An elevator pitch, elevator speech, or elevator statement is a short summary used to quickly and simply define a profess, product, service, organization, or event and its value proposition.

The name "elevator pitch" reflects the idea that it should be possible to deliver the summary in the time span of an elevator ride, or approximately thirty seconds to two minutes and is widely credited to Ilene Rosenzweig and Michael Caruso (while he was Editor for Vanity Fair) for its origin. The term itself comes from a scenario of an accidental meeting with someone important in the elevator. If the conversation inside the elevator in those few seconds is interesting and value adding, the conversation will either continue after the elevator ride, or end in exchange of business cards or a scheduled meeting.

A variety of people, including project managers, salespeople, evangelists, and policy-makers, commonly rehearse and use elevator pitches to get their points across quickly.

One idea behind an elevator pitch is to be able to actually not only say what you do but do it in a way that is interesting. For example if you asked someone what they do and they answer "I am a financial planner" the conversation may almost end there. As the person who hears what they do may already feel they know what it is that person does. So it is important to be able to explain what you do in more detail but without using terminology that will pigeon hole you before you get started.
James 'Jamie' Palumbo is the co-founder and Chairman of Ministry of Sound Group, the international music and nightclub business.[1]
He was born in London on June 6 1963, and educated at Eton College (1976-81) and Worcester College, Oxford (1981- 84).[2] He was listed in the Sunday Times Rich List 2011 in 467th place with an estimated fortune of £150 million.[3]

Ministry of Sound
After working in the City – Merrill Lynch (1984-86), Morgan Grenfell (1986-90),[4] Hambro Magan (1990-92) [5] - Palumbo opened the Ministry of Sound nightclub in South London in September 1991 with school friend Humphrey Waterhouse and DJ Justin Berkmann.[6]

The club, modelled on the legendary Paradise Garage in New York, was an immediate success as it had a 24 hour licence and rode the wave of dance music then popular in the UK.[7] However, Palumbo lost control of the club to drug dealers. A vicious fight to regain control followed.[8]

Since its inception Ministry of Sound has expanded into a number of areas including; music, live events, bars, consumer electronics, merchandise, beauty and other lifestyle products.[9] The business has also acquired a number of other brands including HedKandi, acquired in 2006 from the Guardian Media Group for an undisclosed sum.[10]

Ministry of Sound has offices or operates venues in Germany, Australia, USA, Egypt, Malaysia and Spain.
[11] Its touring operations comprise over 2,000 events per annum in over 30 countries.[12]

Ministry of Sound Recordings has sold over 50 million albums to date,[13] and is the largest independent music company in the world.[14] Its artists include; Example, Wretch 32, Eric Prydz, Fedde Le Grand and Yasmin.

Millions interact through Ministry of Sound’s digital channels including its websites and social networks Facebook and Twitter. Ministry of Sound is also the largest supplier of dance music through Apple’s global iTunes service. [15]

In 2001 Palumbo sold 16% of the business to 3i for £24 million.[16] In 2008 Lohan Presencer became Chief Executive, Palumbo remains Chairman of the Group.[17]

Legal Case
Palumbo was estranged at an early age from his father Lord Palumbo, the Conservative peer and former Chairman of the Arts Council.[18]
In 1994 he launched legal proceedings with his sister Annabella Adams claiming his father had mismanaged the family Trust, set up by his grandfather Rudolph, a successful property developer.[19] In 1997 his father stepped down as a Trustee and new Trustees were appointed to manage the family affairs.[20]
In 2010 new proceedings were launched relating to another family Trust, this time with Annabella Adams and his younger sister Laura Tikoo.[21] The outcome of these proceedings is pending.

Politics
Palumbo has a number of friends in politics. These include Lord Mandelson, the former Labour cabinet minister, to whom he loaned a chauffeur-driven car during the 1997 Election campaign,[22] Simon Hughes, the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, who he has supported since 1991[23] and Tom Sackville, the Conservative Home Office Minister with whom he worked on the Drugs Misuse Act 1994.[24]

Millions interact daily through Ministry of Sound’s digital channels including its websites and social networks Facebook and Twitter. Ministry of Sound is also the largest supplier of dance music through Apple’s global iTunes service.

In 2001 Palumbo sold 16% of the business to 3i for £24 million.[15] In 2008 Lohan Presencer became Chief Executive, Palumbo remains Chairman of the Group.[16]

Legal Case
Palumbo was estranged at an early age from his father Lord Palumbo, the Conservative peer and former Chairman of the Arts Council.[17]
In 1994 he launched legal proceedings with his sister Annabella Adams claiming his father had mismanaged the family Trust, set up by his grandfather Rudolph, a successful property developer.[18] In 1997 his father stepped down as a Trustee and new Trustees were appointed to manage the family affairs.[19]
In 2010 new proceedings were launched relating to another family Trust, this time with Annabella Adams and his younger sister Laura Tikoo.[20] The outcome of these proceedings is pending.

Politics
Palumbo has a number of friends in politics. These include Lord Mandelson, the former Labour cabinet minister, to whom he loaned a chauffeur-driven car during the 1997 Election campaign,[21] Simon Hughes, the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, who he has supported since 1991[22] and Tom Sackville, the Conservative Home Office Minister with whom he worked on the Drugs Misuse Act 1994.[23]

Writing
Palumbo’s debut novel, TOMAS, was published by Quartet in July 2009 to a furore of media attention and critical acclaim.[24] His vision of a crazed world destroyed by greed and corruption has established him as a formidable literary satirist.[25]

“Absolutely amazing” Stephen Fry

“I loved it” Claudia Winkleman

“Either mad or genius or both” Rory Bremner

“As grotesque as it is gripping” Niall Ferguson

His second novel, TANCREDI, will be published by Marlborough Press in September 2011.[26]

Personal
Palumbo has never married. He lives in London with his Thai friend of twenty five years, Rawipim Paijit.[27] He has one son, Alessandro, born in March 1991 to his Iranian mother Atoosa Hariri.[28]

James 'Jamie' Palumbo, born in 1963, is the eldest son of Peter Garth Palumbo (Lord Palumbo) and his first wife Denia Maud Elizabeth Palumbo (née Wigram). As the grandson of Italian immigrant and successful property developer Rudolf Palumbo, James had a privileged childhood and grew up at Buckhurst Park, Windsor, Berkshire, now the UK home of the King of Jordan.

Palumbo is best known as being the founder of the nightclub and brand, Ministry of Sound. Since its conception in 1991, the company has grown from a nightclub in London’s Elephant and Castle to a global multi-media business. Ministry of Sound is also the largest independent record company in the world.
Less known are Palumbo’s interests in property, in which he has been active since his late teens.

School
Between the age of six and twelve, Palumbo attended Scaitcliffe School in Surrey. On entering Eton College in 1976, Palumbo refused to conform to convention which made him unpopular. Responsible for the expulsion of a number of students for drugs, Palumbo was also involved in the abolition of the time-honoured tradition of fagging; the practice of younger students acting as servants to their older counterparts. At 16 he was named the youngest ever Captain of House under controversial circumstances which resulted in the early retirement of the house master.

Professional career
After leaving Eton in 1980, Palumbo spent a gap year in California where he established his first business with his school friend Humphrey Waterhouse - The Etonian Butler Service - providing domestic services to Hollywood celebrities. The business expanded and they were joined throughout the year by a group of school friends. This attracted the attention of the Immigration Services for working in the USA illegally and Palumbo engaged lawyer Randolph Fields to defend the group. A film treatment based on their experiences was sold to Tri-Star and then Paramount Pictures; in later years Palumbo was to work with Fields on the creation of British Atlantic Airways which became Virgin Atlantic.

Between 1981 and 1984 Palumbo studied History at Worcester College, Oxford, whilst working on a number of business interests. After graduating he spent two years at Merrill Lynch and four years at Morgan Grenfell. His principal client at the time was Kwek Leng Beng, Chairman of the Singapore based Hong Leong Group. Palumbo subsequently became director of Kwek’s European hotels business. In 1990 Palumbo was invited to become Managing Director of Morgan Grenfell Laurie; he chose instead to follow his mentor, George Magan, to work at Hambro Magan.

Just over a year later Palumbo went on to found Ministry of Sound with his school friend Humphrey Waterhouse and DJ Justin Berkmann. The club was an immediate success but Palumbo lost control of it to drug dealers. A vicious fight to regain control followed. Later, Ministry of Sound was cited for ‘best practise’ in the Parliamentary debate on the Drugs Misuse Act 1994.

Ministry of Sound is modelled on the New York City club Paradise Garage. In 2001 Palumbo sold 16% of the business to 3i for £24million. He remains the majority shareholder.

In addition to its portfolio of clubs, Ministry of Sound is the largest independent record company in the world, has a radio station, IPTV, hosts live events and produces a range of clothing and merchandise. In more recent years, Ministry of Sound has expanded and diversified it's business by purchasing some big music brands including Hed Kandi, Global Underground and Euphoria and has moved into audio/visual equipment production and beauty products.

Politics
Palumbo’s support of political figures such as Peter Mandelson (UK Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform), Simon Hughes (Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader) and Tom Sackville (Conservative Home Office Minister) has confused the media as to his party loyalty and whether or not he intends to enter politics himself.

Writing
Palumbo’s first novel, Tomas, was published in the summer of 2009 and reached number 54 in the Amazon top 100, there were several celebrity endorsements of this novel including the following:

“Absolutely amazing...it’s the most energetic, surreal and extraordinary novel I have read for a very long time.”
Stephen Fry

"In Tomas, Rabelais meets Tom Wolfe. Palumbo's surrealist satire of the Age of Eurotrash is as grotesque as it is gripping."
Niall Ferguson

“Either mad, genius or both!”
Rory Bremner

"A debut novel that explodes at full blast. Palumbo delivers a savage satire of the highest calibre"
Monocle Magazine

Personal life
Palumbo has never married; he has one son, Alessandro, who was born in 1991 to Atoosa Hariri. He lives in London with his best friend Miss Rawipim Paijit, from Thailand. He also has a passion for classical music.
