Janelle Monáe is an alternative, soul, futuristic, and rock performer and singer. Originally from Kansas City, Kansas she was first featured on the Purple Ribbon All-Star's Compilation Got Purp? Volume 2 in 2005. Her song "Lettin' Go," from this album became a cult hit and a fan favorite. Her next major feature was on OutKast's movie soundtrack for Idlewild, where she is featured on the songs "Call The Law" and "In Your Dreams." She was also featured in the video for the single "Morris Brown," with Big Boi and Scar.

She is currently signed to Bad Boy Records. The Wondaland Arts Society was founded by the Wolfmasters Nate "Rocket" Wonder, Chuck Lightning, and Delvin Franklin along with manager George "Rico" Rodriguez, Mitch Mitchowski, and Janelle Monáe herself. Other artists on The Wondaland Arts Society include the Afro-punk group Deep Cotton.

Escaping from the underworld of her hometown, Monáe attended the American Musical Academy in New York City where she studied musical theatre and planned to pursue a career on the stages of Broadway. But feeling stifled by the lack of dynamic roles for black women on Broadway, Monáe decided to relocate to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue her dream of changing the world through her music. Monáe made her debut in Atlanta in the Fall of 2003. At the time, she was enrolled in Georgia Perimeter College and studied Science. She performed at various events in the Atlanta University Center. Her first solo project "The Audition" consisted of raw acoustic production from fellow AUC group BOF (Best of Friends) and from Nate "Rocket" Wonder and Chuck Lightning of Wondaland Productions.

Monáe originally planned on releasing "Metropolis" in four separate parts, or "Suites." The first Suite of Metropolis, titled "The Chase" was released in August of 2007 via her label, the Wondaland Arts Society. The first single from Suite I of Metropolis, "Violet Stars Happy Hunting" has since become an internet sensation and is an underground hit. Her album is available exclusively via her website and live performances, as well as iTunes and other mp3 download sites. In late 2007, Janelle Monae signed with Sean "Diddy" Combs' label, Bad Boy Records via her own recording label, The Wondaland Arts Society. Through the joint venture, Monáe will follow up the suite with Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition), heralded by the album's first single Many Moons and in stores on August 12th, 2008. The Many Moons video premiered on BET's 106 and Park on September 25, 2008. Janelle plans on releasing a full length album in January 2009.

Art Nouveau Magazine named Janelle Monae as one of five artists you'll know by 2008.

Monáe is featured on "My First Love" from The Jaspects' debut album, "In House Sessions", and on "Peachtree Blues" from their sophomore album, "Broadcasting the Definition".

Some of Janelle Monáe's musical influences include Judy Garland, James Brown, Grace Brown, Karen O, Lauryn Hill, Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, Outkast, Bach, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bjork, Anita Baker, and The Hives, to name a few.

Monáe will be releasing "Metropolis" in four separate parts, or "Suites." The first Suite of Metropolis, titled "The Chase" was released in August of 2007 via her label, the Wondaland Arts Society. The first single from Suite I of Metropolis, "Violet Stars Happy Hunting" has become an internet sensation and is already an underground hit. Her album is available exclusively via her website and live performances, as well as iTunes and other mp3 download sites.

In late 2007, Janelle Monae signed with Sean "Diddy" Combs' label, Bad Boy Records.

Art Nouveau Magazine named Janelle Monae as one of five artists you'll know by 2008.

Monáe is also featured on the Jaspect's Album "Broadcasting the Definition" on the song "Peachtree Blues".

Some of Janelle Monáe's musical influences include Michael Jackson, Judy Garland, James Brown, Cameo, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Outkast, Bach, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, SWV, Bjork, and The Hives, to name a few.
Juju is a word of West African origin that refers to the supernatural power ascribed to an object.

mughunthan juju

Juju Magic
Juju(mugunthan fom malaysia) is an aura or other magical property, usually having to do with spirits or luck, which is bound to a specific object; it is also a term for the object. Juju also refers to the spirits and ghosts in West African lore as a general name. The object that contains the juju, or fetish, can be anything from an elephant’s head to an extinguisher. One of the most popular juju objects in West Africa, for example, is a monkey's hand. In general, juju can only be created by a witch doctor; few exceptions exist. Juju can be summoned by a witch doctor for several purposes. Good juju can cure ailments of mind and body; anything from fractured limbs to a headache can be corrected. Bad juju is used to exact revenge, soothe jealousy, and cause misfortune. Contrary to common belief, voodoo is not related to juju, despite the linguistic and spiritual similarities. Juju has acquired some karmic attributes in more recent times. Good juju can stem from almost any good deed: saving a kitten, or returning a lost book. Bad juju can be spread just as easily. These ideas revolve around the luck and fortune portions of juju. The use of juju to describe an object usually involves small items worn or carried; these generally contain medicines produced by witchdoctors.
Examples: Hangover = Bad juju; No hangover Good juju. Animal Juju? Skunk gets its head caught in a can. Skunk walks around clunking into things. Skunk has bad Juju until can is removed.
Juju is also the name of a popular Nigerian music. Tied closely to Yoruba culture, Juju generally features the tension drum (aka "talking drum') and bright, shimmering guitar lines, often played on a steel guitar. Though the form arose in the early half of the 20th century, it found its first real audience on Nigerian stages in the 1960s following the popularity of Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey and accordionist I.K. Dairo, M.B.E. In the late '60s former Highlife guitarist King Sunny Adé emerged as a force in the music. As the '60s became the '70s, Adé and Obey became the leading lights of Juju, audiences and the press casting Adé as an innovator and Obey as a traditionalist.

Both Obey and Adé found international audiences in the 1980s, Adé becoming a superstar when he signed with Island Records in their bid to find an African Bob Marley, and Obey with his breakthrough album Current Affairs (1980).
Juju is a term used in the United States military (especially in Infantry and combat arms) to describe a superstitious behavior which is believed to put a person at either a a greater risk of bodily or to protect them from harm. This term is almost always used in the negative context, i.e. “bad Juju”.

Juju as military slang is distinct from behavior which could reasonably increase or decrease a person's chances for injury. While not wearing a helmet can be considered “bad juju”, it is not because it leaves the head exposed but because the action tempts fate. Juju can also be assigned to signs such as unusual dreams or occurrences. It is often used in reference to behavior indicative of enemy activity, such as a lack of people in a normally crowded market. Juju also has a karmic element to it, especially when relating to people who have been injured. Treating an injured civilian, especially a child, is “good juju”. Stealing personal effects or making fun of a soldier that was injured or killed is considered to be “very bad juju”.
Kelvin Darnell Martin (July 24, 1964 - October 24, 1987) is known to the underworld as the "50 Cent".

Martin grew up in the Bronx, New York, but later moved to Brooklyn, New York and was known as a stick-up kid in the Fort Greene projects. Throughout the 1980s, Martin became a well-known robber who managed to claim his success through the robbery and murder of local hustlers. His life was chronicled in an in-depth biography starting from his upbringing to the current 50 Cent's rise to fame. He was also a pimp. The documentary Infamous Times: The Original 50 Cent details the life of Kelvin Martin, the infamous gangster. Martin allegedly stole one of Rakim's chains and robbed LL cool J's chain in a carpark in Brooklyn.

Friends estimate that, throughout his life, Martin had sustained at least 24 bullet wounds. Ultimately, gunshot wounds were his cause of death. He was shot on October 20, 1987 on the stairway of one of his hideouts, dying four days later in hospital. No witnesses came forward regarding the incident.
"Umbrella" is a song written by Terius "The Dream" Nash and rapper Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter for Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad.

Background and single release
According to songwriter Terius Nash, the song was offered to many labels before being recorded by Rihanna. Artists Hilary Duff, Mary J. Blige, Rachael Price and Akon are all rumored to have passed on the song, before Karen Kwak at Universal contacted Antonio "L.A" Reid.

In many parts of the U.S. the single was released on March 28, 2007, although its proper release date was March 29, 2007. The song premiered on the New York radio station Hot 97 and on her official website on March 29 at 5:00pm EST. The song has already received heavy rotation in several major markets.

It premiered on UK radio station BBC Radio 1 on the Scott Mills show. In the UK, the song was released digitally on May 14 2007 with the physical CD release on May 28 2007, one week before the album is released.

Many major radio stations in Los Angeles, Boston, New York City have played versions of the song that either shortened or completely removed Jay-Z's rap from the song. On the issue dated March 28, 2007 the single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number ninety-one.

To date, the song has received mostly positive reviews.

On the day of its digital release in the U.S. it debuted at number one on iTunes Store overall sales and R&B charts, surpassing the top song "Makes Me Wonder" by Maroon 5.

"Umbrella" became the first song by a female artist to debut at number one on The Official UK Singles Chart solely on download sales. The song entered the charts at number one on May 20 2007 selling 34,164 downloads that week. This also made Rihanna achieve her first UK number one single. It increased its sales to 38,482 in its second download only week, taking its two-week total up to 72,646. In its third week, Umbrella's sales were 60,650 (with the help of the physical release), taking total sales up to 133,296 in just 21 days time. In Australia, the single entered the singles chart at number one, becoming Rihanna's second #1 single.

On the issue date June 9, "Umbrella" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a rise from number 41 to number one, as well as the Billboard Digital Chart (and climbed up a number of other Billboard charts); the song was downloaded 277,000 times in the United States, the highest debut week sum since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003. It was also Rihanna's second number one song on the chart, after "SOS", which both have records for one of the biggest jumps to number one on the Hot 100 chart. The song also set a record on the iTunes Digital Music Store with the biggest debut in iTunes' six-year history, according to the download site, beating out a record previously held by Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie". In addition to its chart climbing ability, "Umbrella" had began gaining much popularity around the world almost two months before it was officially released for paid downloads, as it was released to iTunes May 28, 2007. Two weeks after being released to iTunes "Umbrella" remains atop the chart, with a second week say of 234,000 a 15% decline from the first week, but still strong enough to remain the number one digital song. Rihanna's total sales have surpassed 500,000, the single is certified double platinum based on digital sales. The song is also the first number-one single on Billboard magazine's Canadian Hot 100 chart. On Chris Brown's new album, Exclusive, Brown wrote an answer-song titled "Cinderella" with the same beat but different lyrics.

Promotion
Rihanna has been making formal appearances all over England. She has also performed three of her new songs in Preston. At a mini/promotional concert, she performed "Umbrella", "Shut Up and Drive" and "Breaking Dishes". Rihanna performed the song at the MTV Movie Awards 2007.
It premiered at 10:00 a.m. on April 26, 2007 at www.thisisrihanna.com. Downloads were made available for those in the U.S only. The video was released on the iTunes Store on May 11, 2007. It has remained at number 1 for 2 weeks so far.

The video starts with Jay-Z rapping his part in a rain of sparks. Rihanna starts singing in a steamy place. During the first chorus, she can be seen walking around en pointe. Later, Rihanna is seen in various positions bodypainted silver. In the endcap of the video, she dances with her umbrella amid a shower of sparks falling like rain where Jay-Z was singing at the beginning of the video.

There are two different versions of the video. The version that premiered on April 30, 2007 on MTV is different from the one that aired online. In the MTV version, water effects were added during the splashing sequence. This version is shown on television stations and on some websites. On May 14, 2007, the "Umbrella" video premiered on BET's 106 & Park at number nine and has peaked at #4 as of May 30, 2007 , Rihanna's first video to chart on the countdown since her debut single, "Pon de Replay", in 2005. In this version, she can not be seen walking en pointe but the added water effects can be seen. On May 1, 2007 Umbrella debuted on MTV's Total Request Live at number ten, and by May 9 it had reached the number-one spot, where it has spent a total of 12 days at #1, during its current 23-day-run on the countdown.
Makeba, Willie Clarke and Clarence Reid for Beyoncé's second solo album, B'Day (2006). It is her fourth collaboration with Jay-Z, who is featured on the song. The song samples Betty Wright's "Girls Can't Do What the Guys Do", and was originally going to have featured T.I.. The video was directed by Melina, who also directed Ludacris' "Money Maker" and Ying Yang Twins' "Dangerous". The video was shot on January 25, 2007. The video premiered on February 28 on 106 & Park, the same day as the video for her other release, Beautiful Liar featuring Shakira, on TRL. In the beginning, Beyoncé is seen mouthing the words of Jay-Z's lyrics, dressed in masculine, hip-hop style clothing. In the beginning of the video where she was in the pool she has a very striking resemblance to Jennifer Lopez "Waiting for Tonight". She is later seen singing in the trunk of and in the backseat of a Rolls Royce. During the choruses she she dances in a gold minidress in front of a group of male back-up dancers. She continues the Jay-Z imitation through his rapped verse, and halfway through it Jay-Z appears to finish the rap himself. Beyoncé is seen amidst gold watches and jewelery, continuing the motif of luxury that is alluded to in the song. As of March 7, 2007 the music video has peaked at #6 on BET's 106 & Park.
Don’t You Want Me is a single by the British Synthpop group The Human League it has become their most commercially successful recording to date and has sold over 1,400,000 copies making it the 25th most successful single of all time in the UK.

Background
The lyrics were originally inspired after front man Philip Oakey read a story in "a trashy tabloid" at a US airport. Originally conceived as a male solo, Oakey was inspired by the Film "A Star Is Born" and decided to turn the song in to a conflicting duet with one of the band’s two female vocalists. Susanne Sulley (now called Susan Gayle) was asked to take on the role. Up until then she and the other female vocalist Joanne Catherall had only been assigned backing vocals. The exact reason for the choice of singer has not been revealed and Sulley says it was luck of the draw. Commentators give two more realistic reasons for her choice, that Sulley was the better singer and/or that Catherall, a much more introverted character shied away from the role. Musicians Jo Callis and Adrian Wright created a synthesizer score to accompany the lyrics which was much harsher than the version that was actually released and reportedly similar to The Things That Dreams Are Made Of from the same Album. Initial versions of the song were recorded but Virgin appointed Producer Martin Rushent was unhappy with this version. He and Callis remixed it giving it a softer, and in Oakeys opinion "Popy" sound. Oakey hated the new version and thought it the weakest track on Dare. Resulting in one of his infamous rows with Rushent. Oakey hated it so much that it was relegated to the last track on the B side of the (Vinyl) Album.

Prior to the release of Dare the group had released two of the tracks as singles in their own right. The Sound of the crowd and Love Action both of which had been hits, with sales of Dare doing well Virgin released Open Your Heart in October 1981 which went to No 6 in the UK. With a hit album and 3 hit singles in a row Virgin's Simon Draper and band manager Bob Last decided to pull one more single from the album before the end of 1981. Their choice of Don’t You Want Me instantly caused a row with Oakey who didn’t want another single released because he was convinced that "the public were now sick of hearing The Human League" and the choice of the "poor quality filler track" would almost certainly be a disasterwrecking the groups popularity. Virgin were adamant that a forth single was going to be released and Oakey finally agreed, on the condition that a Large colour poster was given away with the Single because he felt fans would ‘feel ripped off’ by the substandard single alone.
Virgin were also aware that Promotional music video was becoming an important marketing tool, with MTV being launched that year. Because it was agreed that the Video for Open Your Heart had looked cheap and nasty. They commissioned a much more elaborate and expensive promotional Video than before using film maker Steve Baron.

Sales
Don’t You Want Me was released in the UK on 5th December 1981 and to everyone (and especially Oakey’s) amazement it went almost immediately to Number 1 and remained in the UK charts for 13 weeks. The success was repeated 6 months later with the release of Dare in the US, Don’t You Want Me went to Number 1 on the Billboard 100. The Single has been The Human Leagues most commercially successful to date it has so far sold 1,400,000 copies making it the 25th highest selling single ever in the UK.

The Song Today
Today the song still sells well and Fans expect the group to play the track whenever they perform live. Oakey still describes the song as over rated but acknowledges he was wrong and says he is proud of the track. Susan Gayle is often irritated that she constantly has to refute the mistaken assumption that the song is a reference to her and Catherall joining the Band. Oakey is also at pains to point out another misconception that it isn’t a love song but "a nasty song about sexual power politics"

The music video for the song was filmed in Slough, UK in October 1981 and has the theme of the shooting and editing of a murder-mystery film, featuring the band members as characters and production staff. Due to it being a "making of" video, the crew and camera apparatus used within appear throughout. It was conceived and directed by film maker Steve Baron, and has at its core the interaction between a successful actress played by Susan Gayle walking out on 'Director' Philip Oakey. It is based on the theme of the Film A Star Is Born. Shot on a cold, wet, winter night it was shot on 35mm film instead of the cheaper video tape prevalent at the time. Susan Gayle states now, that Steve Baron was heavily influenced by the cinematography of the promo video for the Ultravox single Vienna and used it as a benchmark when shooting Dont You Want Me. Steve Baron was also inflenced by Francois Truffaud and the clapper board seen in the video bears the inscription "Le League Humaine" as a tribute. The video is credited for making Oakey, Gayle and Catherall universally known visual Icons of the early 1980s 2 It became controversial later for a Scene where Jo Callis appears to Shoot Joanne Catherall with a pistol from a car window. The Scene is edited out of the DVD version.

The video was released in November 1981, just as the music video culture was becoming a standard in music, which was a major contribution to the song's commercial success.

Notable Covers
* A cover of the song was the last successful single by Liverpool-based pop group The Farm. It was released in late 1991, having been produced by Mark Saunders, who also produced The Cure and Erasure.
* The song was also covered by rock band Texas live at Glastonbury in 1999.
* Swedish group Alcazar's album Casino contained a cover of Don't You Want Me, which also served as the Groups third single in 2002; Which had some success on mainland Europe.
*Indie rock band Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer recorded a cover version of the song for their "Duet All Night Long" split EP with Reel Big Fish.

Use in Commercials
The Human League as a matter of principle do not permit the use of their music in commercials. However Virgin Records own the rights to the material recorded when the Band were signed to them 1978-1990 and the lack of consent from the band has not been enough to prevent the use of rerecorded versions of this song in commercials.

*The first such use was a parody version by Fiat in a TV Commercial for their female friendly Punto car. Oakey, Gayle and Catherall fought bitterly to prevent the song's use but were ultimately overruled by Virgin. This is another Source of acrimony between the Band and the label who unceremoniously sacked them in 1991. Susan Gayle speaking in 2001 states now that the worst aspect of the whole affair is "now even if we wanted to use the song for a more worthy company, we can't because it will always be associated with cheap cars" 1 Philip Oakey is more resigned about the matter and stated that "You cant be too precious about a song you did 20 years ago" The Band receive no royalties if the song is re-recorded by a third party.

*In 2007 the song was used in a Super Bowl commercial for Cookie brand Chips Ahoy! The commercial featured four, clay-animated talking cookies driving in a red convertible who are each snatched up by a human hand while singing the song. Again the band did not give their consent for the use of the song but this time did not fight Virgin over its use.

Popularly called 'Genny' by her friends, Nnaji was born in 1979 to an engineer father and a mother who was a teacher. She attended Girls Secondary School Akwakuma, Owerri, Imo State. It was while in secondary school that she exhibited her artistic bent. Contrary to earlier protestations, she refused to forgo her fantasy of becoming a film star.

She has acted major roles in nearly 200 home videos. Her earnings from a home movie is reportedly in six digits. She lives in the posh Ajah district in Lagos. And she moves about in the latest sleek cars. She has become not just a star but, a super star.

Her status received the mega star title when in addition to acting she released a musical album. Titled Hot Stuff, the album was first released in Ghana before its subsequent release in Sierra Leone. Her first musical performance in Sierra Leone took place at Old School Entertainment Complex at Abereen, west of the capital Freetown, on May 6 and at the National Stadium Lagos on May 7. She appeared at the event alongside Mohamed Kallon, Sierra Leonean international striker. Kallon remarked that Genevieve's album is a delightful blend of Afro beat and western lyrics. At the initial launch of the album in Ghana, different groups jostled for hosting the show with some of them offering 12,000 dollars for it.

Her super stardom was consolidated recently. Unilever, the international conglomerate, recently appointed her as the new face of Lux, a toilet soap. Her appearance in the television advertisement confirmed her star status; she was the star any young girl would aspire to be. Apart from the television advertisements, she also featured in the billboards advertisements.

In order to actualise her dreams and not just fantasise about it, she left for Lagos. Initially, the roles were not forthcoming. But, she started with minor roles in Palace and Broad Street, two television soap operas. This opened the door for roles in Nollywood productions like Most Wanted, Agony, The Only Nigerian Girl, Camouflage, Fire Dancer, Mark of the Beast and so on. From her scintillating performance in these movies, her rating and popularity soared. She has been hailed as Nigerian Halle Berry and Africa's Janet Jackson.

Fans are already gearing up to witness her transition to Hollywood. Her innocent natural looks, petite figure and charisma in addition to her ability to let characters come to her easily brand her as Hollywood stuff! However, Nnaji is lukewarm about that. "Of course, it's not easy climbing up the ladder in Hollywood … Will I be able to cope with their professional standards? Will I be able to cope with the beauty rave and madness of Hollywood? Will I do my nose, do my chin, have breasts implant or enlarge my lips? Hmmm, questions that need answers!," she said. Completely assured of her abilities, she rather thought it is Hollywood that should be priming itself for her. She said, "the GOD I serve does not sleep... if He wills it, I will go to Hollywood and if He lets me get there, it's to make an African statement with my African-ness. The question should be "IS HOLLYWOOD READY FOR GENEVIEVE?"

Her characteristic bluntness on issues makes her unpopular with some people who mistake it for arrogance. But she takes such comments in her stride.

Rather, she takes solace in youngsters looking up to her. Her story gives many aspiring youngsters out there a chance to believe that they can also become what they want to become. It is no surprise she has got a lot of youngsters considering a career in the movies. She personifies everything they want to achieve in the movie business; she is beautiful, she is talented, she is famous and shooting upward every minute like the proverbial northern star. Everyone dreams of shinig like a star. The star today is Genevieve Nnaji.

She has appeared in over 100 to date, including "Above the Law" where she played a spoiled daughter of a president, and "The Chosen One," where she portrayed an ex-prostitute turned pastor. Ms. Nnaji has been dubbed "the Nigerian Sharon Stone," for her ability to transcend the roles she plays by sheer force of personality. Genevieve recently moved to Ghana for a modeling deal. But has however returned and made a movie titled "Girls Cot"
