History
Family Dollar was founded in 1959 by Leon Levine, a 21-year-old entrepreneur. In November of that year, the company's first store was opened, in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1961, their first store in South Carolina opened, followed by stores in Georgia and Virginia, which were opened in 1962 and 1965, respectively. During the 1960s, the store company was largely a southern United States operation. By 1969, there were fifty stores in Charlotte alone.

The 1970s were growing years for the store chain. In 1970, Family Dollar's stock went public for the first time, at $14.50 per share. In 1971, the chain's 100th store opened, followed by their 200th in 1974 and their 300th in 1978. Also in 1974, a distribution center was opened in Matthews, North Carolina. In 1979, Family Dollar stock began trading at the New York Stock Exchange.

In 1981, the chain's 400th store was opened, followed by a 500th store in 1982 and a 700th in 1983. The 1980s saw expansion at a wider scale for the company, and by 1989, 1,500 stores were operating.

The 1990s saw the pace of expansion slow down compared to the 1980s, with 1,000 stores opened. The company opened distribution centers in West Memphis, Arkansas; Front Royal, Virginia and Duncan, Oklahoma. Since 2000, the pace of growth increased significantly, with the addition of about 3,500 new stores, and new distribution centers opening in Morehead, Kentucky; Maquoketa, Iowa; Odessa, Texas; Marianna, Florida; and Rome, New York.

In 2001, Family Dollar joined the S&P 500 stock market index. In 2002, the company joined the Fortune 500 list of largest publicly held companies.

Early life
All of the following information is derived from Fischbach's statements in his video entitled "Draw My Life - Markiplier".

Fischbach was born on an American military base in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 28, 1985. His father had met his mother while stationed in South Korea.

Shortly after Fischbach was born, his father retired from the Army, and his parents moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where his father found a job as an artist for a publishing company. Fischbach has stated that "one of the things [he misses] most" about living in Cincinnati is playing in the forest behind his home with his brother, Tom, creator of webcomic Twokinds.

"When [they] weren't in the woods," Fischbach and his brother devoted much of their time to "this magical device called" a computer. Fischbach's father introduced him to computers at a young age, and Fischbach was immediately hooked, although he first expressed a serious interest in video gaming after being introduced to a Super Nintendo Entertainment System that Tom received for Christmas.

After a time, Fischbach's parents began conflicting, and were eventually divorced; according to Fischbach, "my parents fought a lot; and by fought a lot, I mean my Mom fought a lot, and my Dad had to reciprocate." Fischbach has stated that he was not as saddened by the divorce as he was by his father having "caved in."

Until the divorce, Fischbach had attended a private school, but was forced to begin attending public school after his father could no longer afford the tuition. One of his biggest problems through the transition was that he did not understand the concept of a locker.

While attending public school, Fischbach fell off of a set of monkey bars and broke his arm. Fischbach attributes this incident to meeting his first friends in public school, including a boy named Drew, who introduced him to the school's band program.

Fischbach's father later met a woman named Dee, who got on his good side by giving him a 2, but who he grew fond of for making his father happy. Fischbach attributes Dee's appearance in his life to enabling him to finish High School and make a large number of friends.

However, shortly after he graduated from High School, Fischbach's father was diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer; one year later, he died at home. After his father died, Fischbach became undecided on a profession; until that point, he had intended to go into Biomedical Engineering.

Fischbach temporarily entered into a dedicated relationship, which his biological mother firmly disapproved of, but which was later broken off after he was fired from a temporary position. Fischbach shortly reconciled with his mother.

Fischbach was stricken by a pain in his side shortly thereafter, which progressively grew worse until he woke one day and could no longer bear it; he was admitted to a hospital, where the pain was identified as his appendix being "about the size of a beach ball." He was also informed of a tumorous growth "the size of a fist" in his adrenal gland, which he was told did not have to be removed at the time.

After he was released from the hospital, Fischbach used his tax return to purchase a camera, which he did not often use; he rededicated himself to improving his studies in Biomedical Engineering, and it was around this time that he started a YouTube channel under the name Markiplier.

Career
Internet videos
Fischbach first joined YouTube on May 26, 2012, creating a channel under the name of markiplier. Fischbach's first uploaded video, titled "Amnesia Reaction Compilation", consists of Fischbach's reactions while commentating on the horror video game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. As of June 2014, the video has garnered over 597,850 views. Since then, Fischbach has renamed his channel to markiplierGAME, but recently decided to rename it again to simply Markiplier. Since then he has diversified the subjects of his commentaries.

Prominent video game commentaries
Slender: The Eight Pages
Some of Fischbach's most popular videos are those of his Slender: The Eight Pages gameplay commentaries. He has covered many various Slender variations, including Prison, Claustrophobia, Hospice, 7th Street, Mansion, and more. After multiple attempts, he dedicated a few of his videos to a serious playthrough of Slender: Haunt, which he eventually completed. He has yet to complete the original Slender: The Eight Pages, Slender: The Arrivals bonus level, Carnival, or Christmas Special, the last of which he once said is truly horrifying in its own way, while also "destroying his childhood".

Drunk Minecraft
Fischbach’s first episode of Drunk Minecraft was uploaded to his channel on the 8th of August, 2012, and rapidly became a fan favorite, as well as his most extensive series. The series is mainly centered around Fischbach, along with his two friends Bob "muyskerm" and Wade "Lordminion777", playing Minecraft while intoxicated. Its first season consisted of 32 episodes, and ran until early December 2012. After multiple requests, Fischbach uploaded the first episode of its second season on the 21st of March 2013. During the run of the second season, Fischbach, Bob & Wade added objectives to complete competitively, in order to become the "winner" of the episode. It has not been announced how long the second season will run for; however, Fischbach revealed during a Q&A session that Drunk Minecraft would be interrupted, as Drunk Minecraft member, Bob, moved away with the intention of finishing law school. The series returned on October 27, 2013, with an episode titled "DON'T KILL THE CHICKEN." It has since stopped being identified numerically (with older season 2 episodes losing their numbers in their titles).

Amnesia series
Often citing Amnesia: The Dark Descent as a truly terrifying game, Fischbach has dedicated many of his videos to gameplay commentary of both Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and customized stories made for the game.

So far, his most acclaimed custom story playthroughs are of The Things in the Night and The Great Work, as well as the game's official sequel, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

SCP - Containment Breach
Fischbach's SCP - Containment Breach playthrough is easily one of his most extensive; as of December 2013, he has uploaded 47 episodes, combined with modded variations. These modded variations include a Slender mod, as well as one dedicated to My Little Pony. He has also played a fan-made mod of the game, with which all in-game textures, sound effects, and audio tracks had been replaced with references to Fischbach's channel. After the release of version 0.7.1, Fischbach resumed filming gameplay videos of SCP - Containment Breach. He had previously stated that SCP had given him difficulty focusing, and scared him more than most horror video games he had played. After another halt, Fischbach resumed again, with the release of version 0.8 and 0.9.

Indie horror games
Fischbach has played various indie horror games, having dedicated an entire playlist to them. He often takes suggestions from his subscribers, as well as finding them out himself.

Though he has received requests to play games built using RPG Maker, such as Ib or Mad Father, he has stated that he feels that such games are "silly, and aren't really his style". However, due to positive comments and reviews of the role-playing game, The Witch's House, Fischbach decided to begin a playthrough. Since The Witch's House, Fischbach has played Paranoiac, Mad Father, and Ib; and has asked his subscribers for more suggestions.

Collaborations
In addition to his own commentary videos, Fischbach has worked together with a wide range of other YouTube personalities, collaborating on commentaries. At first, he began collaborating with fellow video game commentator and Let's Player, Yamimash, playing multiple Garry's Mod custom horror maps and an indie game called Slendytubbies. He has also collaborated with YouTubers Mangaminx and CinnamonToastKen, playing Castle Crashers, a 2D beat 'em up video game.

He has also played Trouble in Terrorist Town and Prop Hunt, both Garry's Mod custom gamemodes, with YouTubers Mangaminx, Cryaotic, Pewdiepie, SeaNanners, CaptainSparklez, Yamimash, and Wade and Bob from Drunk Minecraft.

Fischbach has also collaborated with YouTube sketch comedy duo Cyndago to produce multiple skits; most notable are "The Warfstache Affair", "The Opinion Minions", and "Danger in Fiction".

In 2014, Fischbach provided narration for an episode of the video game webseries Did You Know Gaming? covering the game Team Fortress 2.

Charity work
Fischbach has hosted numerous charity livestreams on Twitch, a livestreaming video platform. Over the course of 2012-2013, Fischbach has raised and donated $8,000 towards the Cancer Research Foundation, and $4,000 towards Living Beyond Breast Cancer, as well as many other non-livestream charity drives. During his most recent livestream event, held on May 18, 2013, Fischbach and his community were able to raise over $20,000 for the American Cancer Society charity in under 9 hours. In total, Fischbach, with the continuous support of his subscribers, has raised $289,150.74.

Other work
Fischbach also provides voiceovers for various episodes of the YouTube channel LORE, and is a member of The Game Station, now re-branded as Polaris.
