chart[2] from 10 January 2016, to 31 December 2017. It also publishes a yearly chart, titled 40 Most Played Songs in Nigeria (previously 100 until 2017).
Chart history
In 2016, Phyno "Fada Fada (Ghetto Gospel)", peaked at number 1, for the week of June 12, 2016, to August 14, 2016.[3] After spending 10 consecutive weeks on the chart, Phyno "Fada Fada (Ghetto Gospel)"[4] returns back to the chart at number 1, for the week of December 25, 2016. Tekno "Pana", peaked at number 1, for the week of August 21, 2016 to December 4, 2016, spending 16 consecutive weeks on the chart,[5] and making it the most charted song in 2016. P-Square "Bank Alert", peaked at number 1, on the week of December 11, 2016, and returned to chart in the week of January 1, 2017.[6] Wizkid "Daddy Yo" peaked at number 1, on the week of Januray 29, 2017.[7] Runtown held the chart with "Mad Over You", spending 8 consecutive weeks on chart, from the week of February 5, 2017 to the week of March 5, 2017.[2] According to The Guardian Nigeria, Life Magazine author Beatrice Porbeni, she described Mad Over You, as one of the most played songs in Nigeria, and almost charted for ten weeks, on Nigeria Playdata radio chart.[8]
Defunct
The company became defunct in 2018, shortly after publishing its second edition of the Year-end chart for the year 2017, led by Davido "If". The chart was succeeded by TurnTable in 2020. During the lunch of TurnTable, for the week of November 9, 2020, The Native, made references to Playdata, saying "Hopefully, it doesn't go the way eLDee Playdata did".[9]
