The Subway 400 is the second race of the NASCAR Nextel Cup season, held a week after the Daytona 500. This 400 mile (644 km) annual race is sponsored by Subway and has been held at North Carolina Speedway (The Rock) since 1966. From 1966 to 1995, a 500 mile (805 km) race was held; the race was initially known as the Carolina 500 (1966-1985), and then as the Goodwrench 500 (1986-1995). In 1996, the race was shortened to its current distance of 400 miles; the 400 mile race has been called the Goodwrench Service 400 (1996-1997), the KMart/Dura Lube 400 (1998-2001), and the Subway 400 (2002-present).

Until the 2004 Nextel Cup season, two annual races were held at Rockingham. After the 2003 season, the fall race (the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400) — which was held in November — was moved to California Speedway, to be held on the lucrative Labor Day weekend. This has displaced the Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, which has been moved to November. This is part of the trend of less races being held in the southeast and a broader distribution across the United States.

Kannagi, a mythological Tamil woman, is the central character of the tamil epic Silapathikaram. Legend has it that Kannagi took revenge on the king of Madurai, for a mistaken death penalty imposed on her husband Kovalan, by cursing the city with holocaust.

[[Image:kannagi.jpeg|thumb|right|A statue of Kannagi in Chennai. Photo downloaded from The Hindu through google search]]

History
Kannagi and Kovalan lived happily, in the city of Kaveripoompattinam, until Madhavi crossed their lives. Kovalan got entangled in love with Madhavi and started to live with her. Having lost all his wealth over the dancer, Kovalan realised his mistake, and returned back to Kannagi. Later, they decided to migrate to Madurai in search of greener pastures. The city of Madurai was ruled by the Pandiya king Neduncheziyan. Upon arrival to Madurai, Kannagi gave one of her anklets to Kovalan to sell it for money.

Kovalan, while on his way to sell the anklet, was held by the king's guards for the alleged theft of queen's anklet. It was the court goldsmith who robbed the anklets. Unaware of this, the king ordered to behead Kovalan for the theft and eventually Kovalan was killed. To prove her husband's innocence, Kannagi came to the king's court, broke open her other anklet and showed that it had stones different than those of the queen's anklets. Irked by the false trial, Kannagi cursed that the entire city be destroyed. Due to her utmost chastity, her curse became a reality.

The city was set ablaze resulting in huge human and economic losses. However, after the request from the goddess of the city, she withdrew her curse and later, attained salvation. This mythological story was literalized by a great tamil poet Illango Adigal. A fascinating, but ironical, fact about this epic is that it portrays Madhavi, the Kovalan's amorous lover, as an equally chaste woman. Manimekalai, another epic, is written on praise of her. The city of Kaveripoompattinam has been re-christened as Poompohar.

Goddess of Chastity
Kannagi is eulogized as the epitome of chastity and is still being worshipped as its goddess. She is praised for her extreme devotion to her husband, inspite of his infidel behaviour. However, a section of modern women do not approve her submissive attitude towards her husband's amorous activity and brand her has a symbol of female oppression. In fact, the chief minister of Tamilnadu, J Jayalalithaa, removed her statue, an important landmark in Chennai, from its place - the exact reason is still not known.
Kentucky Speedway is a relatively new superspeedway located in Sparta, Kentucky, approximately halfway between Louisville, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio, with easy Interstate highway access to both cities, and is additionally less than 100 miles from another fairly sizable market, Lexington, Kentucky. This central location has made it seem to be a natural candidate for a NASCAR Nextel Cup race in addition to the series that it already hosts; however no plans seem to have been made for this, as it would require the move of a race from an existing venue. NASCAR's recent announcement of such moves did not include a Nextel Cup race for Kentucky Speedway.

The Coca-Cola 600 (formerly World 600) is a six hundred mile stock car race held annually at Lowe's Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor Speedway) in Charlotte, North Carolina on Memorial Day weekend. It is the longest NASCAR Nextel Cup (formerly Winston Cup) race and in fact is the longest regularly-scheduled motor race conducted over an oval circuit anywhere in the world.

The event was begun as an attempt by NASCAR to stage a Memorial Day weekend event that would rival the open-wheel Indianapolis 500 in fan interest. In recent years the event has begun in the early evening, with the nighttime portion of the race lit with a system that uses parabolic reflectors so that dangerous glare that would otherwise be in the drivers' eyes is minimized. The move of the race to the early evening has made it possible for drivers to participate in both events by flying from Indianapolis to Charlotte as soon as the Indianapolis race is over. Experts disagree over whether, for health and safety reasons, anyone should be allowed to race 1100 miles in one day, but so far nothing has been done to prevent it.
The Pepsi 400 is the current name for the 400 mile (approx. 640 km) NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car race held on the July 4th weekend at Daytona International Speedway. This 160-lap event was developed to make a second major Cup-level racing event for Daytona which would not detract from the legendary nature of the Daytona 500. In recent years it has been held at night by employing a lighting system using parabolic reflectors which allow very intense lighting to be focused on the track in an indirect manner without being directly in the drivers' eyes, which obviously would create a very unsafe situation. From 1972 to 1988, this race was known as the Firecracker 400; it was unnamed prior to 1972.

The Petticoat Affair (also known as the Eaton Affair or the Eaton Malaria) was an 1813 U.S. sex scandal involving members of President Andrew Jackson's Cabinet.

Margaret "Peggy" O'Neale (or O'Neill) was the daughter of a Washington D.C. boardinghouse owner and was renowned for her "vivacious" temperament—the coded implication being that she was overtly flirtatious and sexual at a time when women, as a group, were not—who lost her first husband, sailor John Timberlake to suicide. He was allegedly driven to it because of rumors of Peggy's love affair with Jackson's Secretary of War John Henry Eaton. Peggy and Eaton were married shortly after Timberlake's death, throwing the respectable women of the capital into a tizzy.

The anti-Peggy coalition was led by the wife of John C. Calhoun and a phlanx of other Cabinet wives, while Martin Van Buren allied himself with the Eatons. Jackson was sympathetic to the Eatons, in part, perhaps, because his own beloved late wife, Rachel Donelson Robards had been the subject of equally nasty innuendo because her first marriage had not been completely dissolved prior to her wedding to Jackson. That said, Jackson's First Lady, his niece Emily Donelson, sided with the Calhoun faction.

The scandal was so intense that several members of the Cabinet finally resigned, including Samuel D. Ingham and John Branch, and Van Buren was elevated to a position as Jackson's favorite (replacing Calhoun) and the de facto heir to the Democratic party.
Mount Jackson is a massive mountain that dominates the upland in the southern part of the Antarctic Peninsula. It rises to a majestic summit peak on south and east, while the north flank is occupied by a vast cirque. Alternate names for the mountain include Mount Andrew Jackson and Mount Ernest Gruening.

Discovered by members of the USAS, 1939-41, in aerial flights and sighted by the ground survey party on the plateau. Named by USAS for Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States, who signed the bill authorizing the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-42, led by Lt. Charles Wilkes of the US Navy.

Daisy, sometimes known as Daisy Girl, is perhaps the most famous campaign television commercial of all time. Though it aired only once, it was a factor in Lyndon Johnson's defeat of Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential election, and an important turning point in political and advertising history.

The commercial begins with a small girl picking the petals of a daisy while counting slowly. We then hear an ominous-sounding male voice counting down as the girl turns toward the camera, which zooms in until her pupil fills the screen, blacking it out. Then the countdown reaches zero and the blackness is replaced by the flash and mushroom cloud from a nuclear test. A voiceover from Johnson follows: "These are the stakes! To make a world in which all of God's children can live, or to go into the dark. We must either love each other, or we must die." Another voiceover then says, "Vote for President Johnson on November 3. The stakes are too high for you to stay home."

As soon as the ad aired, Johnson's campaign was widely criticized for using the prospect of nuclear war to frighten voters, and for the obvious implication that Goldwater would start one. The ad was immediately pulled, but the point was made, and a new era in campaign advertising had begun.

It was later used in the music video for Fatboy Slim's Sunset (Bird of Prey).

The figure of Evangeline has since become a central part of Acadian culture, despite Longfellow having no links to it. Evangeline was not a usual Acadian name before the poem, but today it is commonplace.

Henry Somerset (1629 - January 21, 1699/1700) was the first Duke of Beaufort. He was previously the 3rd Marquess of Worcester, having inherited that title on the death of his father Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquess of Worcester on April 3, 1667. The new English dukedom was bestowed upon him by King Charles II on December 2, 1682, in recognition of his "having been eminently serviceable for the king since his most happy restoration, in consideration thereof and of his most noble descent from King Edward III by John de Beaufort, eldest son of John of Gaunt by Katherine Swynford"[1].

Beaufort was invested as Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1672; on April 22nd, 1679 he became Privy Councillor (P.C.); and he held the office of Lord President of Wales (s.a. Wales).

Beaufort later refused to swear allegiance to King William III.

On August 17, 1657, he married Mary Capel, who was the daughter of Arthur Capel, 1st Baron Capel of Hadham, sister of Arthur Capel, 1st Earl of Essex, and widow of Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp. They had three sons and four daughters. The sons were:
# Henry Somerset, Lord Herbert, who died as an infant;
# Charles Somerset, Marquess of Worcester (December, 1660 - July 13, 1698), who had a military and political career;
# Lord Arthur Somerset.
Three of the daughters were:
# Lady Mary Somerset, Lady of the Bedchamber, who was married to James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde as his second wife, and became mother of one son and two daughters;
# Lady Henrietta Somerset, who was married twice, to Henry Horatio O'Brien, Lord O'Brien, with whom she had one son, the 7th Earl of Thomond, and three daughters, and to Henry Howard, 6th Earl of Suffolk as his second wife;
# Lady Anne Somerset, who was married to Thomas Coventry, 2nd Earl of Coventry, and became mother of one son.
The fourth daughter - bearing an unknown name - might have died young.

Beaufort's son Charles died before he could inherit the dukedom, so on the duke's death it passed to Charles's son Henry.

Alexander Campbell (September 12, 1788 - March 4, 1866) was an early leader of a movement that began in 1800, with the goal of removing divisions between Christians, by returning believers in the New Testament to principles of "Truth and Union", which has since been called the Restoration Movement.

Campbell was born in County Antrim, Ireland. He was raised as a Presbyterian, and was in fact the son of a Presbyterian minister, Thomas Campbell, who also became a leader in the Restoration Movement. He was greatly influenced by Scottish Enlightenment philosophy, particularly that of John Locke. In later years he worked in close conjunction with another former Presbyterian minister, Barton W. Stone. He was also a delegate to the Virginia constitutional convention held in the 1830s which led that state toward a more powerful executive branch of government. He was the editor of the Christian periodical The Millenial Harbringer until his death in 1866, and used it to futher his views on Christian unity and the restoration of the true church envisioned in the New Testament. He was also the compiler of a hymnal which consisted of lyrics without any musical notations, which he considered to be suprefulous and hence sinful, and also made his own translation of the New Testament into what was then modern language, but it gained a rather limited acceptance at best, even among his own followers. He was also the founder of Bethany College in Bethany, Virginia (now Bethany, West Virginia), where he spent the bulk of his final years. He wrote several books, of which The Christian System was perhaps the most influential in the Restoration Movement.

Calamine was originally a name for any ore of zinc. The term is still used in the mining industry to refer to both zinc carbonate ZnCO3 and zinc silicate Zn4Si2O7(OH)2.H2O. The two minerals are very similar in appearance, usually they can only be distinguished through chemical analysis.

In mineralogy there have been attempts to restrict the name calamine to one or other of these minerals. Unfortunately there are some differences over how to do this. In the U.S.A. the term calamine is held to refer to zinc silicate, whereas the carbonate is called smithsonite. In Britain, however, the opposite is true and it is zinc carbonate that is called calamine.

The term calamine also refers to a pinkish powder made from a mixture of zinc oxide and iron oxide. This powder is used in lotions and ointments (most famously, calamine lotion) to treat sunburn, eczema, rashes and insect bites and stings. It has a cooling and soothing effect offering symptomatic relief and is a mild antiseptic - preventing infection caused by scratching the affected area.

----

Calamine is also a NYC based indie-pop band. They perform the theme song for the television show Sealab 2021.

__NOTOC__
The cultural movement called the Renaissance was expressed in architecture in new emphasis on rational clarity and regularity of parts, arranged in simple mathematical proportions and in a conscious revival of Roman architectural practice in structure and details.

Renaissance architecture originated in Florence and central Italy in the early 15th century, as an expression of Humanism. In Italy, four phases of Renaissance style can be identified:
# the Early Renaissance of Leone Battista Alberti and Filippo Brunelleschi,
# the High Renaissance of Donato Bramante and Raphael,
# the widely diverging Mannerist tendencies in some work of Michelangelo and Giulio Romano and Andrea Palladio,
# and finally the Baroque of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, in which the same architectural vocabulary was used for very different rhetoric.

When the Renaissance spirit was imported into Spain, France, England, the Low Countries, Germany, Sweden and Poland, the style appeared fully formed, all at once, but compromised with local traditions, and so its phases are not so clearly distinguished in individual buildings.

Works of art that mark important points in Renaissance architecture:
* Santa Maria del Fiore
* Santa Maria Novella
* Santo Spirito
* Ca d'Oro
He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973, being the first Hispanic to be selected, and the only exception since the otherwise mandatory five-year post-retirement waiting period was instituted in 1954.

Clemente was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of four children. He played 18 seasons in the majors from 1955 to 1972, all with the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning the NL MVP Award in 1966.
