Although clowns are originally comic performers and characterized to humor and entertain people, the image of the evil clown is a development in popular culture, in which the playful trope of the clown is rendered as disturbing through the use of horror elements and dark humor.

Origins
The modern archetype of the evil clown has unclear origins; the stock character appeared infrequently during the 19th Century, in such works as Edgar Allan Poe's Hop-Frog, which is believed by Jack Morgan, of the University of Missouri-Rolla, to draw upon an earlier incident "at a masquerade ball," in the 14th Century, during which "the king and his frivolous party, costumed—in highly flammable materials—as simian creatures, were ignited by a flambeau and incinerated, the King narrowly escaping in the actual case." Evil clowns also occupied a small niche in drama, appearing in the 1874 work La femme de Tabarin by Catulle Mendès and in Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci (accused of being a plagiarism of Mendès' piece), both works featuring murderous clowns as central characters.

The modern stock character of the evil clown was popularized by Stephen King's novel It, which was the first to introduce the fear of an evil clown to a modern audience. Another one of the first appearances of the concept is that of John Wayne Gacy, an American serial killer and rapist who became known as the Killer Clown after it was discovered that he performed as Pogo the Clown at children's parties and other events.

The evil clown archetype plays strongly off the sense of dislike caused by inherent elements of coulrophobia; however, it has been suggested by Joseph Durwin that the concept of evil clowns have an independent position in popular culture, arguing that "the concept of evil clowns and the widespread hostility it induces is a cultural phenomenon which transcends just the phobia alone". A study by the University of Sheffield concluded "that clowns are universally disliked by children. Some found them quite frightening and unknowable." This may be because of the nature of clowns' makeup hiding their faces, making them potential threats in disguise; as a psychology professor at California State University, Northridge stated, young children are "very reactive to a familiar body type with an unfamiliar face". This natural disliking of clowns makes them effective to use in a literary or fictional context, as the antagonistic threat perceived in clowns is desirable in a villainous character.

Interpretations
The concept of the evil clown is related to the irrational fear of clowns, known as coulrophobia. The cultural critic Mark Dery has theorized the postmodern archetype of the evil clown in "Cotton Candy Autopsy: Deconstructing Psycho-Killer Clowns" (a chapter in his cultural critique The Pyrotechnic Insanitarium: American Culture on the Brink).

Tracking the image of the demented or deviant clown across popular culture, Dery analyzes the "Pogo the Clown" persona of the serial killer John Wayne Gacy; the obscene clowns of the neo-situationist Cacophony Society; the Joker (of "Batman" Fame); the grotesque art of R.K. Sloane; the sick-funny Bobcat Goldthwaite comedy Shakes the Clown; and Pennywise the Dancing Clown from Stephen King's It.

Using Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of the carnivalesque, Jungian and historical writings on the images of the fool in myth and history, and ruminations on the mingling of ecstasy and dread in the Information Age, Dery asserts the evil clown is an icon of our times. Clowns are often depicted as murderous psychopaths at many American haunted houses.

Wolfgang M. Zucker points out the similarities between a clown's appearance and the cultural depictions of demons and other infernal creatures, noting "[the clown's] chalk-white face in which the eyes almost disappear, while the mouth is enlarged
to a ghoulish bigness looks like the mask of death.".
* Malcolm the Jester is arguably the main character of The Legend of Kyrandia computer game series - he is the antagonist of the first game, wielding vast magical power to cause wanton destruction for his own amusement, or to toy with and torment the protagonist and his allies in ways that are often elegant in their subtle terror (such as turning someone to stone with the exception of their eyes). Though the first game ends with his defeat, he is mentioned in the second game, and in the third game he returns as the protagonist - gone are his magical powers, so he relies on more mundane talents of mischief, manipulation, and skills befitting a royal jester to make his way in the world, and it is revealed that while he is an imbalanced and misanthropic trickster, he is not actually the fiendish villain he seemed in the first game.

"Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" is a song co-written by American pop singer Christina Aguilera, Paul Rein, Johan Aberg, Celebrity Status (C. Blackmon, R. Cham, E. Dawkins), Guy Roche, Shelly Peiken and Ron Fair for Aguilera's debut album Christina Aguilera (1999).
It was co-produced by Fair and Celebrity Status.

The song is about Aguilera eying a prospective boyfriend and declaring come on over baby ... 'cause all I want is you. It was released as the album's fourth single in the summer of 2000 (see 2000 in music), and was the first single on which Aguilera had been given significant creative control. It peaked at number one in the U.S., and was very successful elsewhere as well. This was also the first time in which Aguilera was allowed to toy with her image in the music video for the song, kicking off a long evolution of looks the singer would end up doing over the span of her career. The brand new look, which included more revealing outfits and streaks of red and blue in her hair, was also used for her debut Spanish language album Mi Reflejo and also for her first headlining tour in Summer 2000.

Both music videos - "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" and "Ven Conmigo (Solamente Tú)" - were directed by Paul Hunter.

Writing and recording
Like "What a Girl Wants" (the second single from Christina Aguilera), a new remixed and re-recorded version of "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" was released as a single rather than the original album version. The album version, which had been known simply as "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)", was seen as unsuitable for single release. Since the single had been originally produced and written by Paul Rein and Johan Aberg, the pair were given the first opportunity to change the song. Aguilera and Ron Fair (her mentor) were not impressed with their efforts, and turned to the producing team known only as Celebrity Status.

With Celebrity Status and Ron Fair producing, "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" (the album version) was transformed into "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" with a more pop oriented, hip hop-influenced production (as opposed to the original piano rich production). New and more sexual lyrics, a chord progression for the song's b-section, a bridge (the original song did not have a bridge), a "rap" from Aguilera, a new mid-song dance breakdown, and more powerful vocals by Aguilera were also added. (The song also features limited new elements from Guy Roche and Shelly Peiken.)

As the original album version does not have a bridge, it had previously been performed live with an interlude that sampled the disco song "Got to Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn. When the original songwriters of "Got to Be Real" were contacted for permission to sample their song, they denied clearance. Instead, Aguilera's team added a part to the song referencing "What a Girl Wants":

You give me, what a girl feels, what a girl likes, what a girl needs, what a girl wants.

Aguilera helped write the song's controversial and slightly sexual rap section: (not in the album version)

Don't ya wanna be the one tonight? We can do exactly what you like. Don't ya wanna be just you and me? We can do what comes naturally.

This rap (and also a section in the second verse in which Aguilera discusses sexuality and a man's hands on her body) caused Radio Disney to ban the song initially, as it had done to "Genie in a Bottle" (the album's first single). The original album version of the song, "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)", was allowed to be played, and an edited version of "Come On Over Baby" (which removed the second verse and the rap) was also given some airplay. Reportedly, the edited single version received more airplay on the station than the album version of the song.
Chart performance
"Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" became Aguilera's third number-one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and the RIAA eventually certified the single gold. It spent four weeks at the top, from October 8 to November 4 2000; it replaced "Music" by Madonna, and was replaced by Creed's "With Arms Wide Open". It spent twenty-one weeks on the Hot 100, and ranked thirty-eight on the Hot 100's 2000 year-end charts. The Spanish-language version of the single, "Ven Conmigo (Solamente Tú)",sticking to the original arrangement, was also a huge latin music success, becoming Aguilera's first number-one single on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart, and reaching #1 as well in Spain.

After receiving a strong push from the record label and Aguilera herself, the single became a big hit for Aguilera, with many considering it a 'comeback' due to the slight underperformance of her previous single I Turn To You. Not only did the single hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and had stronger airplay than the previous single, but the video also became Aguilera's most popular video to date, becoming a huge #1 hit on TRL and receiving strong airplay on MTV, VH1, and even Disney & Nickeoldeon.

"Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" reached the top ten in the UK, Japan and Australia and the top twenty in Canada, but was less successful in Continental Europe, reaching the top forty in most markets. This single sold over 4,817,000 million copies worldwide.
