"Umbrella" has been the [[Billboard Hot 100]] number-one single so far for four weeks, making it the second most successful single of 2007 on the Hot 100 (with Beyonce's [[Irreplacable]] being the most successful single at 7 weeks on the [[Hot 100]] chart in 2007). The song is also notable for simultaneously topping the [[U.S.]], [[U.K.]], [[Canada|Canadian]], [[Ireland|Irish]], [[Germany|German]], [[Australia|Australian]] and [[New Zealand]] charts along with being the number one single on the [[United World Chart]] during the same week.

Many major radio stations in [[Los Angeles]], [[Boston]], [[New York City]] have played versions of the song that either shortened or completely removed Jay-Z's rap. On the issue dated [[March 28]], [[2007]] the single debuted on the [[Billboard Hot 100|''Billboard'' Hot 100]] at number ninety-one.

To date, the song has received mostly positive reviews.

On the day of its digital release in the U.S. it debuted at number one on [[iTunes Store]] overall sales and [[R&B]] charts, surpassing the top song "[[Makes Me Wonder]]" by [[Maroon 5]].

"Umbrella" became the first song by a female artist to debut at number one on the official [[UK Singles Chart]] solely on download sales. This also made Rihanna achieve her first UK number-one single. It increased its sales to 38,482 in its second download-only week, taking its two-week total up to 72,646. In its third week, "Umbrella"'s sales were 60,650 (with the help of the physical release), taking total sales up to 133,296 in just 21 days time. Sales in its fourth week stood at 48,370, taking sales up to 181,666 in 28 days time. In its fifth week at number one Umbrella sold 39,038 (downloads + physical sales), the total sales now stand at 220,668 .
In Australia, the single entered the singles chart at number one, becoming Rihanna's second number-one single. It also debuted number one on the Australian Urban Charts and remained their for three weeks.

On the issue date June 9, "Umbrella" topped the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart with a rise from number 41 to number one, as well as the ''Billboard'' Digital charts (and it also climbed up a number of other Billboard charts); the song was downloaded 277,000 times in the United States, the highest debut week sum since [[Nielsen SoundScan]] began tracking downloads in 2003. Three weeks after being released to iTunes "Umbrella" once again remained at number one, and with a slight 6% decline in sales, it sold 220,000 downloads. On [[Chris Brown (singer)|Chris Brown]]'s upcoming album, ''[[Exclusive (album)|Exclusive]]'', Brown wrote an answer-song titled "Cinderella" with the same beat but different lyrics. It has been released to radio stations as of June 12, 2007. 17-year old rapper [[Lil' Mama]] is featured on the remix where her first verse replaces Jay-Z's verse and has a second verse in the middle of the song. This remix has been leaked to urban radio stations. On the [[Def Jam]] website there is also a [[Travis Barker]] rock remix that has surfaced.

==Promotion==

Rihanna has been making formal appearances all over England. She also performed three of her new songs in [[Preston]] at the [[BBC Radio 1]] [[One Big Weekend]] event. At a mini/promotional concert, she performed "Umbrella", "[[Shut Up and Drive]]" and "Breakin' Dishes". Rihanna performed the song at the [[2007 MTV Movie Awards|MTV Movie Awards 2007]]. In Germany she performed the song exclusively at ''[[VIVA|Viva Live]]'' and the 42nd edition of the highly popular chart show ''[[The Dome]]''.

It premiered at 10:00 a.m. on [[April 26]], [[2007]] at www.thisisrihanna.com. Downloads were made available for those in the U.S only. The video was released on the [[iTunes Store]] on [[May 11]], [[2007]]. It has remained at number one for three weeks so far.

The video starts with Jay-Z rapping in a rain of sparks. Rihanna starts singing in a steamy place. During the first chorus, she can be seen walking around [[en pointe]]. Later, Rihanna is seen in various positions bodypainted silver. In the endcap of the video, she dances with her umbrella amid a shower of sparks falling like rain where Jay-Z was rapping at the beginning of the video.

There are two different versions of the video. The version that premiered on [[April 30]], [[2007]] on [[MTV]] is different from the one that aired online. In the MTV version, water effects were added during the splashing sequence. This version is shown on television stations and on some websites. On [[May 14]], [[2007]], the "Umbrella" video premiered on [[BET]]'s ''[[106 & Park]]'' at number nine and has peaked at number four as of [[May 30]], [[2007]] , Rihanna's first video to chart on the countdown since her debut single, "[[Pon de Replay]]", in 2005. In this version, she can also be seen walking en pointe and the added water effects can be seen. On [[May 1]], [[2007]] Umbrella debuted on [[MTV]]'s ''[[Total Request Live]]'' at number ten, and by [[May 9]] it had reached the number-one spot, where it has spent a total of 15 days and has been on the countdown for 31 Days.
