The '''High Capacity Metro Train''' ('''HCMT''') is a type of [[electric multiple unit]] (EMU) train for use by [[Metro Trains Melbourne]] on the [[Melbourne rail network]]. The first train set entered service on 27 December 2020 and will become the primary rolling stock used in the [[Metro Tunnel]] when it opens in 2025. The HCMTs carry around 1,400 passengers in seven carriages, running on Melbourne's {{1,500 V DC}} [[overhead line|overhead catenary]] system, and are currently the most advanced trains in the Metro Trains fleet. A consortium of investors and rail companies are constructing the trains in China and Australia via a contract with the [[Victorian Government]], in addition to upgrade works necessary for the operation of the trains.

== History ==
=== Background ===
The previous major procurement of rolling stock for the [[Railways in Melbourne|Melbourne rail network]] occurred in 2002, when franchisees [[M-Train|M>Train]] and [[Connex Melbourne|Connex]] ordered 62 [[Siemens Nexas]] and 58 [[X'Trapolis 100]] trains respectively, as part of their franchise agreements to replace the older [[Hitachi (Australian train)|Hitachi trains]].<ref name="Siemens PR">{{cite web|title=Siemens Transportation Systems wins major contract in Australia|url=http://www.siemens.com/page/1,3771,226112-1-18_0_0-0,00.html|website=Siemens Transportation Systems|publisher=Siemens AG|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20051122043434/http://www.siemens.com/page/1,3771,226112-1-18_0_0-0,00.html|archive-date=22 November 2005|location=Munich|date=1 April 2000}}</ref><ref name="DPC PR 2002">{{cite web|title=X'Trapolis Welcomed To Melbourne's Railways|url=http://www.dpc.vic.gov.au/domino/Web_Notes/newmedia.nsf/798c8b072d117a01ca256c8c0019bb01/11f92c2160b6c533ca256c93007bbcaf?OpenDocument|website=Media Release from the Minister for Public Transport|publisher=Department of Premier and Cabinet|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050717164206/http://www.dpc.vic.gov.au/domino/Web_Notes/newmedia.nsf/798c8b072d117a01ca256c8c0019bb01/11f92c2160b6c533ca256c93007bbcaf?OpenDocument|archive-date=17 July 2005|date=18 December 2002}}</ref> However, the Siemens units suffered major braking issues over the following decade, causing their repeated withdrawal from service;<ref name="Age Jan 2010">{{cite news|last1=Sexton|first1=Reid|title=Siemens trains the biggest cause of rail delays|url=http://www.theage.com.au/national/siemens-trains-the-biggest-cause-of-rail-delays-20100130-n5jo.html|access-date=30 November 2017|work=The Age|date=31 January 2010}}</ref> when the [[Government of Victoria|State Government]] tendered for 18 further six-carriage trains in 2007, it restricted bids to the previous two models ordered and awarded the contract to Alstom.<ref name="DPC PR 2007">{{cite web|title=18 More Trains Ordered For Metropolitan Rail System|url=http://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/domino/Web_Notes/newmedia.nsf/bc348d5912436a9cca256cfc0082d800/7180e6f43c8354ecca2573ba0080658e!OpenDocument|website=Media Release from the Minister for Public Transport|publisher=Department of Premier and Cabinet|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091019174552/http://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/domino/Web_Notes/newmedia.nsf/bc348d5912436a9cca256cfc0082d800/7180e6f43c8354ecca2573ba0080658e!OpenDocument|archive-date=19 October 2009|date=21 December 2007}}</ref> Several further orders were placed for X'Trapolis trains over the next 10 years.

The Public Transport Development Authority (later branded as [[Public Transport Victoria]]) was created in 2011 by the newly-elected state government of Premier [[Ted Baillieu]] with the intent of, among other things, running major studies into the operation of the metropolitan rail network.<ref name="Age PTV creation">{{cite news|last1=Lucas|first1=Clay|title=Comeback for Kennett-era transport chief|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/comeback-for-kennettera-transport-chief-20110823-1j8hu.html|access-date=29 November 2017|work=The Age|date=24 August 2011}}</ref> The [[Network Development Plan Metropolitan Rail]] (NDPMR), released publicly in early 2013 in the partial fulfillment of this objective, was designed as a series of concrete proposals for the expansion and consolidation of the rail network over the following 20 years.<ref name="Age NDPMR">{{cite news|last1=Gough|first1=Deborah|title=Major rail projects expected in 20 years|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/major-rail-projects-expected-in-20-years-20130326-2gt8r.html|access-date=29 November 2017|work=The Age|date=27 March 2013}}</ref> The NDPMR's first stage, intended to be completed before 2016, acknowledged the need for an interim solution of several more X'Trapolis trains to overcome major constraints,{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=7}} as well as recommending the internal reconfiguration of Siemens and [[Comeng (train)|Comeng]] trains to increase capacity,{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=72}} but identified the provision of new rolling stock as critical to the cost-effective use of existing railway infrastructure.{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=34}}

Among the deficiencies of existing rolling stock noted by the NDPMR were "multi-purpose" designs intended to strike a balance between [[commuter rail]] and [[rapid transit|metro]] operations, and the failure of existing trains to use the entire length of metropolitan [[railway platform|platforms]].{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=34}} The NDPMR rejected [[Bilevel rail car|double-decker trains]] on the basis that they would increase [[Dwell time (transportation)|dwell time]] at crowded stations, and argued that 220 metre trains, formed by operating the existing three car sets as nine car trains, would require extensive and prohibitively expensive infrastructure works, particularly in the [[City Loop]]. Instead, it recommended the procurement of single-level trains with a fixed number of cars, increased standing room and a length of {{convert|153|m|ft}}, with the capacity for expansion to {{cvt|220|m|ft}} upon the opening of the [[Metro Tunnel]]. The NDPMR envisaged these trains with a maximum capacity of 1,100 and 1,600 passengers respectively.{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=35}}

The NDPMR envisaged that these high-capacity trains would completely replace the Comeng fleet by 2032, and be used primarily on the [[Sunshine railway station, Melbourne|Sunshine]]–[[Dandenong railway station|Dandenong]] line created by the Metro Tunnel. Furthermore, it identified the need for the new trains to include [[cab signalling]] to reduce the [[headway]] required between trains, and for the construction of new maintenance facilities at several points on the network.{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=137}}

Prior to the [[2014 Victorian election]], then-Premier [[Denis Napthine]] promised an order of 25 of the proposed high-capacity trains if his incumbent [[Liberal-National Coalition]] government was returned for a second term.<ref name="Age Mar 2014">{{cite news|last1=Dowling|first1=Jason|title=Transport boost with 25 new trains for Cranbourne, Pakenham lines|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/transport-boost-with-25-new-trains-for-cranbourne-pakenham-lines-20140306-3492j.html|access-date=7 December 2017|work=The Age|date=6 March 2014}}</ref>
The HCMT are based on the Type A design used by CRRC Changchun.<ref name="RG Nov 2017" /> The trains will have seven carriages initially, with a total passenger capacity of 1,380.{{sfn|DEDJTR|2017|p=9}} However, provision will be made for the trains to be extended to 10 carriages for a capacity of more than 1,970.<ref name="Age May 2017">{{cite news|last1=Carey|first1=Adam|title=2000 people per train: Metro's standing room-only future revealed|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/2000-people-per-train-metros-standing-roomonly-future-revealed-20170528-gwettp.html|access-date=30 November 2017|work=The Age|date=29 May 2017}}</ref> An [[Aerodynamics|aerodynamic]] nose cone and retractable cover for the [[Coupler (railroad)|couplers]] at each end of the trains has been designed to reduce the incidence of [[train surfing]] when the HCMTs are in operation.<ref name="9News Aug 2017">{{cite news|last1=Lund|first1=Andrew|title=New high-capacity trains to curb dangerous train surfing in Melbourne|url=https://www.9news.com.au/national/2017/08/28/20/53/victoria-introduces-new-metro-trains|access-date=7 December 2017|work=9 News|date=28 August 2017}}</ref>
Approximately 30–40% of passengers will be seated when the train is at full capacity. The standing areas of the train will offer multiple types of straps and handles for the safety of standing passengers, and wide doors for rapid ingress and egress from these areas. As well as 70 [[Passenger information display system|passenger information displays]] (PIDs) in each train, [[Wi-Fi]] connection will be available throughout the passenger areas.<ref name="Broadsheet May 2017">{{cite news|last1=Tan|first1=Steffanie|title=65 New High-Capacity Trains Will be Added to the Melbourne Network|url=https://www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne/city-file/standing-only-future-metro-trains|access-date=19 April 2018|work=Broadsheet|date=29 May 2017|language=en}}</ref> The PIDs will show the next station, current time, and the train's location on an adapted rail map.
A number of semi-automated features will be implemented in the HCMT design, including the capacity for low-speed [[Shunting (rail)|shunting]] by remote control and for trains to be started without a driver present. The trains will also automatically estimate the passenger load, and the reading can be accessed remotely.<ref name="Age May 2017" /> Furthermore, the HCMTs will include "stopping aids" to maximize accuracy of the position of train's arrival at platforms.
Drivers will also have the capacity to open individual doors on the trains.{{sfn|DEDJTR|2017|p=13}}
The '''Tongan castaways''' were a group of six boys aged between 13 and 16: Luke Veikoso, Fatai Latu, Sione Fataua, Tevita Siola'a, Kolo Fekitoa, and Mano Totau. In 1965 the boys ran away from a boarding school on the island of [[Tonga]], stole a boat, and after a storm wrecked the boat, drifted to the abandoned, remote island of [[{{okina}}Ata|{{okina}}Ata]] where they were shipwrecked for 15 months.

==Cast away==
The boys formed a strong bond and, despite deprivations and injuries, kept themselves fit and healthy for the 15 months they were there.

They fed on local wild birds, fish, wild [[taro]]. They captured feral chickens, and found bananas that remained from being raised and cultivated on the island before it was evacuated 100 years prior.{{efn|After a slave raid by a whaler-turned-brigand, surviviors on {{okina}}Ata had been evacuated to the inner part of the Kingdom of [[Tonga]].}} They captured rainwater using hollowed out logs, though it was sparse during the initial months of their survival. == Odd interaction on Wikisource ==

Sometimes, if I have the tool in use on English Wikisource, it 'bounces' the main page header template on a page like this [[s:Broadcasting_Act_1981_(United_Kingdom)/Schedule9]] to the end of the page. I can't obviously find an error in the markup from the relevant pages, so I'm open to suggestions as to where the parser/render engine is getting confused.

Perhaps you are able to provide a better explanation? as it's making the tool harder to work with on Wikisource. [[Benutzer:ShakespeareFan00|ShakespeareFan00]] ([[Benutzer Diskussion:ShakespeareFan00|Diskussion]]) 02:00, 11. Jun. 2018 (CEST)

: English Wikisource is running gadgets to create a “dynamicLayout”.
:* Something is going wrong, and something is obviously grasping one of the first elements on page content and “bouncing” this element to the end, probably footer section.
:* The gadgets I flipped through looked correctly. They should put their hands on the element marked with
id="headerContainer"
etc., and if they do so they fetch the correct one and perform their job without influence.
:* However, I could observe one case, obviously a [[:en:race condition]] (“sometimes”), that behaved as you describe: The heading block in green was cut off at top and inserted as footer dynamically and in slow motion.
:* I do suspect [[s:en:MediaWiki:PageNumbers.js]] or [[s:en:MediaWiki:Gadget-PageNumbers-core.js]] even when they access the ''headerContainer'' correctly, but they might fail on playing with page numbers.
:* [[s:en:MediaWiki:DisplayFooter.js]] and [[s:en:MediaWiki:DisplayFooter2.js]] are inserting new elements as footer and innocent, since they don’t cut off elements from the head region.
:* Anyway, some of your gadgets is counting elements from top, and since ''lintHint'' will insert two
<div>
these unexpected elements are disturbing when cutting off the third element and inserting as footer. They must not count the third from top but the second neighbour or child of the one identified as
headerContainer
.
:* All scripts I have seen were rather old in ''DOM'' technology for core functionality; perhaps migration to modern ''jquery'' and considering more interaction nowadays might make that more robust.
: Please discuss with your JavaScript maintainers.
: You might turn off [[s:en:MediaWiki:Gadget-dynamicLayoutOverrides.js]] preference. No idea how that will influence.
== Options conflict with Sonderzeichenauswahl (editMenus) gadget ==

Hi PerfektesChaos,

I installed lintHint in my common.js on de:Wp, but when I went to the options page, either directly to [//de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Leerseite/preferencesGadgetOptions?uselang=de#lintHint Spezial:Leerseite/preferencesGadgetOptions#lintHint] or by clicking the cogwheels button at [[Spezial:Leerseite/lintHint]], I got the wrong options: only options for editMenus, but no options for lintHint.

I fixed it by [[Wikipedia:Technik/Skin/Gadgets/editMenus#Deaktivierung|inactivating the gadget]] "'''Sonderzeichenauswahl''' usw. unter dem Quelltext-Bearbeitungsfeld" in [[Spezial:Einstellungen#mw-prefsection-gadgets|the Preferences Gadgets section]]. The lintHint options appear for me only when that gadget is turned off. --[[Benutzer:Pipetricker|Pipetricker]] ([[Benutzer Diskussion:Pipetricker|diskussion]]) 11:47, 13. Feb. 2019 (CET)

: {{ping|Pipetricker}} First, thank you for fixing the links after section migration.
: Second, I cannot reproduce the situation, but I do believe in your report. Thx again for informing me.
:* I checked whether there might be a C&P error anywhere; more than a dozen of gadgets are equipped with such customization support, and the wrong ID might have been left somewhere.
:* I guess it is something like a race condition, or event communication.
:* There are a lot of tricky things done, a waiting queue for requests before the HTML document (DOM) is available to be equipped, and identifying particular user options for the gadgets, also waiting for that.
:* The window.location.hash is evaluated as well under some conditions; I should clear the hash now.
:* I will track all events and possible leaks for undesired interaction, but that might need some days (or nights).
: After the code has been updated I will inform you and kindly ask for testing, since it is all okay for me.
Zugegebenermaßen wird tatsächlich der Fehler während der Bearbeitung (über Linthint, wenn ich den Quelltext hierher kopiere) nicht angezeigt, was aber daran liegen mag, dass
<nowiki>{{{bestscorer1|}}}</nowiki>
leer ist. I have told you everything already.
* The tool in question is reporting database entries in view mode.
* There is a known lag of updating database records. Therefore this tool is reporting false positves, but I cannot help that.
* In edit mode the current source code is transferred to server. The tool will report the answer. I cannot do anything else.
* This tool is not causing your problems.
:Greetings to you as well. I am skeptical of the theory that the problem is simply a lag of updating database records. Consider [[:en:Help talk:Citation Style 1/Archive 2]]. The [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Help_talk:Citation_Style_1/Archive_2&action=info Information page] reports:
::Misnested tag with different rendering in HTML5 and HTML4: 1
::Stripped tags: 1
:The page history shows that I edited this page 23:48, 19 June 2018, and I remember that before I saved it, I got a "green light" from lintHint. But the errors remained on the information page, so I edited it again 9:30, 20 June 2018, and again before I saved it, I got a "green light" from lintHint. And 427 days later, it still has a "green light" when editing, and it still has errors on the information page. A delay of 427 days is not a "lag" — it is "never going to happen"! Similarly, some of the items listed above have persisted for more than 2 months with errors outside the editor that lintHint does not see. For example, I edited [[:en:File:37th Hong Kong Film Awards.jpg]] 71 days ago. Do you really thing this is just a "known lag"? I agree with you that lintHint is doing what it's supposed to do, but something is not doing what it's supposed to do. --[[Benutzer:Anomalocaris|Anomalocaris]] ([[Benutzer Diskussion:Anomalocaris|Diskussion]]) 08:37, 22. :::I tested the theory that the problem is a stuck database and did an experiment. I blanked [[:en:File:National Library IL.png]] and the stripped tag went away; I undid my edit and the stripped tag came back. So the problem isn't a stuck database.
* Langsam angehen.
* Es gibt den Plan, wegen der entstandenen einwöchigen Lücke in der Datenbank die Datenbanken aller Wikis einmal komplett zu leeren und danach für jede Seite wieder neu zu analysieren und die Datenbank neu aufzubauen.
* Das würde einige nicht verschwindende Karteileichen zu nicht mehr existierenden Konstellationen endlich tilgen.
* Optimisten meinen, sowas würde eine Woche dauern.
* Ich würde dieses Jahr keine systematischen Linter-Analysen des Altbestands mehr einplanen.
{{ping|ShakespeareFan00}} Might have been solved for now.
* Not very robust yet.
* Do not make big schedules this year.
* It is considered to empty the database and get rid of orphan entries soon. Might take a while to fill again by reparsing all pages on all wikis.
* There would be a gap of one week otherwise in database.
For several weeks now, lintHint pointers have often been off. For example, editing [[:en:Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard/Archive109]], lintHint detects 47 errors.
* The first error is an obsolete <font> tag, and clicking on the down-arrow highlights text 10 characters after the actual <font> tag.
* The last error is an obsolete <font> tag, and clicking on the down-arrow highlights text about 152 characters after the actual <font> tag.
: Thanks – yes, it has been noticed already that the numbers are not precise any longer.
: With beginning of December 2019 the executing parser system has been shifted from Parsoid/JS to Parsoid/PHP.
: I guess this is the reason.
: Currently the API answers are temporarily or for some wikis completely discarded due to server overload – see section above.
: It is hoped that within January 2020 there will be a robust solution regarding servers.
: For now partially Parsoid/JS and partially Parsoid/PHP are both producing answers and pointers.
== Callback function after table is displayed? ==

Hello. I have started using lintHint.js and I do not wish to see "Obselete HTML tags" warning. Can you please add an option to suppress that? Currently, I am using
[...document.getElementsByTagName('td')].filter(el => el.innerText == "Obsolete HTML tags").forEach(el => el.parentElement.remove())
.
[[Benutzer:Acagastya|Acagastya]] ([[Benutzer Diskussion:Acagastya|Diskussion]]) 21:42, 9.
: This is the first request for such option after three years of lintHint.
: I am happy that you found a solution to help yourself for now.
: I will change the code and introduce a class derived from category ID for each table row. That would make it easier to suppress something via CSS rule.
: Dissemination and testing might take longer ages. I am quite overburdened.
: Basically the hints generated by lintHint are not made to be suppressed. And even obsolete tags or “minor priority” categories need to be eliminated in the long run. Only
<tt>
might become a MediaWiki tag like
<pre>
one day.
: Introduction of a user option is out of scope.
display:none
also alles was in diesem div steht: <syntaxhighlight lang="html">
…
</syntaxhighlight>
** Da ist dann auch lintHint verborgen und fragmentAnchors wohl auch
** selbst wenn man eine kleine Änderung machen würde und auf {{Taste|Änderungen veröffentlichen}} und dann {{Taste|Vorschau}} klickt, ist die Schaltfläche verborgen, obwohl dann ja eine Leseansicht in der Vorschau angezeigt wird und nicht Quelltext.
** In der normalen Leseansicht steht lintHhint in diesem div <syntaxhighlight lang="html">
…
</syntaxhighlight> und ist sichtbar. Daran schließt sich dann
mw-parser-output
an. Vermutlich müsstest du den Abschnitt für den Button wohl zwischen
id="firstHeading" class="firstHeading .ve-activated .ve-init-mw-desktopArticleTarget-uneditableContent" lang="de"
und
id="bodyContent" class="mw-body-content"
; Version -4.3
<syntaxhighlight lang="css">
.mw-body-content {
position: relative; -- gestrichen
z-index: 0; -- gestrichen
}
</syntaxhighlight>
Und die Regel, von wo ich es kopiert habe lautet wie oben bereits eingefügt komplett so
<syntaxhighlight lang="css" highlight="7">
.ve-loading #content > :not(.ve-init-mw-desktopArticleTarget-loading-overlay), .ve-activated .ve-init-mw-desktopArticleTarget-uneditableContent {
-ms-user-select: none; -- gestrichen
user-select: none;
opacity: 0.5;
}
</syntaxhighlight>
Die ist ohne
index
Und irgendwo gibt es noch eine Regel mit
<syntaxhighlight lang="css">
.oo-ui-defaultOverlay, .skin-vector .oo-ui-windowManager-modal > .oo-ui-dialog, .skin-vector .ve-ui-overlay-global {
z-index: 101;
}
</syntaxhighlight>
Mehr finde ich nicht. Der Button hat zwar
opacity : 1
<nowiki>

</nowiki>
(also in der Nebenbox zum umschalten) es scheint irgendwie eine vererbte Eigenschaft des Titels zu sein denn es steht auch in
<nowiki>
Seitentitel
</nowiki>
<nowiki></nowiki>
Element auf, was auch immer das ist. Dann setzt es sich fort bis der Bereich zu einem div mit der id
<nowiki>div.ve-init-mw-desktopArticleTarget-uneditableContent:nth-child(8)</nowiki>
Das hat folgenden Inhalt:
<syntaxhighlight lang="text">
</syntaxhighlight>
== Why doesn't it detect this missing table close? ==
Hi. First, thanks for this great tool!

I noticed today that it finds no error in [[:en:Special:PermaLink/980597500]], yet the article is missing a table-closing at the end of the table in the Confederations section. : I do think the missing of a table close
|}
is not in every case an lintError for the software. So the tool can’t find it. This is something I often aked me why the software can find missing tag like div, small, span, italic or bold, but not a missing end of a table. In your example the following content is interpreted as content of the table itself. The missing of the table ending should be found by the software, than lintHint will find it too. --Liebe Grüße, [[Benutzerin:Lómelinde|Lómelinde]] [[Benutzerin Diskussion:Lómelinde#top|Diskussion]] 06:41, 28. :: I'm afraid what you're saying appears to be contradictory. Yes, lintHint routinely finds tables that are opened but not closed, as it does with div, italic, etc. markup. This is fairly straightforward to do, which is why I wonder why it fails in this case (and no others that I've seen). —[[[:w:User:AlanM1|AlanM1]]([[:w:User talk:AlanM1#top|talk]])]— 13:08, 28. : Well, intentionally there is no such automatism rather than
launch
described [[:en:User:PerfektesChaos/js/lintHint #par.launch|here]].
: I do hesitate a bit to make some interface in the way as you describe it, since it might cause server overload when requested after each modification of each page, in each preview and for each diff. The idea is to force the user demanding such analysis manually. Editing a page might occur in many steps, and not every step will need linter.
: There is an automatic analysis offered by configuration, but only on page view.
The '''High Capacity Metro Trains''' are a fleet of [[electric multiple unit]] (EMU) trains on order for use by [[Metro Trains Melbourne]] on the [[Melbourne rail network]]. They are due to enter service in late 2020 and will eventually become the primary rollingstock used in the [[Melbourne Metro Rail Project|Metro Rail Tunnel]] when it opens in 2025. The HCMTs will carry around 1400 passengers in seven carriages, running on Melbourne's 1500 [[Volt|V]] [[Direct current|DC]] [[overhead catenary]] system, and will be the most advanced trains in the Metro Trains fleet when they are introduced. A consortium of investors and rail companies is constructing the trains in China and Australia via a contract with the [[Victorian Government]], in addition to upgrade works necessary for the operation of the trains.
The Public Transport Development Authority (later branded as [[Public Transport Victoria]] or PTV) was created in 2011 by the state government under Premier [[Ted Baillieu]] with the intent of, among other things, running major studies into the operation of the metropolitan rail network.<ref name="Age PTV creation">{{cite news|last1=Lucas|first1=Clay|title=Comeback for Kennett-era transport chief|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/comeback-for-kennettera-transport-chief-20110823-1j8hu.html|accessdate=29 November 2017|work=The Age|date=24 August 2011}}</ref> The [[Network Development Plan Metropolitan Rail]], released publicly in early 2013 in the partial fulfilment of this objective, was designed as a series of concrete proposals for the expansion and consolidation of the rail network over the following 20 years.<ref name="Age NDPMR">{{cite news|last1=Gough|first1=Deborah|title=Major rail projects expected in 20 years|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/major-rail-projects-expected-in-20-years-20130326-2gt8r.html|accessdate=29 November 2017|work=The Age|date=27 March 2013}}</ref> The NDPMR's first stage, intended to be completed before 2016, acknowledged the need for an interim solution of several more X'Trapolis trains to overcome major constraints,{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=7}} as well as recommending the internal reconfiguration of Siemens and [[Comeng (train)|Comeng]] trains to increase capacity,{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=72}} but identified the provision of new rollingstock as critical to the cost-effective use of existing railway infrastructure.{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=34}}

Among the deficiencies of existing rollingstock noted by the NDPMR were "multi-purpose" designs intended to strike a balance between [[commuter rail]] and [[rapid transit|metro]] operations, and the failure of existing trains to use the entire length of metropolitan [[railway platform|platforms]].{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=34}} The NDPMR rejected [[Bilevel rail car|double-deck trains]] on the basis that they would increase [[Dwell time (transportation)|dwell time]] at crowded stations, and argued that 220-metre trains, formed by operating the existing 3-car sets as 9-car trains, would require extensive and prohibitively expensive infrastructure works, particularly in the [[City Loop]]. Instead, it recommended the procurement of single-level trains with a fixed number of cars, increased standing room and a length of {{convert|153|m|ft}}, with the capacity for expansion to {{cvt|220|m|ft}} upon the opening of the [[Melbourne Metro Rail Project|Melbourne Metro tunnel]]. The NDPMR envisaged these trains with a maximum capacity of 1100 and 1600 passengers respectively.{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=35}}

The NDPMR envisaged that these high-capacity trains would completely replace the Comeng fleet by 2032, and be used primarily on the [[Sunshine railway station, Melbourne|Sunshine]]–[[Dandenong railway station|Dandenong]] line created by the Melbourne Metro. Furthermore, it identified the need for the new trains to include [[cab signalling]] to reduce the [[headway]] required between trains, and for the construction of new maintenance facilities at several points on the network.{{sfn|NDPMR|2012|p=137}}
'''Knaresborough Castle''' is a ruined fortress overlooking the [[River Nidd]] in the town of [[Knaresborough]], [[North Yorkshire]], England.

==History==
The castle was first built by a [[Normans|Norman]] baron in c.1100 on a cliff above the River Nidd. There is documentary evidence dating from 1130 referring to works carried out at the castle by [[Henry I of England|Henry I]].<ref>http://www.knaresborough.co.uk/history/town.asp</ref> In the 1170s [[Hugh de Morville, Lord of Westmorland|Hugh de Moreville]] and his followers took refuge there after assassinating [[Thomas Becket]].

In 1205 [[John of England|King John]] took control of Knareborough Castle.<ref>{{harvnb|Brown|1959|p=256}}</ref> He regarded Knaresborough as an important northern fortress and spent £1,290 on improvements to the castle.{{Citation needed|date=August 2011}} The castle was later rebuilt at a cost of £2,174 between 1307 and 1312 by [[Edward I of England|Edward I]] and later completed by [[Edward II of England|Edward II]], including the great [[keep]].<ref>{{harvnb|King|1983|pp=520, 537}}</ref> [[John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster|John of Gaunt]] acquired the castle in 1372, adding it to the vast holdings of the [[Duchy of Lancaster]].

The castle was taken by [[Roundhead|Parliamentarian]] troops in 1644 during the [[English Civil War|Civil War]], and largely destroyed in 1648 not as the result of warfare, but because of an order from [[Parliament of England|Parliament]] to dismantle all [[Cavalier|Royalist]] castles. Indeed, many town centre buildings are built of 'castle stone'.

The remains are open to the public and there is a charge for entry to the interior remains. The grounds are used as a public leisure space, with a [[bowling green]] and [[Golf course#Putting green|putting green]] open during summer. It is also used as a performing space, with bands playing most afternoons through the summer. It plays host to frequent events, such as FEVA.<ref>[http://www.feva.info/ FEVA]</ref> The property is owned by the monarch as part of the Duchy of Lancaster holdings, but is administered by [[Harrogate (borough)|Harrogate Borough Council]].

==Description==
The castle, now much ruined, comprised two walled [[motte-and-bailey|baileys]] set one behind the other, with the outer bailey on the town side and the inner bailey on the cliff side. The enclosure wall was punctuated by solid towers along its length, and a pair, visible today, formed the main gate. At the junction between the inner and outer baileys, on the north side of the castle stood a tall five-sided [[keep]], the eastern parts of which has been pulled down. The keep had a [[Vault (architecture)|vaulted]] basement, at least three upper stories, and served as a residence for the lord of the castle throughout the castle's history. The castle baileys contained residential buildings, and some foundations have survived.

The upper storey of the Courthouse features a museum that includes furniture from the original [[Tudor dynasty|Tudor Court]], as well as exhibits about the castle and the town.<ref>http://www.knaresborough.co.uk/castle/</ref>
==Hurunui Water Project==
The Hurunui Water Project has applied to [[Environment Canterbury]], the [[Regions of New Zealand|regional council]] responsible for administering the river, for [[resource consent]]s to dam the river and to take water for irrigation. The proposed scheme involves a weir that will raise the level of Lake Sumner, a dam and lake on the south branch of the river and an intake on the main stem of the river.<ref>[http://ecan.govt.nz/get-involved/consent-projects/pages/hurunui-water-project.aspx Hurunui Water Project], Environment Canterbury website, 2009-08-13, retrieved 2009-10-16.</ref>
{{About|the concept of a canon that defines the world of a particular fictional series or franchise|influential works of fiction|literary canon}}

In [[fiction]], '''canon''' is the conceptual material accepted as "official" in a [[fictional universe]]'s fan base. It is often contrasted with, or used as the basis for, works of [[fan fiction]], which are considered to be non-canon. It is used in two slightly different meanings: 'First, "it refers to the overall set of storyline, premises, settings, and characters offered by the source media text".<ref>{{harvnb|Parrish|2007|p=28}}</ref> In this sense, canon is "the original work from which the fan fiction author borrows,"<ref>Meredith McCardle, [http://128.197.26.34/law/central/jd/organizations/journals/scitech/volume92/mccardle.pdf Fan Fiction, Fandom, and Fanfare: What's All the Fuss], p.3</ref> or "the original media on which the fan fictions are based."<ref>Rebecca Black, ''Digital Design: English Language Learners and Reader Reviews in Online Fiction'', in [http://www.soe.jcu.edu.au/sampler/ A New Literacies Sampler], p. 126</ref> Second, it is used "as a descriptor of specific incidents, relationships, or story arcs that take place within the overall canon"; thus certain incidents or relationships may be described as being canon or not.<ref>{{harvnb|Parrish|2007|p=32}}</ref> The alternative term '''mythology''' is often used, especially to refer either to a richly detailed fictional canon requiring a large degree of [[suspension of disbelief]] (e.g. an entire imaginary world and history), or to a central thread of storytelling running through a broad fictional canon that may episodically wander into many side plots with little connection to that thread.

The use of the word "canon" in reference to a set of texts derives from [[Biblical canon]], the set of books regarded as [[scripture]], and which are contrasted with non-canonical [[Apocrypha]].<ref>{{cite book |title=The Biblical Canon: Its Origin, Transmission and Authority |last=McDonald |first=Lee Martin |year=2007 |publisher=Hendrickson Publishers |location=[[Peabody, Massachusetts]] |isbn=978-1-56563-925-6 |edition=Updated and revised 3rd |page=38 |url=http://books.google.com/books?id=r9FUWj_w9-YC&lpg=PP1&dq=Biblical%20canon&pg=PA38#v=onepage&q&f=false |accessdate=30 April 2010}}</ref> The term was first used by analogy in the context of fiction to refer to the [[Canon of Sherlock Holmes|Sherlock Holmes stories and novels]], written by [[Arthur Conan Doyle|Sir Arthur Conan Doyle]], to distinguish those works from subsequent [[pastiche]]s by other authors by Ronald Knox in a 1911 essay "Studies in the Literature of Sherlock Holmes".<ref>Peter Haining, "Introduction" in {{cite book | last = Doyle | first = Arthur Conan | title = The Final Adventures of Sherlock Holmes | publisher = Barnes & Noble Books | location = New York | year = 1993 | isbn = 1-56619-198-X }} Edited by Peter Haining.</ref><ref name="wired">{{cite news |title=Meet Leland Chee, the Star Wars Franchise Continuity Cop |first=Chris |last=Baker |url=http://www.wired.com/entertainment/hollywood/magazine/16-09/ff_starwarscanon?currentPage=all |magazine=[[Wired (magazine)|Wired]] |date=18 August 2008 |accessdate=30 April 2010}}</ref> It has subsequently been applied to many [[media franchise]]s. Among these are [[science fiction]] franchises such as ''[[Star Trek]]'', ''[[Star Wars]]'', ''[[Halo series|Halo]]'', ''[[Fallout (series)|Fallout]]'', and ''[[Mass Effect]]'', in which many stories have been told in different media, some of which contradict or appear to contradict each other.<ref name="wired" /> In many comedy franchises canon is often contradictory, as plots are designed primarily for humor and only secondarily for consistency. {{Citation needed|date=April 2013}}

==Canonicity==
When there are multiple "official" works or original media, the question of what is and what is not canonical can be unclear. This is resolved either by explicitly excluding certain media from the status of canon (as in the case of ''Star Trek''), by assigning different levels of canonicity to different media (as in the case of ''Star Wars''), by considering different but licensed media treatments official within their own [[Continuity (fiction)|continuities]] but not across them (as with ''Battlestar Galactica'')<ref name="BW-SEPCON">{{cite web |url= http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Battlestar_Wiki:Separate_continuity |title=Separate Continuity |work=Battlestar Wiki |publisher=[[Wikia]] |date=6 October 2006 ''ff.'' |accessdate=1 July 2011}}</ref> or not resolved at all. This use of canon is of particular importance when it comes to reboots, or re-imaginings, of established franchises such as 2009 ''Star Trek,'' because of the ways in which it influences the viewer experience. <ref name="Urbanski, The Science Fiction Reboot">{{cite book|last=Urbanski|first=Heather|title=The Science Fiction Reboot: Canon, Innovation and Fandom in Refashioned Franchises|year=2013|publisher=McFarland|location=Jefferson, NC|isbn=978-0-7864-6509-5|url=http://www.mcfarlandbooks.com/book-2.php?id=978-0-7864-6509-5}}</ref>

The official ''Star Trek'' website describes [[Star Trek canon|''Star Trek'' canon]] as "the events that take place within the live-action episodes and movies" (that is, the television series [[Star Trek: The Original Series|''Star Trek'']], ''[[Star Trek: The Next Generation]]'', ''[[Star Trek: Deep Space Nine]]'', ''[[Star Trek: Voyager]]'', ''[[Star Trek: Enterprise]]'', and the [[List of Star Trek films|''Star Trek'' motion pictures]]).<ref name="trek">{{cite web |url=http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/help/faqs/faq/676.html |title=FAQ: Article |date=10 July 2003 |work=startrek.com |publisher=CBS Studios |accessdate=29 April 2010}}</ref> Events, characters and story lines from tie-in novels, comic books, video games and ''[[Star Trek: The Animated Series]]'' are explicitly excluded from the ''Star Trek'' canon, but the site notes that elements from these sources have been subsequently introduced into the television series, and says that "canon is not something set in stone."<ref name="trek" /> One example of a non-canonical element that later became canonical in the Star Trek universe was the name "Tiberius" becoming the official middle name of Enterprise captain [[James T. Kirk]]. The name was introduced in the ''Star Trek'' animated series, and was later added into the official biography of the character by its mention in the live-action film ''[[Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country]]''.

The [[Star Wars canon|''Star Wars'' canon]] exists on several levels. The highest level is the six ''Star Wars'' films, and statements by [[George Lucas]]; tie-in fiction from the [[Star Wars Expanded Universe|Expanded Universe]] has a different level of canonicity.<ref name="wired" /> The complex system is maintained by Leland Chee, a [[Lucasfilm]] employee.<ref name="wired" />
At the other extreme, the makers of ''[[Doctor Who]]'' have generally avoided making ''any'' pronouncements about canonicity, with writers such as [[Paul Cornell]], [[Russell T Davies]], and [[Steven Moffat]] explaining that no concept of canonicity exists for the Doctor Who TV series or its [[Doctor Who spin-offs|spin-offs]].<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.paulcornell.com/2007/02/canonicity-in-doctor-who.html |title=Canonicity in Doctor Who |last=Cornell |first=Paul |authorlink=Paul Cornell |date=10 February 2007 |work=PaulCornell.com |accessdate=30 April 2010}}</ref><ref>Doctor Who Magazine #388</ref><ref>Doctor Who Magazine #356</ref><ref>Davies RT, "The Writer's Tales"</ref><ref>[http://teatimebrutality.blogspot.com/2009/07/canon-and-sheep-shit-why-we-fight.html Canon and Sheep Shit: Why We Fight]</ref>

==Fanon==

[[Fan fiction]] is almost never regarded as canonical. However, certain ideas may become influential or widely accepted within fan communities, who refer to such ideas as "fanon", a [[portmanteau]] of ''fan'' and ''canon''.<ref name="wired" /><ref>{{harvnb|Parrish|2007|p=33}}: 'fanon.' Within an individual fandom, certain plotlines may be reinvented so many times and by so many people—or alternately may be written so persuasively by a few writers—that they take on the status of fan-produced canon.</ref>

Fanon is a common feature in large [[Media franchise|franchise]]s and [[fictional universe]]s where there are many canon and non-canon works, as in the [[Star Trek universe|''Star Trek'' universe]]. Sometimes, fanon comes from the acceptance of non-canonical explanations provided in [[expanded universe]] published works.{{cn|date=May 2013}}
{{Other people2|John Metcalf (disambiguation)}}
[[File:John Metcalf 1801.JPG|upright|right|thumb|John Metcalf, also known as Blind Jack of Knaresborough]]

'''John Metcalf''' (1717–1810), also known as '''Blind Jack of Knaresborough''' or '''Blind Jack Metcalf''', was the first professional road builder to emerge during the [[United Kingdom|British]] [[Industrial Revolution]].

Blind from the age of six, John had an eventful life, which was well documented by his own account just before his death. In the period 1765 to 1792 he built about {{convert|180|mi|km}} of [[turnpike trust|turnpike road]], mainly in the north of England.

==Early life==
John was born in [[Knaresborough]], in the [[England|English]] county of [[Yorkshire]], on 15 August 1717 into a poor family, the son of a horse breeder. At the age of six he lost his sight to a [[smallpox]] infection. The child was given [[fiddle]] lessons as a way of making provision for him to earn a living later in life. He became an accomplished fiddler and made this his livelihood in his early adult years. In 1732 Metcalf succeeded Morrison as fiddler at The Queen's Head ([[Harrogate]]) at the age of fifteen. Morrison had played there for the previous seventy years. Metcalf also had an affinity for horses and added to his living with some [[horse trading]]. Though blind, he took up swimming and diving, [[Cockfight|fighting cocks]], playing cards, riding and even hunting. He knew his local area so well he got paid to work as a guide to visitors.

In 1739 Jack befriended Dorothy Benson, the daughter of the landlord of the Granby inn in [[Harrogate]]. When at the age of 21 he made another woman pregnant, Dorothy begged him not to marry the woman and Jack fled. He then spent some time living along the North Sea Coast between Newcastle and London, including lodging with his aunt in Whitby. He continued to work as a fiddler. When he heard Dorothy was to be married to a shoemaker, Jack returned and eloped with her. They married and went on to have four children. Dorothy died in 1778.

His fiddle playing gave him social connections and a patron, Colonel Liddell. In one much-repeated story the colonel decided to take his young protégé to [[London]], {{convert|190|mi|km}} away to the south. John found the colonel’s leisurely progress too slow and went ahead on foot. He reached London first and then returned to Yorkshire before the colonel. He managed this though on foot and blind and the story demonstrates Jack's determination and resourcefulness.

During the [[Jacobite Rising|Second Jacobite rebellion]] of 1745 Jack’s connections got him the job of assistant to the [[recruiting sergeant]] who was raising a company for the King in the Knaresborough area. Jack went with the army to Scotland. He did not experience action but was employed moving guns over boggy ground. He was later captured but released.

After the war he used his Scottish experience to begin importing Aberdeen stockings to England.

==Carrier==
Before his army service Jack had tried his hand as a [[Common carrier|carrier]] using a four-wheeled chaise and a one-horse chair on local trips. When competition cut into this business he switched to carrying fish from the coast to Leeds and Manchester. After 1745 he bought a stone [[wagon]] and worked it between [[York]] and Knaresborough. By 1754 his business had grown to a [[stagecoach]] line. He drove a coach himself, making two trips a week during the summer and one a week in the winter months.

==Road builder==
In 1765 [[Parliament of Great Britain|Parliament]] passed an act authorising the creation of [[Turnpike trusts in the United Kingdom|turnpike trusts]] to build new [[toll (road usage)|toll]] funded roads in the Knaresborough area. There were few people around with road-building experience and John seized the opportunity, building on his practical experience as a carrier.

He won a contract to build a three-mile (5 km) section between [[Minskip]] and [[Ferrensby]] of a new road from [[Harrogate]] to [[Boroughbridge]]. He explored this section of countryside alone and worked out the most practical route.

Metcalf went on to build roads throughout [[Lancashire]], [[Derbyshire]], [[Cheshire]] and [[Yorkshire]], including roads between:

* [[Knaresborough]] and [[Wetherby]]
* [[Wakefield]], [[Huddersfield]] and [[Saddleworth]] (via the [[Standedge]] pass)
* [[Bury]] and [[Blackburn]] with a branch to [[Accrington]]
* [[Skipton]], [[Colne]] and [[Burnley]]

Metcalf believed that a good road should have good foundations, be well drained and have a smooth convex surface to allow rainwater to drain quickly into ditches at the side of the road. He understood the importance of good drainage, knowing it was rain that caused most of the problems on the roads.

He worked out a way to build a road across a bog using a series of rafts made from ling (a type of heather) and furze (gorse) tied in bundles as foundations. This established his reputation as a road builder since other engineers had believed it could not be done.

He acquired an unequalled mastery of his trade with his own accurate method of calculating costs and materials, which he could never successfully explain to others.

==Later life==
[[File:Spofforth Church Grounds.jpg|upright|right|thumb|All Saints Church grounds; Metcalf's final resting place.]]
Competition from canals eventually cut into his profits and he retired in 1792 to live with a daughter and her husband at [[Spofforth, North Yorkshire|Spofforth]] in Yorkshire. Throughout his career he built {{convert|180|mi|km}} of road. At 77 he walked to [[York]], where he related a detailed account of his life to a publisher.

Blind Jack of Knaresborough died in his 93rd year on 26 April 1810, at his home in Spofforth. He is buried in Spofforth churchyard.

==Memorials==
A statue of John Metcalf has been placed in the market square in Knaresborough, across from Blind Jack's pub.<ref>[http://www.bbc.co.uk/northyorkshire/content/articles/2008/07/24/blind_jack_feature.shtml BBC Website]</ref>

==Epitaph==
His tombstone erected in the churchyard of Spofforth, at the cost of Lord Dundas, bears this epitaph:

"Here lies John Metcalf, one whose infant sight

Felt the dark pressure of an endless night;

Yet such the fervour of his dauntless mind,

His limbs full strung, his spirits unconfined,

That, long ere yet life’s bolder years began,

The sightless efforts mark’d th’ aspiring man;

Nor mark’d in vain—high deeds his manhood dared,

And commerce, travel, both his ardour shared.

’Twas his a guide’s unerring aid to lend—

O’er trackless wastes to bid new roads extend;

And, when rebellion reared her giant size,

’Twas his to burn with patriot enterprise;

For parting wife and babes, a pang to feel,

Then welcome danger for his country’s weal.

Reader, like him, exert thy utmost talent given!

Reader, like him, adore the bounteous hand of Heaven."<ref>[http://www.gutenberg.org/files/39532/39532-h/39532-h.htm#Page_149]</ref>

:''This article is not about [[literary canon]]s of influential works of fiction, but about the concept of a canon which defines the world of a particular fictional series or franchise.''

'''Canon''', in the context of a [[fictional universe]], comprises those novels, stories, films, etc., that are considered to be genuine or officially sanctioned, and those events, characters, settings, etc., that are considered to have existence within the fictional universe. In order for a setting to appear cohesive, especially in fictions that contain multiple parts, both creators and audiences sometimes find it useful to define what has and has not "actually happened" in that universe.

Material that is considered canon usually comes from the original source or author of the fictional universe, while (some) [[spin-off]]s and adaptations to other media are more likely to be non-canon and [[fan fiction]] is almost always non-canon.
{{TOCright}}

==Origins==
The word "canon" originally meant the books which the [[Catholic Church]] officially chose to be included in the Bible; by extension, it means the authoritative "holy writ" of a fictional universe. However, the practice of defining a "canon" ''within'' a fictional world derived from the concept of a [[western canon|literary canon]], a specified collection of works considered to be both representative and the best of a particular form, [[genre]] or [[culture]]. In that more common use of the word, works forming a canon do not have to bear any relation to each other than their high quality or historical influence.

The use of "canon" to describe the degree to which a work adheres to the standards of its fictional world, appears to have originated amongst devotees of the [[Sherlock Holmes]] stories, as a way to distinguish between the original works of [[Arthur Conan Doyle]] and adaptations of those works or original works by other writers utilising related characters and settings. However, much of the interest in and controversy over issues of canonicity have appeared in recent decades in the [[Cult following|fan followings]] of films and television shows, such as [[science fiction]] [[Media franchise|franchises]] ''[[Star Wars]]'' and ''[[Star Trek]]''.

When the body of work nominally set in the same fictional universe becomes large enough, it can happen that new material, such as might be found in [[spin-off]] television shows, [[prequels]] and books, contradicts earlier material. Such contradictions may be a result of bad research, or an attempt to revise, correct or [[retcon]] a perceived error in earlier material. The question is which material to favour and which to ignore when attempting to resolve all the material into a consistent whole. Two simple approaches are the "principle of first mention" in which information in the original work provides a foundation which later material must respect, and the [[Historical revisionism|revisionist]] model in which the latest work always supersedes earlier material. However, the situation can be much more complicated.

==Nature of fictional canons==
{{Unreferencedsection|date=January 2008}}
Canonicity of fiction is a distinctly modern idea. In addition to the modern concepts of genre fiction and fictional universes, the notion of [[intellectual property]] (IP) distinguishes between "official" and "unofficial" sources of stories. However, whereas IP laws are designed to dictate where the revenue generated by a story goes, they do not confer the right to determine canonicity. If a fictional universe has an obvious primary creator then their statements may be held to carry the most authority, but no actual industry label exists for definitively designating published works as canonical, or even for granting any particular individual or organisation the power to dictate what is or is not canonical. Equally, the fact that a majority of fans of a fictional setting view certain things as non-canonical does not oblige everyone to agree.

Canonicity is, then, a largely subjective notion, referring to a shared understanding - if there is one - between the published works in a fictional series and the level of acceptance by a vocal but otherwise accepting wide audience. As such, the word canon can simultaneously refer to the considerations of the publishers of a fictional series as well as what the fanbase chooses to consider as authentic.

Generally, "[[Expanded Universe]]s" are not considered canonical; by analogy with the idea of a canon of [[Scripture]] (see [[Biblical canon]]), such stories are considered "[[apocrypha (fiction)|apocrypha]]l". However, there are exceptions. In the case of the [[Star Wars canon|''Star Wars'' canon]], the Expanded Universe is canonical, though open to interpretation in a way which the "gospel" of the films is not. ''[[Doctor Who]]'', which began life as a television series but has also been produced in prose, audio and graphical formats, has never had a single author or authority to pronounce on the issue of canon, and its fans run a spectrum between those who consider only the television series canonical and those who consider everything labelled as ''Doctor Who'' canonical.

In addition, a story can belong to two overlapping canons. One of the most obvious examples of this is [[Philip José Farmer]]'s [[Wold Newton family]]. Some (but not all) of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, [[Tarzan]], [[Doc Savage]], etc. are canonical in the Wold Newton setting. This does not mean that the events of Farmer's books are canonical from a Sherlockian perspective. Similarly, fans of [[Laurie R. King]]'s novels of [[Sherlock Holmes]] and [[Mary Russell]] consider all the Holmes stories to be canonical in King's setting.

The difference can be even less clear-cut than this. Current ''Star Trek'' novels maintain a tight continuity with each other, and avoid contradicting the television series. When a ''[[Star Trek: The Lost Era|Lost Era]]'' novel set between the movies and ''[[Star Trek: The Next Generation|The Next Generation]]'' features a younger version of a character introduced in a ''[[Star Trek: Deep Space Nine|Deep Space Nine]]'' novel, it's obvious there's some sort of "canonical" novel-setting, even if the TV series is not obliged to conform to it. This is where [[Fanon (fiction)|fanon]] and canon often collide, especially when a TV series, movie or other officially canonical source contradicts it. An example is the ''Trek'' novel ''Starfleet: Year One'', which appeared in print before the TV series ''[[Star Trek: Enterprise]]'' was announced, but was completely invalidated by the series. Generally, though, in the case of televised fiction, only facts which appear in the as-originally-aired version of a program are considered canonical (including scenes cut from re-runs, but not including such things as deleted scenes and scenes from unaired pilots and other such material that 'leaks out' over the Internet).{{Fact|date=September 2007}}

Furthermore, the issue is also complicated when the definition of a canon changes well after the fictional universe is established. As an example, in the 1970s and 1980s, there were a number of reference works published by [[Franz Joseph (artist)|Franz Joseph]] and [[FASA]] Corporation for ''Star Trek''. These books were considered canonical at the time (some even made with the explicit approval of Gene Roddenberry), sanctioned by [[Paramount Pictures]], and were used almost universally by novel and comic book authors, as well as the production staff of the earlier ''Star Trek'' movies (information from these manuals appeared as background dialogue in some scenes, and many diagrams were used as computer displays). However, in [[1988]], as part of the release of ''Star Trek: The Next Generation'', Gene Roddenberry and Paramount Pictures changed their policies regarding canonicity and stripped these books of their canonical status, as the new series quickly made many changes and revelations which openly contradicted earlier canonical books. Thus, a book that would be considered completely canonical in 1985 like ''[[The Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual]]'', would be considered non-canonical in 1995.

In some fictional universes, interviews and other communications from authors are also considered canonical — like [[The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien|the letters of J. R. R. Tolkien]] with relation to [[Middle-earth]]; also items such as interviews, Internet chat sessions, and websites (''e.g.'', the website of [[J. K. Rowling]] in relation to the ''[[Harry Potter]]'' series). This usually only happens in cases where all works in the universe have the same author.

In almost all cases, [[fan fiction]] is not considered canonical, as fan fiction is usually produced by amateurs. Sometimes, however, events or characterizations portrayed in fan fiction can become so influential that they are respected in fiction written by many different authors, and may be mistaken for canonical facts by fans. This is referred to as "[[fanon (fiction)|fanon]]". The use of fan fiction to fill gaps or [[Continuity (fiction)|continuity]] errors in a canon is derisively called "fanwanking," or "fanwank." (The terms "fanon" and "fanwank" can apply to officially-licensed works, as well.) An intentional inversion of the exclusion of fan fiction came in [[Eric Flint]]'s [[1632 series|''1632'' universe]]; in February [[2000]], fans and other established authors were invited on the Internet forum [[Baen's Bar]] to shape the [[Parallel universe (fiction)|multiverse]], and the fan-fic, once vetted, is itself published in the various ''[[The Grantville Gazette|Grantville Gazettes]]'', themselves under the direct editorial control of Flint and a ''1632'' editorial board. This is an ongoing process that apparently will continue indefinitely, as the series continues to burgeon in popularity.

==Examples of fictional canons==
===''Babylon 5''===
{{main|Babylon 5 Novels, novelizations, short stories, and comic books}}

Unique to the ''[[Babylon 5]]'' universe among virtually all other [[shared universe]]s is the sanctioned canonicity of many of its offshoot novels and comic book stories; nearly all of the ''Babylon 5'' novels and novelizations to date having been based on outlines written directly by [[J. Michael Straczynski]]. The later [[Del Rey Books|Del Rey]] books are considered to be more canonical than some of the earlier [[Dell (publisher)|Dell]] ones, although – per Straczynski's own remarks – canonical elements exist in every single book published to date; Straczynski's deeper involvement in the novel-publishing program from 1996 onward having ensured a greater level of canonicity within such works.

===''Buffy''verse===
{{main|Buffyverse canonical issues}}

The ''[[Buffyverse]]'' canon consists of the television series ''[[Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series)|Buffy the Vampire Slayer]]'' and ''[[Angel (TV series)|Angel]]'', as well as the comics ''[[The Origin (Buffy comic)|The Origin]]'', ''[[Fray]]'', ''[[Tales of the Vampires]]'', ''[[Tales of the Slayers]]'', ''[[Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight]]'', and ''[[Angel: After The Fall]]''. All of the tie-in novels and video games, along with most of the comics, are largely considered either non-canon or [[Apocrypha (fiction)|apocrypha]]. Some of the comics are written by members of Mutant Enemy writing staff; the canonical status of these materials is still unclear. The [[Buffy the Vampire Slayer (film)|1992 movie]] is not considered canon. The movie was remade into comic format, titled ''The Origin'' and this is considered canon instead.

===DC Universe===
{{main|DC Universe}}

Most, but not all, [[comic book]]s published by [[DC Comics]] (and some titles of the [[Vertigo Comics]] imprint) take place in a shared world known as the [[DC Universe]]. The canon of this world comprises all the [[Crisis on Infinite Earths|post-Crisis]] comics not stated to be set in an [[parallel universe (fiction)|alternate universe]], except those specifically contradicted by later stories following ''[[Zero Hour (comics)|Zero Hour]]'' (most notably, ''[[Batman: Year Two]]'', ''[[Batman: Son of the Demon]]'' and the ''[[Action Comics]] Weekly'' strip featuring [[Captain Marvel (DC Comics)|Captain Marvel]]). The events may not have occurred exactly as shown, however, owing to the [[floating timeline]].

Appearances of the DC Comics characters in other media are not considered canon; however, the appearance of a Marvel Comics character, Jigsaw, during a Marvel/DC comics publishing [[Intercompany crossover|crossover]], is apparently considered a piece of canon for the adventures of Jean-Paul Valley, aka [[Azrael (comics)|Azrael]], who at one point took up the role of The [[Batman]]. Jigsaw was an enemy of Frank Castle, a Marvel Comics character called The [[Punisher]].

Some discrepancies in the DC Universe's canon (continuity errors) are ''explained'' by concepts such as [[Hypertime (comics)|Hypertime]] or through the use of [[retcon]]s.

Following the events of the [[Infinite Crisis|second Crisis]] (2005) and ''[[52 (comic book)|52]]'' (2006/7), ''[[Batman: Son of the Demon]]'' has been written back into continuity as evidenced by ''[[Batman & Son]]''. Also many Elseworlds stories such as ''[[Kingdom Come (comics)|Kingdom Come]]'' and ''[[Gotham by Gaslight|Batman: Gotham by Gaslight]]'' are now canon, albeit in self-contained [[List of DC Multiverse worlds#The 52|alternate universes]]. All the stories of the [[WildStorm Universe]] also exist in this new Multiverse. Stories set in the [[DC animated universe|animated universe]] adapted from DC Comics stories were also integrated into an alternate reality.

===''Dungeons & Dragons''===
{{main|Dungeons & Dragons campaign settings}}

The concept of canon plays an important role in the fantasy [[role-playing game]] ''[[Dungeons & Dragons]]'' (D&D). Over the years, a number of [[campaign setting]]s have been published for ''D&D'', each detailing a world or worlds that provide a setting in which the game can be played. There are two types of canon issues that arise from this situation.

The first issue is intra-setting canon, which deals with the backstory, locations and gameplay dynamics considered to be canon within a specific setting. Because ''D&D'' generally falls into the fantasy sub-genre of [[sword-and-sorcery]], canon discrepancies can arise beyond just the typical issues in fiction of history, plot and character. For example, debates regarding canon within a given setting may include such arcana as the source of various magical powers and how they operate within the setting. Theological issues related to the various [[List of deities of Dungeons & Dragons|deities]] that may exist within the setting occur, as do disagreements regarding the canon [[cosmology]] of the setting's universe.

The second type of canon problem that arises in ''D&D'' is inter-setting canon, concerned primarily with the relationships between different settings. Many ''D&D'' publications have discussed how the various settings are related to each other within the ''D&D'' [[parallel universe (fiction)|multiverse]] of various [[Plane (Dungeons & Dragons)|planes of existence]], although these relationships are debated or even denied by some fans of the game.

There is no single "official" canon for ''D&D''. From the very beginnings of the game in the 1970s through to the present, the issue of canon has been left up to each individual [[Dungeon Master]], who runs the game session for the other players. The Dungeon Master is free to determine which published materials ([[Adventure (Dungeons & Dragons)|adventure modules]], novels, sourcebooks, video games, comic books, etc.) are canonical in his or her own campaign, and how the various ''D&D'' rules apply to that campaign.

Nevertheless, ''D&D'' players often move between games managed by different Dungeon Masters, and many also congregate for gaming tournaments, play in shared [[living campaigns]], or play the game online with different participants than in their normal gaming sessions. In order to achieve even a basic level of continuity among these various game instances, ''D&D'' fans must therefore confront the issue of canon.

To achieve the desired level of continuity, various mechanisms are employed to manage ''D&D'' "canon." The organizers of gaming tournaments, for example, will often specify which sets of rules and conventions are "in force" for tournament gameplay. Living campaigns may attempt to develop a more comprehensive set of canon materials and sourcebooks, such as the ''[[Living Greyhawk Gazetteer]]'' for the ''[[Living Greyhawk]]'' campaign. And for individually-run games, it is common for Dungeon Masters to briefly discuss their own vision of ''D&D'' canon with each new player who joins his or her campaign.

Finally, following the emergence of the [[World Wide Web]], a number of websites have arisen that enable players to discuss canon issues and work toward (or reject) canonical norms. These include the website of [[Wizards of the Coast]],<ref>http://www.wizards.com/</ref> the intellectual property rights holder and publisher for ''D&D'', as well as fan-run sites such as ''EN World''<ref>http://www.enworld.org/</ref> and ''[[Canonfire!]]''.<ref>http://www.canonfire.com/</ref>

===Harry Potter===
{{main|Harry Potter}}
Canon debate is a key focus of the Harry Potter fandom, particularly within fan websites such as [[The Harry Potter Lexicon]]. In addition to the seven books of the series, as well as the charity books [[Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them]] and [[Quidditch Through the Ages]] (which contains much material not mentioned in the main series), particular importance is placed upon what is personally said, implied or endorsed by author [[J.K. Rowling]]. There are some rare contradictions - for example, while the content of both the films and computer games based on the series have been endorsed by Rowling, new elements introduced within them (such as persons or spells not appearing in the books) are generally not considered canon.

Since the conclusion of the Harry Potter series, much attention has also been paid to Rowling's comments on things never directly mentioned in the books, such as the homosexuality of major character [[Professor Dumbledore]]. Rowling's statements in interviews and web chats on what `happens' to the books' characters beyond the scope of the novels is also accorded canon status, despite that she has made clear that she does not intend to officiate this information by adding further books to the series.
===Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy===
{{main|Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy}}
Every version of the ''[[Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy]]'' saga, which has been told and retold as a radio series, a book quintet, a text adventure, a live-action television series and a live-action film, flatly contradicts all the others to some extent. This is despite all of this material being written in whole or in part by series creator [[Douglas Adams]]. Which version(s) or details are "canonical", then, is largely a matter of personal preference. Adams acknowledged and embraced these inconsistencies in the preface to the first Omnibus edition of the ''Hitchhiker'' books, making ''The Guide'' a unique example of self-conscious canonicity.

===Marvel Universe===
{{main|Marvel Universe}}
Most, but not all, comic books published by [[Marvel Comics]] are set in a shared world known as the [[Marvel Universe]]. The canon for this world comprises all the comics not stated to be set in an [[parallel universe (fiction)|alternate universe]], except those specifically contradicted by later stories. The events may not have occurred exactly as shown, however, owing to the [[floating timeline]] (For instance, during the 1960s, Ben Grimm said he had fought in World War II alongside Nick Fury; during the 2000s, Grimm himself considered that the idea of him fighting in World War II was ridiculous, as he would be much older).

Alternate universes in Marvel Comics include, for example, the "Ultimate" line of Marvel comics, which have their own canon independent of the core Marvel universe.

Appearances of the Marvel Comics characters in other media are not considered canon. One of the few exceptions is the video game version of [[Ultimate Spider-Man (video game)|Ultimate Spider-Man]], which was made with the intention of being canon.

===Middle-earth===
{{main|Middle-earth canon}}

Defining the [[Middle-earth]] canon is difficult, because many key writings were not published by [[J. R. R. Tolkien]] before his death. A considerable number of [[Tolkien fandom|Tolkien fans]] do not believe that a canon can be defined at all, preferring to observe the evolution of Tolkien's stories in the many versions and drafts published posthumously in ''[[The History of Middle-earth]]'' series. Most, however, agree that ''[[The Hobbit]]'' and ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'' are canon, and also include a substantial amount of material published in ''[[The Silmarillion]]'', ''[[Unfinished Tales]]'', and other posthumous books, as well as information from Tolkien's [[The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien|letters]]. Works outside of canon include fan fiction (like [[Nick Perumov]]'s "Ring of Darkness"), art books (except for the collections of Tolkien's own art) and video games; the ''Lord of the Rings'' movies by [[Ralph Bakshi]] and [[Peter Jackson]] are generally considered non-canonical, as well. However, there are a group of Tolkien fans, sometimes called "Continuationists" who consider Roleplaying games, Video Games and the films as canon, unless they contradict with Tolkien's own works.

===Oz===
{{see also|List of Oz books|List of published Oz Apocrypha}}

Defining the [[Land of Oz]] canon is done in many different ways. The term "canon" for the Oz books was used as early as 1976, in ''The Oz Scrapbook'' by [[David L. Greene]] and [[Dick Martin (artist)|Dick Martin]]. [[James Thurber]] considered only the first two books canon, while some consider only the first book canon and the sequels to be moneymaking exercises. The series was continued by other writers who openly took credit for their work, unlike, for example, the [[Stratemeyer Syndicate]], which has caused many a fan, especially a young fan, to aspire to write their own additions to the canon. While many consider the fourteen [[L. Frank Baum]] books to be the true canon, most often, including for Greene and Martin, the canon is referred to as the forty books published by [[Reilly & Lee]], including the fourteen books of Baum (though Reilly & Lee did not publish ''[[The Wonderful Wizard of Oz]]'' until it fell into the public domain in 1956), the nineteen by [[Ruth Plumly Thompson]], three by longtime illustrator [[John R. Neill]], two by [[Jack Snow (writer)|Jack Snow]], one by [[Rachel R. Cosgrove]] and one by [[Eloise Jarvis McGraw]] and [[Lauren Lynn McGraw|Lauren McGraw Wagner]]. Some include even more books, particularly the additional books by these authors, including one by Baum (another is hard to reconcile with the canon, however), two by Thompson, two by McGraw, one by Cosgrove, and one by illustrator [[Dick Martin (artist)|Dick Martin]]. Some would go further and add the books of [[Eric Shanower]], who illustrated some of these "deuterocanonical" books (as [[The International Wizard of Oz Club]] refers to them), particularly since his writing and illustrations are generally both well-received. This is still a matter of much debate and one there is no firm agreement on. For example, ''[[The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus]]'' is very important to the world-building of the countries that surround Oz and the immortal races that live on the continent, but some have excluded it from canon because [[Santa Claus]] is tied to [[Christianity]] and others because it is not in accord with what later Oz writers, including Thompson and [[Robin Hess]], have written about Santa Claus.

===Sherlock Holmes===
{{main|Canon of Sherlock Holmes}}

The [[Sherlock Holmes]] canon consists of the stories and novels written by [[Arthur Conan Doyle]]. This was decided by [[the Baker Street Irregulars]], a group of Holmes enthusiasts, to distinguish the original stories from the [[pastiche]]s that followed Holmes' retirement, and is probably the first use of the word in this context. However, certain Conan Doyle items were disregarded for other reasons and additions to the current canon of sixty mysteries has been discussed.

===Star Trek===
{{main|Star Trek canon}}

The ''[[Star Trek]]'' canon consists of the television series ''[[Star Trek: The Original Series|Star Trek]]'', ''[[Star Trek: The Next Generation]]'', ''[[Star Trek: Deep Space Nine]]'', ''[[Star Trek: Voyager]]'', ''[[Star Trek: Enterprise|Enterprise]]'', and the ten ''Star Trek'' movies. Originally, there was little official policy on canon, and ''[[Star Trek: The Animated Series]]'' and some books like ''[[The Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual]]'' were apparently canonical (and excerpts from them were even used onscreen in the early movies). However, circa 1987, when ''Star Trek: The Next Generation'' was debuting, [[Gene Roddenberry]] and [[Paramount Pictures]] agreed on a new canon policy that made ''Star Trek: The Animated Series'' non-canonical, as well as removing the canon status of all technical manuals and novels. Gene Roddenberry further stated that some elements from the films ''[[Star Trek V: The Final Frontier]]'' and ''[[Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country]]'' were "slightly apocryphal". The writers and production staff of ''Star Trek'' have also said in interviews and DVD commentaries that they unofficially struck the ''Star Trek: Voyager'' episode "''[[Threshold (Voyager episode)|Threshold]]''" from canon{{Fact|date=January 2008}}, and made no references to the events of that episode after it was made; officially, however, being an onscreen, televised story, it remains canonical.

The canonicity of the various reference books such as ''[[The Star Trek Encyclopedia]]'' and various companions accompanying the series is still debated. Many consider such reference works to be canon, while others do not; there is currently no clear answer solving this problem. It should be noted that most of the information from the ''The Star Trek Encyclopedia'' and ''The Star Trek Chronology'' comes directly from the television series and movies, which themselves are canon, and the books were written by people who worked on the production staff, and sometimes were used as internal references. A similar problem exists with [[trading card]]s cataloguing information from the series.

Paramount has made a formal comment on its website<ref>http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/help/faqs/faq/676.html</ref> about precisely what items are considered canon. The canonical nature of ''[[Star Trek (2008)]]'', however, remains in doubt. The writers have stated in an interview<ref>http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1554046/story.jhtml</ref> that although the film will be staying true to the Star Trek universe, it will also be a re-imagining (though they have also assured that it will not be changed to the same degree as the second ''[[Battlestar Galactica]]'' show was from its original).

===''Star Wars''===
{{main|Star Wars canon}}

The ''[[Star Wars]]'' canon is a complex issue, and Lucas Licensing has devised a four-level system called the [[Holocron]] continuity database to keep track of the ''Star Wars'' canon. The purpose of this database is to chronicle all ''Star Wars'' stories, and settle any disputes that may arise within the various productions. The basic rule, however, is that the ''Star Wars'' canon comprises the six ''Star Wars'' films, along with all officially licensed ''Star Wars'' stories not contradicting the films.

The DK Guide to the entire universe utilizes many spin-offs to help describe the six films. Derivative works such as the ''Star Wars'' books have aimed to be completely in continuity with each other and with the ''Star Wars'' movies.

===''Transformers''===
{{main|Transformers (fiction)}}

The ''[[Transformers (toyline)|Transformers]]'' canon is unusual, in that there at ''least'' four completely distinct ''Transformers'' universes; one consisting of the universe introduced in 1984 with the "Generation One" series and extended through the [[Beast Wars]] and [[Transformers: Universe]] series, the stand-alone [[Transformers: Robots in Disguise]] series, the [[Unicron Trilogy]], consisting of the ''Armada'', ''Energon'', and ''Cybertron'' lines, and the world featured in the 2007 live-action feature film. Even within these completely disparate universes, there are multiple stories that contradict each other; for instance, under the banner of "Generation One" are several completely different comic book series from four different publishers, the Japanese "Headmasters" series, which openly replaces the events of the U.S. "Rebirth" miniseries, as well as [[gamebooks]], coloring books, audio cassettes, young adult novels, and video games, as well as the toy packaging itself, all of which take various liberties with the same characters. As such, the Transformers universe includes such problems as multiple origin stories for the [[Constructicons]] and [[Optimus Prime]].

The general position of [[Hasbro]], owners of the line, is that all Transformer stories are in fact true, and exist in multiple and separate alternate universes, so that the Marvel Comics stories are just as true as the coloring books, which are as true as the animated shows. All of these universes are connected by the existence of [[Primus (Transformers)|Primus]] and [[Unicron]], who are singularities; they exist in all of the Transformer universes.<ref>http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Canon</ref>

'''Shadwell Basin''' is the most significant body of water surviving from the historical [[London Docks]] in [[Wapping]], [[London]], situated on the north side of the river [[Thames]] east (downstream) of the [[Tower of London]] and [[Tower Bridge]] and west (upstream) of [[Limehouse]].

Unlike the rest of the London Docks which has been landfilled, Shadwell Basin, the most easterly part of the complex, has been retained. It is now a maritime square of 2.8 hectares used for recreational purposes (including sailing, canoeing and fishing) and is surrounded on three sides by an attractive waterside housing development designed by leading British architects MacCormac, Jamieson, Prichard and Wright.

The residential buildings are four and five storeys with facades of alternatively open arches and enclosed structure, echoing the scale of traditional 19th century dockside warehouses, with a colonnade at quayside.

Shadwell Basin is a popular public route for cyclists, joggers and pedestrians with a walkway alongside the water as part of the linked open spaces and canals between the river and Hermitage Basin near [[St Katherine's Dock]] to the west. Having been part of London's first enclosed dock, Shadwell Basin is now part of the open access to the river and leisure amenities approach characterized by developments since the mid 1980s throughout much of [[Docklands]].

== History ==

The London Docks expanded eastward in the 1830s with the opening of the Eastern Dock and Shadwell Basin (built 1828–32). To provide these new docks with access to the river, a new entrance at Shadwell was built. Opened in 1832, it was named Shadwell Entrance (the main entrance to the London Dock was through Wapping Entrance with a third entrance at Hermitage Basin).

By the 1850s, the London Dock Company had recognised that the entrances at both Wapping and Shadwell were too small to accommodate the newer and larger ships coming into service. In 1854-58 the company built a new larger entrance (45 feet wide) and a new basin at Shadwell (the only element of the London Docks system to have survived redevelopment to this day) linked to the west part of the docks by Eastern Dock and the short Tobacco Dock.

Even by the start of the 20th century the docks in Wapping had become outdated as steam power meant ships were built too large to fit into them. Cargoes were unloaded downriver and then ferried by barge to warehouses in Wapping. This system was uneconomic and inefficient and one of the main reasons that the docks in Wapping were the first to close in the 1960s.

The London docks complex closed to shipping in 1969. Purchased by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Shadwell Basin and the western part of the London Docks fell into a derelict state, mostly a large open tract of land. Acquired in 1981 by the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC), redevelopment of Shadwell Basin took place in 1987 resulting in 169 houses and flats being built around the retained historic dock.
